There are several eshop games that i know would of got a higher recommendation if it allowed either online multiplayer or at least an online leaderboard. What is the excuse for this? Is it really that much cost to add an online leaderboard at minimum?

I guess this is an issue that needs to be taken up with the individual developers.
Although, Bomb Monkey is the only "score attack" type eShop game which is really lacking this, as far as I know.
Both pinball games have leaderboards. VectorRacing has leaderboards (I think). Pushmo & Pyramids offer QR level swapping (a tad bit of work, but online nonetheless).

Yeah I'm waiting for a pretty game to have some decent online features or at least some more DLC. I would still love Renegade Kid to add the extra levels from the PC version of Mutant Mudds to the eShop version and I'm hoping they manage to do that.

Don't forget that these are eShop games that run at most $12. You're not going to get that much. For the games that do have online features, be happy. For those that don't, don't take that as a knock against the game as a whole. Also, not a lot of the games on the eShop really need a vast amount of online features. When we start getting $5 Call of Dutys and $7 racing games that support the online in one way or another, then we can talk about this.
I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite
I don't know the difficulty of leaderboards overall, but Zen Studios (biggest name by far here)and Arc System Works were able to do it, and Enjoy Gaming has gotten QR Codes available.
I wish I knew the difficulty, because some publishers really could use online leaderboards in their games (99Bullets/Seconds, PLEASE MAKE A STEAM VERSION)

Screw you.
I don't think there is a lack of. Vectorracing is boring as heck in the singleplayer mode, but with the online leaderboards, it's one of the best third party games around. (NOT kidding). Same with Pinball.

I can't see it being difficult to add online leaderboard to your game. Even games that added extra features for us, like mighty switch force for an example should of added an online leaderboard.
