I enjoyed Double Dash when I was younger, but honestly the older the game has gotten the less I've enjoyed it. Something about the controls stopped clicking with me eventually, probably a result of getting so used to how the more modern Mario Kart games feel... DD just feels kind of slippery by comparison. Even my friends don't like it, so I can't really give the game a chance under its ideal local multiplayer circumstances, either. Oh well! Truth be told far as Gamecube racers go I'd really rather Play F-zero GX or Kirby's Air Ride anyway.
It's still at the very least going to have seamless battles like Legends does. I mean... you can tell that just by looking at the battle screenshots, which just take place on the overworld, pretty clearly. Hard to say about catching stuff by just throwing Pokeballs, though. This game will likely not be focused entirely around filling out the Pokedex, however, so there would already inherently be less incentive to just catch a couple of dozen of every Pokemon in the first place. I think it's probably a good idea to just wait and see exactly what they're planning.
@MostHandsieBoy "There won't be any poke transfers or any of that." We know that Legends is going to have Pokemon Home compatibility, and we know that Pokemon from Legends will be transferable into BDSP (from datamines) and Scarlet/Violet (from official confirmation). I presume that transfers into Legends will probably be possible as well, as the game displays Origin Marks.
I'm super excited about this one. I love Pac-Mania, Pac-Man Arrangement, Pac-Man CE... and Pac-Attack, too! I've been dying to have those on the Switch, so I'll happily be picking this up.
I really wonder what exactly is the deal with streaming platforms taking so long to arrive on Switch. I assume there's some underlying reason, because I really doubt Netflix would be taking their sweet time putting their app on a system that's sold as many units as the Switch has. But I really can't picture what exactly could be going on there.
Though I've been playing games my entire life, the 3DS was the era in which I started really paying very active attention to everything that was happening around a single system, started watching E3, keeping up with Nintendo, etc... So I have very strong nostalgia for the 3DS in particular. I'm lucky in that I already have the majority of the titles that one would consider "worth" having for that system, plenty of the DLC, a load of the more niche stuff, too... So in reality, this change will not really effect me until my 3DS finally gives up the ghost, and even then I'm sure we'll be able to redownload titles already associated with our accounts long into the future. Nonetheless, this still makes me feel incredibly melancholy. It wasn't Nintendo's strongest era, but my time with the 3DS is right up there with the Gamecube in terms of my own personal favorites. Now I'll have to rely on Nintendaan's old 3DS coverage to get that nostalgia hit I crave...
That aside, I'm also a huge Pokemon fan. Bank becoming free eventually is great, but farther in the future, when online for these systems shuts down entirely, I'm going to be immensely disheartened to know that Pokemon from the first five generations will be trapped in games from before the era of Pokemon Home. I really, really hate that, truly. Ugh.
I want to buy this game physical, but it has a "Digital Deluxe" version that comes with the soundtrack for both games and that sounds extremely appealing. I hope that there is some option for physical buyers to get the same content that comes with the Digital Deluxe version.
The fact that this is even a discussion is just weird to me. Are there really people out there that think "Oh this game is British, I can't play it" outside of people who are just memeing really hard? I can understand if you have gripes with the quality of the voice acting itself, that's a totally different topic, but the idea of a game having a British voice cast being a total turnoff for somebody is something I genuinely cannot wrap my head around.
This year had a lot of niche or "B-list" Nintendo releases. New Pokemon Snap, Miitopia, Warioware, Famicom Detective Club, and Metroid of course. Not exactly 2017 in terms of the BIGGEST names, but as someone who's keen to play practically all the stuff Ninty usually publishes, I had a great time! I particularly enjoyed Warioware. Though it's a bit lacking in some areas, it was overall probably one of my favorites in the series. At this point, Nintendo is genuinely running out of unrepresented series on the Switch. What a nice, big, fat library it's got.
I know it (rightfully) drew plenty of criticism, but I really enjoyed the Mario festivities earlier in the year. I went and beat Mario 1, Lost Levels, 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, 3D World, and of course Bowser's Fury and I really enjoyed myself.
