Hey guys! I cant seem to find any info about how one would go about with the upgrading to a new3ds from a old 3ds WITHOUT system transferring (it must be possible?) My local Game has a deal so i get a fancy discount if i trade in my 3ds at the time of purchasing my new3ds but that makes a system transfer impossible. Cant i just remove my NNID from my old one and log-on to the new3ds (bringing my digital purchases with me?)

Nope. You have to use the system transfer. Ask your store if you can purchase it and then trade in the old 3DS for a "rebate" of sorts

When I upgraded to my XL, GAME let my keep my old 3DS for a day so I could transfer. Ask your local store to see if you can do this

I will update this when Half Life 3 arrives. [Started 17/11/2015]

@TingLz @Inkling how do i go about the actual system transfer? Do i login to my NNID on my New3DS or keep it a clean slate while being logged in on my old regular 3ds and initiating the transfer? confused

I don't know if all regions of Nintendo's websites are the same, but on the UK site there are detailed instructions for transfer and a general faq section.

Are you sure it's not possible? I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that you could transfer your data through your PC from SD to Micro SD card, put that into your new 3ds, and then just log into your Nintendo ID on the new console, without actually having to physically have the old 3ds there?

No. To TRANSFER (there's a clue there) your NNID and related data you need both consoles and an Internet connection. Nintendo does not want you to have the same account & downloads on two consoles so the user data is removed from the old console. If you do not follow the exact procedure, you risk losing everything so don't try to outsmart them. Just read up on the offical Nintendo website or give them a call if you are unsure.

They might let you perform the transfer there on the spot. Either they should have internet you could use, OR, it might be a NintendoZone in which case you may be able to utilize that signal?

If you can do the transfer on the spot, make sure you swapped your current sd card with a microsd version. Copy all content to the microsd card, then use an adapter in your current 3ds until the transfer. When you transfer you select using pc, then you can plug out the microsd card from your 3ds and put it in the new 3ds (remove the new microsd card) then you are ready.

Here in the states Gamestop makes you make the full purchase but after you take the system home and do the transfer you can bring it back for the refund. What they do is make it a return and give you the difference back.

I had the same problem. Ended up just sacrificing my old account with about 7 of the best (and probably obvious) eshop games on it. I'd completed them all though, figure I'll just redownload when they're on offer.
