@WaltzElf They'd have to build the games from the ground up rather than doing a direct port, but FFVII-FFIX are definitely feasible. Assets can be safely shrunk due to the smaller screen size, and the hardware power can certainly handle the equivalent of a PSX game. In fact, they could probably do some great graphical upgrades to the games. (Like no more blocky characters in the FFVII overworld!)

I read that 3DS cards are 2GB in size, meaning you could fit almost three 700MB CDs worth of data in there, or less than half a DVD.

I would imagine it would be possible to remake FFVII - IX, though I don't imagine X-XII would be possible.

But I'm not sure Square Enix would even want to, aside from perhaps VII. Remaking a PlayStation game would be a monumental task - much bigger than remaking a relatively limited SNES game, and would take almost the same production resources as making an entirely new game.

Of the potential remakes, I only really see VII selling in great enough quanities to justify the investment. I just don't see Square Enix doing that.

Yeah, neither. I was just saying it's possible, not probable.

I recall an interview with some S-E honcho saying that they wouldn't remake FFVII as long as it was playable on a current console. Darn you, PSN!

Well in the case of FFIX they presumably still have the majority of the assets because they're still using them! and they've updated a lot of them as well. Also the FFIX team isn't as high priority to SE so them remaking the game wouldn't take away from FFXV(unless my wishes have come true:P) and it'd probably outsell all their other work so it'd definitely be worth it!

I maintain that Square Enix has better things to do that dedicate the same level of resources it would take to produce a new game to remake an old one.

I would also be very disappointed with them. It's ok to remake FF1 or 2, because an intern by himself could almost do that. It's ok to farm out 3 and 4 for remakes to an up-and-coming developer like Matrix before entrusting them with a new game (4 bearers of light).

I'd rather SE dedicate the kind of resources it would take to rmake something of the scale of VII on XV instead.

It wouldn't take FFXV level resources to remake them on the 3DS though(and XV is likely to be crap unless they've changed teams).

...and I said IX, and as I said, they have updated FFIX assets and the team is already working on 3DS projects and a remake of IX would eclipse those projects in sales easily.

Objection! The evidence that Final Fantasy III, IV and the GB SaGa trilogy remade for the DS proves they don't have better things to do. They will likely carry on producing this series of remakes on the 3DS. I just hope we see the SaGa games here.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

Square Enix didn't remake 3 or 4, Matrix did, and given the quality of Matrix' original effort, 4 Warriors of Light, it would be a waste for Matrix to go back to remakes.

It shure would.

Matrix didn't do all the work, Tokita has been in charge of all the games Matrix has worked on and the actual design of the games is done by Square Enix people. Square Enix doesn't creative control to their outsourced people, it's the same with Chocobo Racing 3D, whilst h.a.n.d. is doing the coding it's Square Enix folk calling the shots.

To give an example of Matrix's solo work, Avalon Code and Nostalgia are both regarded as meh and nowhere near the quality of the remakes.
