I think the 2DS is a much more comfortable system to hold in your hands. It feels like the GBA, PSP, and Vita in terms of comfort, and the larger L & R buttons are much easier to press. In many ways, it makes me think of a what a modern Game Boy would be like.
One thing to keep in mind, the 2DS has slightly longer battery life compared to the normal 3DS.
I would say unless a bigger screen matters to you, get a 2DS. My eyes could never register the 3D, and so few games use it anyway it's not a make or break feature of the system.
So, I say get a 2DS over a normal 3DS system, and over the XL if the screen size does not matter to you.
havent tried a 2DS yet but the shoulder buttons look really good. i hope the next nintendo handheld will have similair ones.
how can you say few games use 3D? show me 1 game that doesnt use 3D and i show you 10 that use it
I was just going to say something about that. It should read so few games don't use the 3d. Half of Pokemon doesn't and the other half is just about unplayable with it but outside of a few eshop games I can't think of too many that don't have it. Overclocked comes to mind but it at least has a bit of it.

I may have made a mistake with what I wrote that made my point get lost. There are 3DS games like Super Mario 3D Land, Kirby Triple Deluxe, and a few others that use the 3D effect and even make it part of the gameplay.
The issue is that the 3D despite being a selling point of the system, is not used as much as it should be. Major 3DS games like Fire Emblem: Awakening, Pokemon X/Y, Castlevania: Mirror of Fate, New Super Mario Bros 2 and other games don't even bother using the 3D effect, or if it is there, it's treated as an extra layer of eye candy and adds nothing to the game in question.
Let me put it this way, the 3D is not a game changer in the same way the D-Pad, Analog Sticks, the Touch Screen, or the Wiimote were for Nintendo in the past. It's treated as a secondary feature, that is becoming rarely used in newer games.
I could be wrong, hasn't 3D been ruled out of Smash Bros? Because if it has, it should tell you something about the feature's future.
I have a $30 coupon for Staples and I was wondering if the 2DS is good. It's $129.99 there but if I use the coupon, I'll get it for $99. I might give the 2DS to my brother.
Quick question, do you already have another 3DS model? Because of not, then there are tons of great games to check out on the 2DS.
I was really ticked about it not being in Pokemon and I'll be equally ticked about it not being in Smash to the point I might not get it. Since I use the 3d effect all the time 100% I now have a hard time viewing games in flat 2d to the point oddly enough I get a headache. My disappointment with Pokemon now has me not playing it anymore as well but not just because of the 3d.
I personally think 3d adds more then you think it doesn't. Without it Castlevania looks quite bland imo. They did a great job with it there.
I'll be highly disappointed as well if the next system handheld or not doesn't use 3d in some way. I constantly look at my gamepad wishing it was there. Yes it looks good but flat. Yes I've been spoiled!

well i love the 3D effect. playing games without it seems weird to me now. castlevania looks awesome in 3D. sure it doesnt add to the gameplay but it has 2D gameplay.
there are so many games that benefit from it. the experience in racing games with 3D is just way better! PES Become-A-Legend mode in 3D is great too. you really feel like your on the pitch.
most of the time 3D just makes games look more alive. like you watch through a mirror. i love it.
You bumped this while it was still on the first page and seem to be completely ignoring everyone in the thread to post random musings unrelated to your own topic...
So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.
Better bumper triggers, no hinge issues, tons of games. My first device for my ps3 to Nintendo earlier this year started with a 2ds. Tremendous console, you should get it.
-no 3d
-mono sound
-bulkier design
-apparently marketed towards children
If one or more of those factors is super important to you or your brother then you should probably get him other model.
If not, then the 2DS is the perfect portable gaming console.
In the end, if the console is for your brother (not you), shouldn't you ask him too? If it's some sort of secret gift, then he has no right to complain really, you're giving him a free 3DS.
