This sounds like a great game. everywhere i read that controls are solid likeness great, graphics and animation awesome.. what if we can't play online or able to create our own team from scratch? does this justify a 6? I would think about 7.5
Edit after buying and playing the game: there are ways to rename players and teams. there are camera options. (the naming of menu features is horrible) and lack of online is not a problem. BUT the features overall aren't that great. The AI of the home team is not the smartest i've seen; makes the game quite tough to play, and combined with the staple crappy menus and iOS graphics quality, as well as the commentators being a tad boring, repetitive, make a 6 quite justified.
I remember EA's FIFA when DS had come out being of higher quality. with better music and snappier more fun gameplay.
DO NOT get Splinter Cell. It's a tourist Trap! We should demand a brand new Splinter Cell for 3DS. (Splinter Cell is one of my all time favs btw and this one blows!)
9/10 indeed. for the single player. I just love this game!!! The artwork is impressive, (i never play it in 2D mode 3D is awesome!) the sounds as well, the gameplay deep, the content a lot and high quality! Level design.. amazing!
As a modern video game product though, i give it a 8.5 because i would love to play online!
Highwinter that was towards tealovertoma there see? fixed it I agree with what you say. he assumes too much.
the battle that Sony and MS are fighting right now is not to make profit but improve their Brand name. They want to at least come close to what nintendo sold so they do not appear to be "the fancy losers who got trampled all over the place by inferior hardware" and to be honest MS is more sincere and more down to earth. Otherwise they will not be able to successfully move on to the next gen. It's more about marketing for them right now and they are sort of "trapped" in that position. They have to stay for at least 2 years. Unless they dare to do the "unthinkable" and at a great loss they bring out their next gen. But even like so, nintendo following the strategy mentioned above in a business environment which is stagnant and money is short, and them bringing out a console that takes a lot more money to develop on is not going to be seen with a good eye. Same as PS3 did. In short they are trapped in their own game and nintendo dances around. It is risky dance, but so far it has worked very nicely for Ninty.
if they indeed have chosen this hardware that is being rumoured, what they are saying to the developers is we are going to keep you the same development costs with PS3 and 360, (same as they did with 3DS Vs PSP) and offer something better and innovative. If you have no idea about development business it is very difficult to understand that. They are constantly going with affordable and disruptive solutions. which is a very smart thing to do. Like a submarine in a blue ocean
They are by no means developing a €500 console. I believe they will be able to offer something around 400. 350 if they want to be competitive and they play the same game as Sony does. That is losing money from hardware gaining from software.
I see you insist about the same strength and 300 and you fail to realize that going for the same strength and same price with a new product while others offer this for 5 years now is called suicide in business
It is not about what you want, or the other guy, it is what is offered for the price asked, and the wii and DS has proven that. When i say next gen, i do not talk only about graphics, and hardware is important (i.e. DS had to have two screens, 3DS had to offer more powerful graphics and auto-stereoscopic 3D technology) All that cost more money + 30 to $50 extra for the launch and R&D expenses the first year or so.
As Corbs said, if nintendo followed what you want it would be doomed! Why should anyone buy Nintendo's new console if already PS3 with great titles is around and is in full steam right now for a similar price?
below 300 Euros? a home console that is more powerful than any on the market right now?
the cheapest, and they would be doing us a favour, is 350.I dunno how people have come to have such demands. next gen handhelds at 150.. next gen home consoles under 300... just because a certain company placed their console at $500 or 600 and they didn't offer anything new, and then had to lower their price to less than 50% to start selling after 4 years doesn't mean that every company does so. That is why 360 was doing better than them. They were more reasonable and were offering pretty much the same product if not better (they still do but it seems that they have given up). Do not compare apples and oranges my friend. We would all love these to be given for free. me too!
But we need to be rational and reasonable. Nintendo will always try to reach an affordable price for the innovation they offer. They will charge a bit extra for early adopters but nothing exorbitant. It is their philosophy, That is guaranteed!
But first, lets wait and see what is really there!
i repeat. If you are into boats and such, Steel Diver is an awesome game. A bit on the niche side i admit but a great game none the less. Periscope mode challenge is great fun, and the whole concept of treating each level as a challenge is great. plus the naval battle "table" game is great. I only wish they had world ranking for the challenges and online multiplayer for the naval battle game.
expensive and bulky ? are you sure you're in the right blog community?
the first part depends on many things. but bulky? come on! this is about the same size as lite or dsi in fact a tiny bit smaller than dsi! the only device that is smaller is PSPgo.
yeah well with 400.000 that they sold as a first batch and the millions of people spread all over the kingdom it is hard to get hits. if there was such a place like akihabara etc where all the gamers hang out it would be great. Maybe in oxford street or e3 or certain video game stores etc definitely college or school.. . it will be easier to get new people this way.
