I have to go with TotK. It's really no contest & I'll tell you why.
1. BotW had underwhelming, generic bosses. 2. It didn't feel as "lived in" as TotK. 3. TotK also had a more satisfying final fight & "true" ending. 4. TotK had much tighter gameplay; Building took everything to a whole new level. 5. Zelda's story in TotK was masterfully crafted. It WAS her story this time around.
Real talk here. People talk about how revolutionary BotW was. It wasn't. Much in the same way that Deus Ex Human Revolution was compared to the original 2000 Deus Ex game, BotW was just an evolutionary advancement of OoT - adding in scope, physics, & limited crafting to an already polished design. It didn't fix much of what OoT did wrong.
TotK not only closed up BotW's holes, but it added brand new skills that actually change how you solved problems. Much more non-linear & personalized. It also expanded the scope vertically, making it even MORE non-linear.
I put in ~170h into BotW & another 280+ into TotK. Honestly? There's still stuff that I can accomplish or new ways for me to have fun in TotK. I think that I've largely burnt through BotW, however. TotK is much more of a sandbox, yet also somehow more narratively compelling.
Nintendo is going to have a hard time following up TotK. Much like how the OoT or LttP successors often got criticized simply because they were different or just fell 0.1% off of perfection.
I feel that this article is somehow mistitled. Most of these game exist on Switch, but aren't actually Switch games. If they limited it to that then this list would be MUCH smaller.
I get it. Funko baaaad!!! Still, I'll be the lone dissenting voice.
This game, for what it is, looks better than it has any right to. It just does. Maybe it is an edgy LEGO Dimensions. Whatever. Unpopular or not, I'll get it.
Honestly? I've played some games lately that were popular, yet too janky to enjoy fully. (I'm talking to you Helldivers 2.)
This game looks silly and, given the vast number of games taking themselves so seriously lately, that's good enough for me. Run without crashing every 10 minutes and we're good.