Also also it doesn't really count as a "new release", but ACNH 2.0 is my GOTY anyway, screw it. I instantly poured like eight trillion more hours into Animal Crossing once that update came out. I love it, seriously. That was enough to make the year fantastic in my own personal, heavily biased and AC-loving book.
Next year I would like Part-Time UFO 2. Please and thank you.
It's entirely dependent on the game for me. For example, if I can beat a dead horse for a second, Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces are both similarly "short" in length. However, Sonic Mania is an incredibly fulfilling game to play, whereas in Sonic Forces every level has me thinking "That was it?" And before you know it, it's over. It all depends on the quality of the content itself, at least in my opinion. Sonic Mania doesn't feel short, whereas Sonic Forces totally does. A game can be whatever length it wants as long as it's great.
My big question, and something I don't see very many people bringing up... Will this continue to include future DLC for Nintendo's current titles? Or will it just, rather randomly in my opinion, include only this Animal Crossing DLC among an assortment of retro systems? Because in the future, let's say they add things like BOTW2's inevitable expansion pass, or Pokemon Legends: Arceus DLC. With a future like that in mind, I think $50 a year begins to seem a lot less crazy. For somebody like me that purchases most of Nintendo's games already that has the potential to save me a decent chunk of change on top of letting me play N64 games online with my buddies.
However, Nintendo didn't clearly state that as their intention, so it remains to be seen. Though I do think it's at least somewhat likely!
It is a shame to hear about Monkey Target in particular, but as far as the main game is concerned I'm reasonably confident that it'll still be great. Folks are already hard at work recreating some of the crazy things you could do in the originals! https://twitter.com/DeddoRain/status/1443201682956066820
As long as that aspect remains intact I'm good to go, personally.
This is awesome. I really do hope that Metroid Dread winds up being a big success for the series and it decides to stick around as more of a consistent Nintendo mainstay. I know the announcement finally convinced me to play Super Metroid, and Fusion! First time I've got some use out of that 3DS Ambassador Program in a few years. I see why everybody loves these games so much!
Sonic Labyrinth being at the very bottom of lists like these always amuses me. The game can be beaten in under an hour and is honestly relatively competent as a little, quick-fire Game Gear puzzle game. But, because it conceptually goes SO far against what Sonic usually does (slow down shoes?! What in the world...) everybody turbo hates it. And frankly, I can't blame anybody for that... but I do think games like Rise of Lyric (that are a thousand hours long, boring AND ludicrously buggy) probably deserve to be placed lower, if you ask me.
The fact that Sonic 3 & Knuckles isn't counted as its own thing on this list makes it really hard for me to rate S&K and S3 on their own. I haven't even considered playing those two separately in a thousand years! Who does that?! Either way, Mania's my personal favorite. Woke up at 3am on release day unable to sleep because I was too pumped for it, gave up sleeping and just started playing it instead. Such a pretty game and the devs seemed to know exactly what I was looking for in a 2D Sonic game.
...Also, Tails Skypatrol was released on a Nintendo system, as a bonus game in Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut back on the Gamecube!
I'll just second what half the comment section here is saying and agree that 2017 was a crazy year for video games. Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Breath of the Wild and Sonic Mania are all in my top 5, with Sonic Mania in particular being in my top 1. lol.
I don't know what kind of stars aligned in 2017 for the whole industry to just be non-stop pumping out massive bangers, but I look forward to whatever year in the future even comes close.
@jcboyer515 I normally agree with this sentiment, but in this instance I don't really blame them. A Hornet mode was one of the original game's Kickstarter goals, and it ballooned into Silksong. If they'd gone this long quietly developing Silksong without updating anybody on what happened to that stretch goal then that would be an even worse situation.
Sure, I guess they could've just said "We've decided to turn Hornet mode into a full fledged game!" as an update, without showing us anything, but that's not really any better, and we'd still be in the same position of waiting for an announced game to be discussed further.
