Topic: Has a fanbase ever turned you off from buying a game?

Not a fandom per se, but the so called "fighting game community", with all their nonesense, I think they are doing fighting games a disservice.

Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

I can't say it has, although I won't lie: I find The Witcher 3's fanatical online fanbase to be mildly irritating.

I'm sorry

@Octane Nah, you're cool. Some people seriously can't shut up about that game, though, and insist on comparing EVERYTHING to it.

Currently Playing: Yakuza Kiwami 2 (SD)

@Yosheel You are right on the part that not all the gamers fall into the place of the specific fanbase group.

Smite, League of Legends, Overwatch to a degree...but on consoles, at least, I haven't had an issue. As others have stated: why limit yourself just to be contrarian? A lot of people seem to look for excuses to make an @$$ of themselves, I wouldn't think too hard about it. That isn't to say it hasn't happened to me before, but each and every time I regretted that decision.

Goldeneye? Yeah, it's a pretty good FPS, especially considering its age. Other games from its era have aged far worse.

Final Fantasy VI? Overhyped, but still at least as good as the rest of the series. Still not my favorite, but just because some guys refused to acknowledge what came after it simply due to superficial aspects doesn't mean I should do the same...and lets face it, I'd be lying if I said the Final Fantasy series was full of games with well-tuned combat, balanced stats, and post-game content/extras that don't just exist to sell strategy guides. They're a fun spectacle, and FF6 fully embraced that notion.

Call of Duty - Has far worse problems than its fanbase. If anything, the fanbase is the best part about this decaying corpse of a series that was shot dead the moment it got out the door. At the very least, I can't think of any other reason why it's still selling.

I think you get the idea...I could've missed out on great games, as well as historically significant experiences, if I paid a bunch of clowns enough attention as to shy away from the games they're labeling themselves as fans of. And for the ones that aren't great, would a better fanbase make enough of a difference?

...okay maybe those games would probably improve drastically from genuinely constructive criticism, assuming whoever created it isn't just a shell of its former self, sucked dry of all creativity and vision by their parasitic publisher(s).

I think the next time you see someone hate a work of fiction exclusively because of its fans, you should see what notable series they like and look for the single worst thing involving its fanbase and shove it right into their faces.

Worthless hypocrites. Like, if it ACTUALLY directly effects you, and you can't avoid that, that's one thing. But letting idiots who have no connection to you that you can avoid affect your interest in an IP is just dumb. Especially for single player games. Every single thing you like that is remotely popular has at least one fan who has done a terrible thing. I'm certain about it. Get over it.

Also, a bunch of people I'm pretty sure here are Sonic fans so...yeah. Nuff said.

I don't have any issues with any fanbase in particular, mainly because I will try not to judge a whole community by a vocal minority (especially an annoying/stupid one).
Things that bother me on internet forums in general are mainly those things that can probably be considered typical annoying-fanbase-talk:

1. People thinking of their personal opinion as the only truth.
=> when it comes to which console is the best
=> which games are enjoyable and which ones aren't
=> especially a horrible thing when it comes to downrating games on amazon/metacritic/whatever just because they think a game should be rated worse, because obviously it is wrong that some people liked it and gave it a good rating

2. People that make gaming (also works for every other nerdy hobby, such as photography) way more of scientific tech-thing than it actually should be. This mainly is only a real issue combined with 1.
=> acting like resolution and framrates are a gamebreaking issue (which surely sometimes is true, but mostly is not)
=> being very nitpicky (from the viewpoint of an ordinary player) about very minor technical issues, which might be objectively correct, but can be very irritating for normal people and scare them off games they might have enjoyed quite a lot

3. People being overly frustrated because of their own expectations.
=> I really feel sorry for developers getting shitstormed for doing something different or lamer than people expected, since they usually did their best and often nothing actually bad.
=> things like this escalade way too fast online and discussions become way too heated

4. People treating gaming as if it was something completely serious.
=> like thinking games are bad if they look cute/childish and good if there's war in them and demons and stuff
=> like thinking only hard games are good games and everyone playing "casual" games or using easy modes is a loser
=> gaming and feeling totally adult and hardcore really doesn't go THAT well together; kids/teenagers always were the main focus; so there really is no need to laugh at a grown-up playing Mario/Animal Crossing/or behold: even Candy Crush - all games are equally fun and no game makes you more mature

5. People complaining about things being done when they are clearly not the target group.
=> when games are released that just not appeal to them though they appear to be well-made
(like Nintendo Labo or Spin-Offs targeting a different audience e.g.)
=> when features are added to games that they don't like even though they can simply be ignored (like easy modes or all the waifu-stuff in FE)

6. People being personally offended by business decisions regarding gaming.
=> it surely was sad that Wii U was not supported as much as other consoles might have been, but they did what they could and kept their company afloat
=> if there are not as many games available on console that seem interesting to someone then don't buy that console (yet); it surely isn't the companies fault that the games released don't appeal to everyone
=> ports to another console don't harm the people that had the original game at all, so why complain that others get the opportunity to play that game aswell? (this includes minor improvements, though I do understand when people are bothered when major additions are made to the new version; still it doesn't take anything away from the fun people originally already had with a game)

Most of the issues are related to general human behaviour like feeling/behaving as if you are the center of the universe and everything has to be optimised for you personally. I hate people being self-centered.
Especially related to first-world-complaints.

Never want to come down, never want to put my feet back down on the ground.

FORTNITE! Even though it's free. I can't go anywhere without hearing or seeing some type of reference to that game lol

@JayJ Yep it happens to me when fanboys justify every daft thing that the developer/company does especially if those things are not consumer-friendly. For example today I read someone saying that it's fine that a Switch port costs more than the original Wii U game back in the day. Those statements make me not want to support practices that I don't agree with and that some people encourage.

@kurt3s Yep Dark Souls is a bit like Monster Hunter, it can be brutally difficult if you come unprepared but if you invest time, upgrade armour and weapon and learn a few things about the monsters it becomes manageable.

I also think some 2D platformers are brutally difficult but I enjoy them except the indie masochistic ones.

@AxeltheBuizel I play online and I enjoy it but the problem with online gaming is that you almost always find stupid people that ruin the experience, no matter if you are playing Mario Kart or any MMO game. It's difficult to find decent people anywhere, sadly.

@JayJ "Fanbases" are toxic. Every. Single. One. At this point, NintendoLife is the only "fan site" I still frequent, and even though it is usually quite pleasant, there are still people who can be really toxic. But no fanbase has prevented me from buying a game. They just keep me from interacting with that game's fandom beyond a bare minimum. Nintendo and Pokemon I can usually handle. But Star Wars, Overwatch, RWBY, and anime fans (English speaking ones at least) in general, have all been hard to deal with. Certain segments of the Pokemon community are pretty hard to handle at times too.
