Ok so that's 3/4(+1 legendary) electric families native to Johto. Could be worse.

Like fire types in Diamond and Pearl.

This also reminds me that like 90% of all water types in gen 1 can't be obtained until the second half of the games (depending on how you play, maybe even the last third or fourth). When you'll probably have better things in your team.

Mareep is the only COOL electric type tho

Quoted for truth; Ampharos is awesome. That was my only negative about Crystal. I opted for Mehneton (misspelling intended) instead.

As a side note, am I the only one who hopped on the train between Goldenrod and Saffron quite often only because I liked the travel animation? XD

Wait, seriously? There's no electric types in Johto outside of the mareep line?

I dislike bringing up the stupid rat, but isn't the Pikachu line available in Johto?

@shaneoh only in veridian forest in kanto, if Im not mistaken

Yup it's only in route 2 (since viridian forest is just a collection of bushes here).

It's also one of the possible egg Pokemon in Crystal I believe. But it's either Elekid or Pichu, not both.

Eel

The egg can be any of the new "baby" forms of older pokemon.

No doubt it's their way to tell players "hey these are a thing!". Since you could go through all of gold and silver without even noticing them.

@Meowpheel Nah, that's definitely the Togepi egg. I believe it's mandatory to pick up.

Octane

Eel

Togepi is its own thing. It directs you towards the idea that eggs are a thing.

The other babies are on their own league as "new things that come out of old things".

Yeah, the one gen 1 baby pokemon you get in GS without breeding is hidden behind a waterfall, very very deep into a cave that you probably already forgot about.

@Tsurii With enough repels, the caves of Johto are pretty fun to explore. They're quite elaborate, and stacked with items.

Oh I have the habit of getting to the Lake of Rage and Olivine city before beating Morty, just to train. Which means I have to take the cave route.

Ecruteak city is when the game goes "choose your route" and then any sense of difficulty progression dies until you get to Claire, where it jumps back without warning. And then plummets again until the victory road and kanto.

I find the game gets harder the more pokemon you have with you.

90% of the trainers are a joke with underdeleved pokemon, and the strongest wild pokemon you'll find barely reach the mid 40's in the last area of the game. Mid 20's in the last area of Johto.

(and arranging battles with the pokewatch is a pain)

So leveling up a big varied team is harder.

I'm really excited about this, since gen 2 is my favorite... along with gen 1 (can never decide).
BUT
no online play? again? It's not common to find someone in my country to play with face to face, let alone in my town

I love BW2, playing with the harder difficulty option is fun if you can manage to get it on a new file, BW1 had this weird difficulty spike after the elite four though...

As much as I liked the "choose your path" dynamic in Gen I/II, you've pretty well highlighted the negatives to it as well. I would think that dynamic level scaling could more than be applied today...if choosing your path were more of an option.

(Note: Haven't played Sun/Moon yet, so for all I know the game allows you to make such choices...but probably not...)

Mt. Mortar could be a pain, but there was quite a payoff to exploring it. Not too many trainers, unfortunately.

It would've been a bit better, at least around Kanto, if only they could've kept the wild pokemon level progression consistent... At least you could use that to level grind a bit.

It just makes it too hard to level up a full team, really.

Alola is pretty linear.

Still don't understand why Crystal isn't being released with the other two. I thought that it might be because of the box legendary, but you could capture both legendaries in Gold/Silver without having the opposite game, right?

@Tyranexx Sun and Moon are very railroaded, and they do that incredibly grating thing of showing you an alternate route that you can't take for a very circumstantial reason. Haven't finished them yet either though. Honestly, I don't think we'll ever see regions with many alternate routes again.

My only guess for that would be that they don't want people to abuse the odd egg? Maybe it would make people ignore the other games...?

But really, the most likely option is that they don't want to put all the eggs in the same basket. Gotta save some trump cards for a rainy day.

Fair enough, I wasn't sure.

I would've gotten Crystal asap because nostalgia (first Pokémon game I've played from start to finish) and because I kinda wanted to abuse the hell out of the stupid high chance of a shiny baby from the Daycare. Talking about the egg you get as present when you go there for the first time.

14% chance is quite high. Hopefully we are able to trade to/from RBY as well, because that will mean an easy method of getting a shiny Ditto.
