The gamer community continues to throw tantrums at even the thought of 'alternative' gamer conventions - look up the various reactions to 'gaymer' conventions; a bunch of manchildren spitting dummies people people want to play games the way they want to in the company they choose to.
To be fair some from the gay gamer community were uneasy at the prospect of a gay focused convention (although it had always been said that heterosexuals were more than welcome) when, by rights, the main conventions (E3, Eurocom, etc.) should be adapting to represent their sexuality more.
To me the issue had more to do with the idea that if someone felt an affinity to a group of people, and wanted to enjoy his/ her favourite hobby in the company of those people, then a bunch of morons were out there telling them they couldn't because they should 'just enjoy E3', then the point of a gaymer convention is incredibly important; we need these things to tell the morons that no, they don't have the right to tell other people how to have fun.
People have every right to set up interest groups and conventions if they want to for their own group of people. They do not need the permission of the middle class white straight people to do that.
