After reading the review I got the impression the score was going to be lower...
While I'm glad we're starting to see some boardgames ported to the wii, what's the point if they can't be played online? If everyone that's going to play is here with me, then we'll play the real boardgame instead...
At other sites they're saying the deal is for Europe and other PAL regions. On the US all the versions will be released on schedule. BTW, they're also not talking about a delay, and hint at the uncertainty of the game being released for the other platforms in Europe at all...
Well, looking back I see reviews were quite mixed for that game, it certainly doesn't rank with the best of the system at all... It's still a bad Zelda clone with boring repetitive gameplay to me... (and I did play it to the end).... The review from Eurogamer (6/10) is pretty much spot on: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/r_starfoxadventures_gc
That issue aside, I think the Wii is at a point similar to where the DS was a couple of years ago, with many ported games from inferior systems with tacked on motion/touch screen controls and lots of simpler games like Nintendogs and Brian Training. But look at the DS now... It seems once the developers start to get the special features and potential of the machine, excellent games start to crop. The DS right now has loads of interesting games in all categories. It took the DS quite a while to reach this, so I'm not really worried about the Wii right now. Not with what's coming.
Well, I for one, don't think Nintendo really needs another Rare... the games I've played from them were not that good... Starfox adventures was pretty bad and the Donkey Kong game for the N64 was so boring too... The DK games fro the SNES were pretty bad too... nothing like SMB at all... They might have made some good games (haven't played Goldeneye) but I think they're one of the most overrated companies around...
Anyway, I don't think Nintendo has neglected anyone, they have just broaden the style of games they make... Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros, Metroid Prime and Zelda are good examples of this. Third party suppor seems fine too with games like those already mentioned (Madworld, No More Heroes, the upcoming Sin&Punishment, Mega Man 9, etc...)
Nintendo knows the difference between console gaming and pc gaming (something MS and Sony seem to have forgotten) and as a result, I'm not really interested in most of the "hardcore" releases for xbox360 or PS3. And after playing a good FPS on the wii with the wiimote, I don't won't play one of those games with a traditional gamepad (or even mouse). No matter what the graphical quality is, the fact you're actually aiming and shooting yourself can't be beat...
One possible problem if it ever gets released in Europe is the online content. The original Picross DS had lots of online puzzle packs, but over here there are only two.... I'm sure the Japanese Rittai Picross will have loads of online puzzles to download, but most of them won't be available when/if the game is released here...
So I think I'll import... (Edit: Hell... I'm even thinking about getting rid of my European Picross DS copy and get a Japanese one too...)
But just because it is sarcasm, doesn't automatically make it clever or funny... Yes, it's sarcasm, but not particularly good sarcasm...
BTW, I don't think they care much about the people that might get offended because I figure they don't consider vegetarians to be part of their potential user base...
Great list. Some of those were favorites of mine too, and some I haven't played, but will have to eventually (let's hope the VC for DSi comes soon )
Super Mario Land 2 was actually the first GB title I got into when a friend lent us his GB for a couple of weeks on summer holidays (it had only that game in it). We finished it but still played on. It's one of the most enjoyable Mario 2d titles around... This was years before I decided to actually buy one...
Links Awakening DX was one of the first games I played when I bought my first GBC and I still think it's the best GB/GBC title ever, and one of the best Zeldas ever (I still have a soft spot for the 2d Zelda titles, especially from the SNES game onwards).
There are some games I really enjoy that aren't on that list. The GB Picross games were great, and as always with that series, the puzzles were very good. I especially liked the ones where a big picture would be formed by solving 4 puzzles. The Warioland title I enjoyed the most was Warioland II, but that was only for GBC, wasn't it? Another favorite back then was Mario Golf, with its RPG-like gameplay...
"Right quakster, I get it. I just wish it were possible for most vegetarians to just shut the hell up about it when they're tempted to ridicule omnivores for their choice of diet"
Many times when I tell someone that I'm a vegetarian, they start rambling on and on about how bad and unhealthy it is, asking questions like how and why would anyone stop eating meat/fish and trying to get me to justify my choices (which I don't anymore). So I guess you find these kind of people in both camps (vegetarian / non-vegetarian).
Also, most people keep on asking things like: "But you do eat ham, don't you?", "But you do eat fish, don't you?" and "Oh, this dish doesn't have meat in it" only to then find it has either tuna or chicken sprinkled over it...
About the add... I find it more stupid than offensive, and not very clever or funny...
