It seems to happen once in a while for me. I will take notice of a game, but then I can't help to realize how the fanbase is really rude to everyone who doesn't agree with them or they will have anti-social behavior of some sort and it just makes me not want to have anything to do with the game.
I really don't want to be calling people out, it's why I want to keep this general. I don't think all gamers fall into the group of specific fanbases anyways.
This blue eye perceives all things conjoined. The past, the future, and the present. Everything flows and all is connected. This eye is not merely seen reality. It is touching the truth. Open the eye of truth... There is nothing to fear.
I saw the title of the thread and the first thing I thought of was Undertale too.
I know that there are other ridiculous fanbases with Minecraft, Fortnite, or Cuphead, but I have never seen a fanbase more overbearingly crazy as Undertale.

Other then Fortnite, I never really skipped on a game based on the fanbase alone. Honestly, the community shouldn't matter for a game like Undertale (which I like), since there isn't an online part to it. I guess if the fanbase was toxic and the game had an online mode, I guess I would be turned off of it, but otherwise it's not a problem.
I don't think any fanbase has ever stopped me from buying a game, but a lot of Dark Souls fans make me want to vomit with their whole elitist mentality. Being good at a hard game doesn't make you any more of a gamer than someone who enjoys easier games.
@KirbyTheVampire True. I do hope that you have given those games a chance, you are defnitely right about how the community can beave sometimes and it's a shame sice I remember how it wasn't so popular and suddenly these "git gud" players appeared all over the place. Having said that, I really love these games, they aren' t realy that "hard" and more of "chalenging but fair diffculty" (at least most of the times) . It's definitely worth to ignore ther behaviour just to enjoy them, but I do have my settings adjusted so that only friends can message me.
@Talorusa I can't like your comment enough. Haha, that's pretty much what I said all the time about FE. It's shame, since I've really enjoyed the new entries, just as I enjoy the old ones. To be honest, I even enjoy the new games more and yeah... Conquest is my favourite. I'm a fan of the series since Binding Blade.
I don't know what it is about these new indie games that try to copy some old NES era games, but they always seem to attract some really toxic fanbases. Like, I can appreciate when a game is well made and all but you get all of these obsessive fans who try to act like they are the best things that exist and the second you might criticize something about them they get into this defensive mindset where they attack anyone with a contrary opinion. It just always winds up turning me off the games and writing off the fans as obsessive cult-like people.
It seems to happen a lot with the "hardcore" character action games and platformers in general. Especially if the game is Japanese and/or involving some well known figure in video games. You get all of these "git gud" types who attack everyone who might not enjoy the same type of games as they do.
@roy130390 I tried both Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne, and while I can see the appeal, I just get too frustrated to keep playing. I just don't have the patience for dying over and over until I finally succeed. Good games, though. I like the concept.
Fanbases in general put me off from playing games online, but it has never deterred me from purchasing a game. I recall turning SpotPass off in Miitopia because I recall spotting "real world" characters and celebrities when playing the demo for the first time, which immediately made the game feel cheap and nasty, like a meme-riddled internet forum. I think I would have been put off the game entirely if Miitopia was, say, online only, and if I had no choice but to recruit (or fight) Mii-fied Spongebob Squarepants and Michael Jackson.
I suppose online users deter me from playing MMORPG games, but not games that can be played offline.

Sounds like the comment section of the Nintendo of Australia facebook page.
@kirbythevampire As a fan of the souls series I too found them to be a huge turn off for me at first. I think I gave Darksouls 1 about three hours before I called it quits. Then I played DS 2 Scholar of the first sin on X1 and it ran at 60fps. I was hooked and realized as I progressed and it is a big progression game the game became easier. You start leveling your weapons and armors up and enemies once hard just began to melt in front of me. It’s true for the other games in the series too because I went on and beat those. To be honest I find a platformer like DK and Some Mario games harder and you die a lot in those too.
Not really? Remember this: fandoms have two sides to them. Just as there are toxic idiots out there, if you look in the right places mingling with like-minded yet still open-minded fans, that is extremely fun and I'm part of multiple groups like that.
Some are worse than others, like Undertale (which I like as an experience, but as a game and narrative I think it's very shallow). But that shouldn't deter you from looking for the bright spots.
