Topic: Getting a N3DS: What games should I get

Posts 1 to 20 of 22

Hey everyone! I haven't had a handheld since my Gameboy advance, for whatever reason the N3DS caught my attention and I decided to take the plunge.

So the question is; what games should I get first?

I was thinking one of the Pokemon (not sure which one); Majora's Mask and the Mario 3D land.

Any advice?

It really depends what you like, but you can't go wrong with a lot of the library.

For Pokemon, there's X and Y, or the remakes of Ruby and Sapphire of the GBA. Ocarina of Time 3D and Majora's Mask 3D are some of the best games out there, now updated and with 3D. Super Mario 3D Land is quite fun and perfectly suited for a handheld.

I would also recommend the following:
Kid Icarus: Uprising
Fire Emblem: Awakening
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
Kirby Triple Deluxe
Mario Kart 7
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call

We also have a 3DS Recommendations thread that you can use in the future.

  • Fire Emblem: Awakening
  • Pokemon X/Y/Alpha Ruby/Omega Sapphire
  • Kid Icarus: Uprising
In the future you'll want to pick up Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and Majora's Mask 3D. Majora's is a remake of a very good game, and Monster Hunter games have always been must plays. The learning curve for Monster Hunter is pretty steep, but once it has you, it'll be awhile before you see the sun again.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

The great games on the 3DS are:
Fire Emblem: Awakening- If you're interested in strategy then this game is a must.
Rune Factory 4- It's Harvest Moon crossed with dungeons and monsters. It's a great RPG. I've put about 75 hours into it, with signs of many more. There is a huge amout of dialouge in the game, and it has a full dating system with marriage too. It's innocent though.
If you're interested at in a Warriors game, or adventure/action with what I found to be a great story, get Samurai Warriors: Chronicles.
Kid Icarus: Uprising- The controls take little bit to get used to, but if you're interested in a adventure/(sort of)third-person shooter, with a hilarious story that doesn't take it too seriously then get this. The voice acting is pretty good too.
This last one isn't a great game, but it's a good one. Shinobi, if you're interested in a real challange, then this is a good game to get.

Appreciate the suggestions, I'll go for the Pokemon AROS, it seems more people lean towards that version.

Any opinion on the Bravely Default game?

I heard that the new Monster Hunter is a little better for new players though?

Thanks, it seems Kid Icarus and Fire Emblem is a must.

I'm getting a New 3ds as well, can't wait!
Here's my list:

  • Mario Kart 7
  • Pokemon: Omega Ruby
  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
  • New Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright
  • Super Smash Bros. for 3ds
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3D
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening
  • Kingdom Hearts DDD
  • Kid Icarus: Uprising
  • Star Fox 3D
  • Metal Gear Solid 3 3D
  • Paper Mario: Sticker Star

I'm a Danish gamer, but I mostly play on Nintendo hardware. I love gaming local co-op, and playing Mario Kart with my cousin (she's owning me btw!)
My favourite game franchises are Super Smash Bros. & Sly Cooper.

As far as I'm concerned, the absolute essentials are Fire Emblem and A Link Between Worlds.
Those are the 2 games that are almost entirely exclusive to the 3DS (others like Mario Kart 7 and Mario 3D Land are inferior versions of their Wii U counterparts). Then there's a lot of other awesome games

Warning on Kid Icarus. Whilst it claims to be able to make use of a second stick, this is (nearly) complete false advertising. You can only use the 2nd stick as a replacement for the 1st so that left handed people can have a symmetric button mapping.

Well in that case, you presumably missed out on best thing in the universe, the Ace Attorney series. And they literally just released the original 3 again on the eShop recently so you're in luck!

I've heard Bravely Default is good, but I haven't played it yet. Again, can't really say anything about the new Monster Hunter because I don't own it.

My list of must-own 3DS games:

  • Super Mario 3D Land
I don't enjoy straight-up platformers too much anymore, but this is the most fun I've had in a Mario game since Sunshine.
  • Zelda: Ocarina of Time
I honestly see no reason to go back to the original for the casual player. The vastly improved framerate makes the N64 version look like a slideshow. Coming with Master Quest is a big plus as well.
  • Steel Diver
Naww, I'm joking. Don't buy this, please.
    ...Unless you REALLY like submarines.
  • Monster Hunter 3/4 Ultimate
Quite honestly, talking about its good points makes it sound boring. The late-game is very grind-heavy, weapon combos stay the same for the entire game, controls seem obtuse and unintuitive , and every fight takes 10-30 minutes. My brother was big on the PSP versions, and I didn't understand.
    And then it clicked.
Suddenly, all those cons became pros. The fixed weapon moves forced me to get better at the game, as opposed to raising an arbitrary number attached to my character. The controls became second nature - so much so, that it felt as if having the controls any other way would have been insane. Those 30 minutes spent fighting one monster became 30 minutes of fighting multiples of the biggest, baddest creatures the game could throw at me - and succeeding while hanging on to dear life. I wanted to grind.
There's also not a lot of overlap as far as content goes between the two games, so 4U's release doesn't phase out 3U.
    ...yeah, I love these games.

Super Mario 3D Land? I thought it was universally agreed that that game is mediocre at best? I see OP has their eye on it but I find it hard to recommend.

In any case I would highly recommend 4U over 3U, since in that game they are taking steps to make it more accessible to newcomers.

As for some of my own suggestions, obviously, Super Smash Bros. Also Majora's Mask.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

So many great games for those just buying a system. My favourites are:

Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Pokemon X/Y
Super Smash Bros 3D
Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Having tried the demo, I'm also quite looking forward to Monster Hunter 4 coming out over here on 13th Feb alongside the n3ds!

Also, this list needs more Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. That game's just great.

Don't forget to grab an eShop card. While you're playing your new games you can pick up some smaller but equally great games at a potential discount to enjoy at a later date.

Three games really missing from this thread are Tomodachi Life, Mario & Luigi Dream Team and Kirby Triple Deluxe. Tomodachi Life is weird but might catch your interest, Mario & Luigi DT is a charming adventure and Kirby TD is my personal favorite Kirby game.

I'm on the same boat. I've been wanting to get a 3ds since last year but I managed to wait for the N3DS. My prospects are FE:Awakening, Luigi's Mansion, Shadow Dragon(DS), OoT, MM, M&L Dream Team, maybe 3D Land (though I might be disappointed since I have 3DWorld). I already have ACNL and ALBW for 8€ each and I got Smash too because of the promo. I'm not into Pokemon so it's good for my wallet. I'm not sure if I'll get Yoshi though or just wait for Wooly World. Same with Kirby.

Very traditional JRPG. Awesome battle system and class system. Beautiful art style and music. But sadly very average story and simplistic characters with an incredibly shallow fantasy world to explore (it looks epic but it's not). It's largely a static painting you can walk across from point A to B.