Thanks for this review I love Picross and now will have to get this, but I may wait, although I'm not sure it'll be released here... Did Picross DS manage to sell enough for a sequel to be published?
Mystery Dungeon titles are great. The japanese seem to love roguelike games (which are where these come from) and to me it's just fine I've been playing Rogue and Nethack since the mid 80's and I'm happy that those kinds of games are still alive
@warioswoods Yep... but I wouldn't call it "waiting" because I didn't even learn about the game until I got the GBC... At that point my experience relating to console gaming was pretty much zero Until I got the GBC, all my gaming had been computer based (ZX Spectrum, Amiga 500, then PC and Mac). In fact, at that time I wasn't even interested at all in console gaming and only bought the GBC because of its portability and a bit later the N64 because of Zelda Ocarina of Time... Of course, after that I learned to appreciate the differences between computer and console gaming, which now only Nintendo seems to remember anymore....
I'm much older than the GB (I'm more from the ZX Spectrum generation ). I remember when the GB was released, I hated it It wasn't until I saw the smaller GBC and Zelda Links awakening that I started loving the system
There is potential for great storytelling and writing, but it's almost never reached. Talking about actual literature, I'd say the games that come the closest are the old Infocom text adventures and some newer Interactive-fiction, which is all about the writing, and there's some quality stuff out there...
I agree with Kid_A. The whole hardcore gaming = violence/mature themes is pretty stupid. I think those supposedly "mature" games appeal more to teenagers than adults anyway... I don't mind violence, but what I want is good gameplay and a challenge.
Just give Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros Brawl or Metroid Prime 3 to a "casual" gamer and see how far they get...
"One thing the Wii has in its favour with regards to FPS'ers is the IR, which gives a far more realistic feel of shooting a gun than you can get with analog sticks. Sadly, a lot of hardcore gamers have grown up using conventional control pads and therefore have not embraced the Wiimote for this purpose."
This is very sad... After playing Metroid Prime on the Wii, I just can't see how anyone would want to play a FPS with any other type of controls...
This is the first GTA title I've owned, and I wasn't interested until I saw that it's more similar to the early ones (which I tried on PC ages ago). Anyway, I appreciate games with open ended worlds where you can roam and do what you want, advancing at your leisure, and not many of those types are released now. The "theme" is not one I really enjoy, but it's ok until someone releases a game like Elite or Frontier on the DS/Wii
Why won't Nintendo release a true DS sequel to the G&W Gallery games for the GB and GBA? I've been waiting for it since the release of the DS... Each of those had tons of games in classic and modernized versions, but playing the dual screen games on the GBA was a pain.... That wouldn't be a problem with the DS... C'mon!!!!
I agree with Gauntlet and Asteroids. Also other "vector" games would rock too.
I'd also want to see Moon Cresta, I used to play that a lot on the arcades and on the Spectrum. Incidentally, I only remember the Karnov game from the Spectrum days, it wasn't bad...
The Arcade version of Golden Axe would also be great...
And the light gun games, actually using the wii remote to shoot would also be excellent, I wonder how difficult it'd be to actually modify them...
Heh, I played this one a lot as a kid on one of those early B/W PCs Great memories, although I'm not sure how it'll hold up today... Yeah, the figure skating is the weakest event, but I remember enjoying the biathlon and bobsleigh ones a lot.
Hopefully they'll release Chamonix Challenge / Final Assault eventually. It was my favorite sport game at that time and I still consider it a very good game.
I can see why they won't support the d-pad, pong/arkanoid like games always suck without analog controls... They could support the classic/nunchuck controllers though... but I think the game will work well with motion controls...
Glad to hear the game will be released over here... wish other publishers would do so too...
I think this is the Wonder Boy I played on the Amiga back in the early 90s. Is it possible? From what I've seen in the video it does seem to be it but my memory is a bit fuzzy...
Will probably get it anyway as I've enjoyed the other Wonder Boy games on VC
Loved the interview. It's great hearing from people involved in the game industry back then. I had a ZX Spectrum in the 80s, but a friend did have a C64. Anyway, many games were released on both platforms and later I got an Amiga, so I'm really enjoying the games on the VC...
It's nice they're showing interesting content on Nintendo's Channel... I erased it a while ago because I'd rather have some games instead, maybe when they solve the storage issue I'll put it back
"Either way, with Jungle Speed coming to WiiWare, this opens up the genre of Board Games much more to developers. we already know UNO is coming but what else could we see..? I can't help but feel that Monopoly should have been WiiWare but anyways... I'd love to play board games online as maka stated, which is why I'm hoping GameLoft actually bothers to add Online Play to their iteration of UNO."
