Topic: Pilotwings and Wii Sports comparison essay. - Intelectual sidetrack, stand alone topic

Both are launch titles, both share VERY simlar design concepts and visual styles, and the intersting part is, the Wii game is percieved by Nintendo fans as shallow and cheap, the N64 game a repsected classic, maybe a little overshadowed, but loved. Definitly loved.

1. Both opted for simple, clean visuals - granted the N64 is not so clean or smooth, but let us handicap the hardware a little, common sense.

2. Neither wastes anytime with story of any kind, the are both 100% gameplay games. Both can be chipped away at in short session, I was knocking out tests in Pilotwings between innings of a baseball game, Wii Sports is very similar, you gain points toward (or away) for Pro in short gameplay session.

3. Both have 'extras' modes, fun little physics diversions, Wii Sports had training mode, and Pilotwings has ski diving, cannon, etc.

4. Both have simple, tight control.

5. They share interesting origional music that fits the emotion of the game. (2 favs, Golf theme, Hanglider theme)

6. Both are whymsical, bright, and fun.

7. They share simple, iconlastic level design, Pilotwings with targets to shoot and rings to fly through, Sports with the 10 chip shot/putt levels, barriers on the bowling alley to pick up spares, etc.

8. Both are simple to play but tough to master. Pilotwings challenges you to get 100% tests, Sports to go Pro and beyond.

9. Wii Sports has the common theme of sport, and has 5 distinct modes. Pilotwings has a common theme of flight, and has 3 distinct modes, plus the extra games.

So that is enough.

I think it is time for Nintendo fans to admit they had the wool pulled over their eyes by critical reaction to Wii Sports, and that tainted their gameplay experiences with said title. Admit it, the media grossly missed the mark with their grades of Sports, obviously they were prejudiced against it, and did not judge it to its own merits. Even (and I should say especially, an no I am not surprised that) Nintendo Power reviewed it HORRIBLY wondering if the MINIGAMES IN MONKET BALL WERE NOT SUPERIOR TO THIS GAME BECAUSE THEIR WERE MORE(!!!!) OF THEM! F-A-C-E-P-A-L-M-!

It is a classic, and I seriously wonder at the gaming skills of this (ussually) young board, who claim certain controls schemes in Sports are 'broken'. It makes me wonder if you put in any time with this game, or did you just 'profile' it and not give it a chance?

Easily the most underrated game of its generation.

Easily the greatest and most influential game of this generation

Quite possibly the greatest game of all time.

MOST DEFINTILY A NINTENDO GAME! Through and through.

Thoughts, reactions, discussions, plz. Does this essay hype you for Pilotwings Resort?

Well, it's not so much an essay so much as it is a laundry list of comparisons, but I do think you're right about critics severely missing the mark with the original Wii Sports, and I do think it's a Nintendo classic.

Now, "most underrated game of this generation?"
Not quite. It's up there, but Wii Music takes the cake. Critics didn't even understand what the game was. Heck, most still don't.

PilotWings will fare a bit better critically, I think, simply because it has the benefit of 3D visuals and a beloved Nintendo franchise name slapped on it. As of now, it's hard to say much more about it. Since none of us have played it (except perhaps Corbie and a few others who went to E3) we can't confirm if it has any depth to it, any replay value or...anything, really.

But for me, who's played hour upon hour of Island Flyover in WSR and loved every minute of it, Pilotwings is a perfect game for me.

Yeah, I was gonna say this doesn't look like an essay, but I'm a D English student, so I kept my mouth shut.

Anywho...I don't remember reviewers being so harsh on Wii Sports. I thought it was well recieved, and deservedly so. I'll have to look into that now. Wow.

Speaking of Wii Music- I heard bad things about it. I never believed most of it because I knew there was some depth to it if you find it. But at the end of the day, it's supposed to be FUN. Not SERIOUS. I did not get the game as at the time I was short on munnies considering I had other things to worry about but I would like to see a sequel. Maybe enhance things a bit but keep like the original- not what people wanted it to be because then Wii Music would not be original or it's own game. Then, because people love to complain about everything, we'll see nagging and crying: "Wii Music 2 is ripping off of Guitar Hero/Rock Band!!"

People said that about the original and I just could not understand why they would say that. Because clearly, Guitar Hero/Rock Band are majorly different from Wii Music- or vice versa. I remember seeing it at an E3 event video of the Wii in 2006 and was mildly excited in playing an instrument with a remote. Sure, it may not be accurate playing the piano, but as long as it's fun (which is what video games are supposed to be), then I'm sold. Can't say the same for the picky or the people who just did not dig Wii Music much though.

I sense 45% troll and 35% pretentious, but I can't define what the other 20% is. Could it be hope? There may just be a chance for the internet to be a virtuous place after all...
