Oh god, I forgot about Kill Bill, putting those on my "rewatch" list.
I'm going to cheat a bit:
Action with Substance:
Mindless Action:Pretty Much Any Quentin Tarontino Film (except Jackie Brown, that one sucked. Obviously I'd choose Kill Bill Vol. 2 if I had to narrow it down to one, though it's still very close)
Action-Comedy:Red
Super Hero:X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past
Animated Action:Sword of the Stranger
Best action film I still need to watch from beginning to end: Sin City - I've seen parts, but I've yet to see it through to the end. Definitely need to set aside time to watch it someday...
EDIT: I'll get back to you on that top one. I had a movie in mind, then it escaped me while I was thinking of what categories to put down...
13 Assassins - Japanese film loosely based on historical events. Pretty much the Shogun's brother (or other close relative) was going to obtain a position of great power, but as it was likely that he would restart feudal warring for the "lulz" of it, a small group of the Shogun's Samurai band together with a plan to assassinate him (even though they realize they'll be branded as traitors, they believe their actions will protect the Shogun's legacy in the long run). The first half of the film or so is very methodological as they do a lot of planning, but once they get down to business it's nonstop action until the film ends.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
If you're counting martial arts movies I would have to say The Raid: Redemption. There has never been a better movie about getting to the top floor of an apartment building.
If you have a favorite 80s Action film list and you don't have Commando or Die Hard on there, something ain't right.
Oh and if i have to choose something: i like Captain America Winter Solider would be my favorite. Marvel films, while good have that problem of their antagonists often being wimps or not interesting. Winter Solider doesn't have that problem.
I love Paul Verhoeven action films, particularly Total Recall, Robocop and Starship Troopers. I like the way there's two levels to them where you can watch it as a basic action film or a second deeper level (e.g. in Total Recall if it is real or not).
Anyone who says Jackie Brown 'sucked' and refers to Tarantino films as 'mindless action' pretty much confirms they don't have a real understanding of film. Other than Kill Bill 1 (which is probably as close as his movies get), Tarantino hasn't made any films that could seriously be classified as 'action movies'.
For some REAL action movies, Commando, T2, Lone Wolf McQuade, Missing In Action 1-3, Invasion USA, Under Seige, Hard Target, Aliens, Predator, Cliffhanger, Death Wish 3, Rambo 4, Above The Law, Hard Boiled, etc.
Well, I don't have an understanding of film. And I honestly don't care. Films aren't a medium I regularly indulge in, I barely care enough to list the movies I have enjoyed. I only watch films for the fun of it, and with a few exceptions, which are so rare that I struggle to even remember them, I rarely take anything more from them than "well, that was enjoyable". Tarentino's films are fun from my perspective, though Jackie Brown was insufferable to me, if only because the type of movie it was meant to be a homage to are insufferable as a whole from what ones I've seen. Which I'll admit are only two, three if you count a (very unfunny) comedy meant to be a parody of blaxploitation films. So yeah, thanks for pointing out something of incredibly little significance. Maybe next time you could point out the typos in the New York Times.
Spider-man 2- This movie has some of the best staged action scenes I have ever seen.
Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith- The choreography in the fight scenes is nothing short of breathtaking
Django Unchained- Do I really need an explanation on this one?
Godzilla (2014)- The end fight scene is really enough to cement this movie in my top picks for action movies.
In the animation realm, Son of Batman probably has the best action I've seen in an animated film. The Incredibles is okay, but CG has a detrimental effect on hand-to-hand combat. Son of Batman has some really well done action. It's fast paced and brutal, but no more than it needs to be.
Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F
Godzilla (2014)- The end fight scene is really enough to cement this movie in my top picks for action movies.
Considering the fact that this movie was almost universally considered to be a huge bore with not enough action, I'd say you made a mistake and probably meant to post this in the 'Unpopular Opinions' thread.
Some of my picks might be borderline action movies, that's because I like films where the action is a result of how the story progresses.
The Running Man, Toatal Recall (the arnie one), Real Steel, Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer, Fighting
I am going to go see Mad Max tonight. I hope it is as insane as i keep on hearing it is. Furious 7 has the high bar of insane popcorn films that aren't Superhero films.
Speaking of Furious 7, that is a great mindless popcorn film. The stunts are insane.