I'm not a fan of Monopoly... Yeah, it sells a lot, but there are many better games. You can already play Settlers of Catan and Lost Cities on X-Box. While I'm not such a fan of so called "Eurogames", these are two excellent games that would fit perfect with the wii controls. I hope we can start seeing those games on wiiware...
@KnucklesSonic8 Try here: http://www.boardgames.ca @AnakinOU: I got the same treatment on a recent thread about Jungle Speed here... don't worry. Some people are just paranoid...
I agree though this game might be just better as a physical card game, unless it could be played online. Wiiware would be perfect for online boardgames, much better than the x-box which is getting all of them...
At first I thought it was online. To play at home I already have the original card version... I can't see how console versions of boardgames will succeed on the wii without online play. After all, if you're just playing with people around you, why not just play the real game??? It's not like it takes very long to set up and play anyway...
I'm not sure what you mean, but you can read about that game at http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/8098 where I'm also an active user (same avatar and name). Maybe you'll also discover a wealth of good boardgames. A bit of time away from the computer might do you good too
Jungle Speed is a very fun and fast paced card game (real card game with physical componets). The biggest the group, the more fun it is. Kids love it, but it's not just for kids. You've really got to pay lots of attention to the cards played as you may have to react anytime. I'm not sure how will it translate to the Wii, but I'm glad we're starting to see interesting card/board games on WiiWare too... There are tons of good board/card games that would play wonderfully on the Wii (and no, I don't mean Monopoly and Risk...)
I'm a bit stuck right now in one of the bosses but I really like the game. Recently I've used Darwiinremote to play the game using the wiimote and that really adds to the game
BTW, about Mega Man 9: I recently got MM2 to get a taste of the series (with it being the easiest) and to my surprise I managed to finish it (I'm not a hc arcade gamer), so I went ahead and got MM9. It is considerable harder, but also the fact you can buy energy tanks at will will make getting through the game possible. Now, that said, I know I'm not getting that "Mr. Perfect" achievement
It's kind of strange that Platchen hasn't even entered the top 20 in the USA at 1000 points while in Europe (I'm not sure if the popular list is for the whole Europe or each country has its own) went up from 13 to 11 in the last few days at 1500 points.
Still, the game and the people that worked on it don't deserve to be laughed at (a pretty childish attitude btw) as the game, at least around here in Europe, is having moderate success even with its problems and bugs which hopefully they'll eventually fix.
Well, I agree the price cut is quite unfair for European gamers that bought it at full price. The fair thing to do would be to cut the price here too and give us back those 500 points, but it's not going to happen
MM9 seems very nice, but I don't think it's a game for me... unless it had a way to save your progress... In that way, Patchen (with all its confusing gameplay) seems to be the easier game of the two... Still, I'll probably get MM2 on VC before I commit to getting MM9 and see how I enjoy it.
"@"(where I can at least feel I'm advancing each time I play)" Well.. To be honest, Playing Plattchen (or many different puzzlers at that), you barely ever feel like you are advancing anyway >_> I don't see the difference.. other than megaman actually has levels and bosses.. and puzzlers have.. well.. "Levels" and just trying to get higher scores."
What I meant is that in a game like Platchen or other puzzlers with levels (like picross) I can complete them at my leisure and each time I play, advance a little (or a lot). In a ultra-hard arcade like MM, each time I play I will be confronted with the same level one (and luckily level 2) each and every time I play, never seeing more than that (unless I decide to dedicate a huge amount of time to get good at the game). At least in other arcade games, there are save points...
Anyway, it seems to me MegaMan9 and Plattchen are directed a different types of gamers. HC gamers will get MegaMan, but casual gamers won't enjoy a game when they won't be able to even beat the first level... (As confusing as Platchen's gameplay may seem, it is not that hard to play)
I love arcade games, but I'd rather play for example Super Metroid (where I can at least feel I'm advancing each time I play) than a ultra-hard MegaMan game where I will never see more than 5% of the game... (I'll probably get it anyway when it comes out in Europe, although I know it's going to be very frustrating...)
@Gitaroo_Dude: You wish! I said all I had to say on this subject. There's no point in continuing. I have absolutely nothing to do with BPlus and I'm not leaving this site anytime soon. Cheers
@Drake: Thanks for taking the time to correct the facts.
