I'm trying to decide between starting off with either the insect glaive or the long sword. Any suggestions? Any other weapons you guys would suggest I try?
i would suggest considering the morph axe as well , Epac98! I heared it got nifty new moves in MH4.
I always loved the morph axe in MH3, it all depends what playstyle your looking for. The morph axe is maybe not the stronged in a certain area, but its really flexible and can adapt well ( obviously it cant do ranged attacks ^^ )

Usually beginners either start off with the Sword and Shield, or sometimes the Great Sword. I'm pretty good with the Gunlance, though.
I would disagree with sanya. Sure sword and shield are considered "noob" weapons, but as long as MH4 is not the first time EVER videogame you touch i suggest you choose a weapon you like. It doesnt help if you really hate blocking and then start with the "noob" weapon sword and shield, which got blocking incorporated. I believe people learn faster with things they like. So just think which playstyle you like and go with that weapon from day 1. Believe me the weapons are complex enough that even when you play longer a weapon lets say 30 hours, you can always learn new moves , combos and encounters.
The longer you use a weapon the better you get with it and after time combos and such get second nature. So starting with a considered "noob" weapon even though you will never touch em again after beeing in the game for 5 hours is a waste of time. Thats ofc only my personal opinion, but why start with something which is awkward when you can use something which you like? And i dont say shield and sword is a bad weapon i just suggest that people should start with weapons they like than rather take "easy" weapons. Cause if other weapon types are really hard to use you cant start learning them early enough ! And keep in mind the first monster you hunt are easy anyway, they are balanced towards new players who need to get the hang out of the game.
For example take great jaggi from MH3 im pretty sure any player can kill them with any weapon type with no problem. But the training and getting used to is required for later harder fights!

I think the long sword is easier to master. It's got mobility and reach. The move set is pretty easy, also. The insect glaive has a bit more complexity to it, but you will find that you may use certain weapons for certain hunts. My first main was the Lance. A big reason for that was because of the underwater fights. Once I got comfortable with water, I went to Long Sword. Unless I want Uragaan's tail, I use a hammer on him. If you've played other iterations of the series, sorry for the info you already know. If this is your first hunt, then have fun.
@Stereoman Dude thank you for explaining that better than I ever could.
In MH3U I don't think I even tried the sword and Shield, I just jumped into the Heavy Bowgun and stuck with it until I got the WiiU, then I used the Great/longsword

I stumble across this image in the Internet showing MH4U looks better on the new 3ds compared to the old 3ds.
Can anyone confirm this? Or is this photo shopped
If you go back quite a few pages there is more pics showing the new 3ds has better textures so I believe this to be true but without someone that has both systems and 2 games it will be hard to verify.

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.