@Objection_Blaster: I did understand, but maybe I wasn't clear on my reply. Sorry.
To the rest, I'll just say that I'm not trying to convince anyone that the game is the next best thing since sliced bread (it certainly isn't). Just trying to state the facts, that's all. Thankfully, Drake has listened and corrected the review. I appreciate it (seriously) even if we disagree on the game's worth value.
I'll read Eurogamer's review, but from the quoted statement and score, it already seems more fair than this one...
@x.SuperMario.x: That's what I'll probably do. This site is great for news, but to expect a good review of a game that takes more than 1h appreciate was very naive on my part...
@Objection_Blaster: The review bashed itself? You mean bashed the game? Well, you have to be careful when writing a negative review, especially about the facts you state about the game. If the facts are wrong and give a misleading impression of the game, you're misleading your readers. For example, the statement I quoted above: ""Each panel that explodes costs you one point in addition to gaining you a point, thereby cancelling out the benefit." is very misleading and were it true, it would change the game significantly as to practically make it unplayable. The problem is not the negativity, but it combined with the wrong facts.
@Doogle: At least you're only bored of one poster. I have to put with you all but seriously. Just as I don't have to read the reviews, you don't have to read my comments. Don't like them? Just ignore them.
@calculon: "As empty vessels make the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers." From Plato. So you're basically saying I have no wit and am a babbler. Yeah, resorting to insults is a typical last resort behavior... Thanks for confirming the norm.
At the end of the day some like the game, some not. But many (about 90% in this thread) haven't even played it. That is, I think, a more accurate statement. And if you don't like my posts, see above.
BTW, I find it very funny that even after I pointed out the mistakes in the review, they're still there... At least change the part about the scoring...
I don't say the game is for everyone. I do like it, others may or may no. What I don't get is... I can play this game for hours and feel I'm advancing, unlike in games like MegaMan or most shooters where the difficulty level goes through the roof. Still those games are classics but this game just has "too many things going on".
Again. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but when you write a review, especially for a site like this, the least you have to do is to get the facts right and have the decency to play the game enough to be able to inform objectively. This review fails in both regards. Bash the game for what it does wrong, not for what you don't understand about it. It's not that hard to understand if you bother reading the manual and playing for a while. That's the least you should do when reviewing a game.
@Mickeymac: C'mon, the fact that you can't win just by playing randomly is exaclty what makes it good. Else, what's the point of playing?
@WiiloveitOnline: You're not serious, are you? (No, of course I'm not Wiiboy in disguise) I like the game enough to complain about this review which is not only quite hostile but wrong in many points, especially the scoring.

To me Rare represents what's wrong (and has been wrong for a while) with many modern videogames: Excellent graphics with crappy gameplay...

While I'm not such a fan of so called "Eurogames", these are two excellent games that would fit perfect with the wii controls. I hope we can start seeing those games on wiiware...
Of course, online play is a must...
Re: USA WiiWare Update: Planet Pachinko and Jungle Speed
@KnucklesSonic8 Try here: http://www.boardgames.ca
@AnakinOU: I got the same treatment on a recent thread about Jungle Speed here... don't worry. Some people are just paranoid...
I agree though this game might be just better as a physical card game, unless it could be played online. Wiiware would be perfect for online boardgames, much better than the x-box which is getting all of them...
Re: Jungle Speed swings onto WiiWare next week
At first I thought it was online. To play at home I already have the original card version... I can't see how console versions of boardgames will succeed on the wii without online play. After all, if you're just playing with people around you, why not just play the real game??? It's not like it takes very long to set up and play anyway...
Re: Jungle Speed swings onto WiiWare next week
@Esposch
Huh????????
I'm not sure what you mean, but you can read about that game at http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/8098 where I'm also an active user (same avatar and name). Maybe you'll also discover a wealth of good boardgames. A bit of time away from the computer might do you good too
BTW, what's with the paranoia around here???
Re: Jungle Speed swings onto WiiWare next week
Jungle Speed is a very fun and fast paced card game (real card game with physical componets). The biggest the group, the more fun it is. Kids love it, but it's not just for kids. You've really got to pay lots of attention to the cards played as you may have to react anytime. I'm not sure how will it translate to the Wii, but I'm glad we're starting to see interesting card/board games on WiiWare too... There are tons of good board/card games that would play wonderfully on the Wii (and no, I don't mean Monopoly and Risk...)
Re: Bplus Gets The Ball Rolling With Niki – Rock 'n' Ball
There's a trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGizNM1o8Pg
I did enjoy Platchen, but I'm not too sure about this one... reminds me a bit of the ball mode in MaBoSi but more complex.
Re: Mega Man 3
So, how hard is this one as compared to MM2?
Re: Nicalis Interview: Cave Story
I'm a bit stuck right now in one of the bosses but I really like the game. Recently I've used Darwiinremote to play the game using the wiimote and that really adds to the game
BTW, about Mega Man 9: I recently got MM2 to get a taste of the series (with it being the easiest) and to my surprise I managed to finish it (I'm not a hc arcade gamer), so I went ahead and got MM9. It is considerable harder, but also the fact you can buy energy tanks at will will make getting through the game possible. Now, that said, I know I'm not getting that "Mr. Perfect" achievement
Re: World of Goo is Officially the Best Wii Game Ever
Add one more vote for the wiiware version. I don't think I'll be picking this game up unless I find a good priced 2nd hand copy.
Now, if it'd come out on wiiware, then I'll probably buy it without a second thought...
And anyway, internal memory will only be an issue for a few months more...
Re: Get Ready to Brave the Dangers of Planet Pachinko
Doesn't look much like Smash TV, when I read that I was expecting a Robotron-like game... it doesn't look bad, but I'd like to see a video too...
Re: Mindware Interview Part 2 - MaBoShi: The Three Shape Arcade
Excellet interview. This is one of my favorite wiiware games
Re: Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (24th Sept)
It's kind of strange that Platchen hasn't even entered the top 20 in the USA at 1000 points while in Europe (I'm not sure if the popular list is for the whole Europe or each country has its own) went up from 13 to 11 in the last few days at 1500 points.
Still, the game and the people that worked on it don't deserve to be laughed at (a pretty childish attitude btw) as the game, at least around here in Europe, is having moderate success even with its problems and bugs which hopefully they'll eventually fix.
Re: USA WiiWare Update: Mega Man 9 and Plättchen
@Mayhem64: Thanks. I have my eye on some other games (VC and WiiWare), but I'll consider MM9 in the future
Re: USA WiiWare Update: Mega Man 9 and Plättchen
Well, I agree the price cut is quite unfair for European gamers that bought it at full price. The fair thing to do would be to cut the price here too and give us back those 500 points, but it's not going to happen
MM9 seems very nice, but I don't think it's a game for me... unless it had a way to save your progress... In that way, Patchen (with all its confusing gameplay) seems to be the easier game of the two... Still, I'll probably get MM2 on VC before I commit to getting MM9 and see how I enjoy it.
Re: Plättchen: Twist 'n' Paint Going Up Against Mega Man 9
"@"(where I can at least feel I'm advancing each time I play)"
Well.. To be honest, Playing Plattchen (or many different puzzlers at that), you barely ever feel like you are advancing anyway >_>
I don't see the difference.. other than megaman actually has levels and bosses.. and puzzlers have..
Re: Plättchen: Twist 'n' Paint Going Up Against Mega Man 9
Interesting, I see Platchen at spot 13 in the Popular Games list... so it seems it's not doing so bad after all
Re: Plättchen: Twist 'n' Paint Going Up Against Mega Man 9
Anyway, it seems to me MegaMan9 and Plattchen are directed a different types of gamers.
Re: Plättchen: Twist 'n' Paint Going Up Against Mega Man 9
Hmm... do publishers really have a choice of when to release their games? or does Nintendo decide? I thought it was Nintendo...
Re: Review: Plättchen: Twist 'n' Paint (WiiWare)
@Gitaroo_Dude: You wish! I said all I had to say on this subject. There's no point in continuing. I have absolutely nothing to do with BPlus and I'm not leaving this site anytime soon. Cheers
Re: Review: Plättchen: Twist 'n' Paint (WiiWare)
Re: Review: Plättchen: Twist 'n' Paint (WiiWare)
Re: Review: Plättchen: Twist 'n' Paint (WiiWare)
Re: Review: Plättchen: Twist 'n' Paint (WiiWare)
@Mickeymac: C'mon, the fact that you can't win just by playing randomly is exaclty what makes it good. Else, what's the point of playing?
@WiiloveitOnline: You're not serious, are you? (No, of course I'm not Wiiboy in disguise) I like the game enough to complain about this review which is not only quite hostile but wrong in many points, especially the scoring.