Skotski is right! pikmin is an awesome game, not many people bought,
steel diver is awesome too! not many people care, critics gave it a mediocre rating too (wtf do they know? if their a$$ was ever on a real boat they would feel what's good with it! it feels so much like handling a boat to classify that game as a "casual" submarine simulator and the levels and gameplay are top notch!)
Chibi Robo the poor thing got lost in the transition, and Pandora's Tower looks like a supreme game. (Could we please get something like PT on 3DS?)
Originality is often burried from the same people that yell for originality. Yet all the awesome experimental games made on gamecube got the shaft. PN.03 for instance (not from nintendo but awesome game) Zak and Wiki on wii and so many others.
"This is the internet. Everything is about getting traffic to your site so we can all drive our Ferraris and live in our 52 room mansions."
Say that again. wait! , i already did! especially kotaku has become very disgusting! although i don't think these guys live in such mansions and drive such cars, but it sure is obvious they do their best to afford them!
it will be 2012. the others will either be forced to admit defeat and start their new cycle sooner than intended, or be taken for yet another ride
dear NL, it seems that your previous images might actually have been correct! at least in the sense that they actually were giving the right hints. (i.e. hardware that resembles 360) the controller might not be like that one but that is the gist of it. that it. sort of, goes back to the roots of classic controllers while maintaining a modern outlook, AND it would allow us to comfortably play our games on the couch, or ANYWHERE at home, only much better than ipad ever hoped it would!! a controller will be needed but not necessarily yourself being stuck in front of a TV. Stream would be the perfect name for it!
wow! he didn't deny anything! he just "said": this thing is there, just wait for an official announcement and do not try to convince us to announce anything before we believe it is time.
and whoever thinks this is for real, just check the technical drawings. the buttons and sticks are crammed leaving no safe area around the screen.
there is no chance they would leave so little plastic around a button and no breathing space for each element. check your every handheld you will see that there is never so little space between the buttons and the screen. if this was real, it's really bad design.
this design has too many similarities with 360. it is most probably fake and definitely ugly.
for split screen is the perfect solution, but we have 3DS with 3D graphics too if we needed a handheld controller like that it could be the next edition of 3DS and not wii 2 unless this is family pack 3DS Ultra with Home game Server
in metacritic I see 59 from the critics and 7.3 from the gamers.
I expected this game to be an authentic button masher with some more depth if you decide to put some more effort. After reading all the comments and the review i understand that this is what it is.I am going to buy it!
However I would expect the AI to take care of the group members properly but not entirely. In our days sub-par AI plain sucks. I think that we are going to see more handheld games suffering from poor AI for the time being, as we have in the past. I would prefer it more if it wasn't very repetitive and there was an effort to break that feeling. Good AI on handhelds is, sadly, often an afterthought and requires resources which are used mainly for graphics. These imo are the reasons that the game didn't get much higher ratings than this, and it is obvious that these things matter differently between a reviewer and a gamer.
Good games need good AI. I think this is where first party titles often differ. Nintendo think of their products first as games, and then as products. The others mostly think of them as products which have to be good games in order to lure mainly with strong graphics some good chunk of sales out of the huge userbase of wii and ds to make a profit.
Lets hope that this generation of handhelds which has a separate graphics unit will change that, but first the developers have to realize that they can't make handheld games like that any more and that they should pay the necessary attention to AI and deliver more than just basic pathfinding and HP related reactions.
@Goomba77 yes it was. we all knew which games are coming out for 3DS very well in advance. i got a 3DS because there are at least 5 games i am interested in, and the coming months a few more are coming out, combined with my PC gaming my job and my personal life, i have full days for a long time. if you like tactical games you should definitely try ghost recon. ( i also got PES) and i have yet to play pilotwings, (is it really good?)
it all depends on software. keep bringing great gundams, metal gear solid, monster hunter, some hot western style rpgs, sci fi FPS, furious hack and slash action, a new ninja gaiden, and ofc dragon quest and pokemons and you're good to go!
ah crap! why did they have to do that UBIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII shame on you. Chaos Theory is the best Splinter Cell game. They could actually have ported the PC game instead with same graphics and features. It seems they ported the gameloft game with new assets. that is how they had the same crappy camera and controls i guess I had bought this for DS. It was a port of the mobile game from gameloft. They repeated the same mistake twice! (at least)
no point, they just generate interest and give blogs something more to write it's all about the money honey! and they have found the perfect way to make money without doing much really so i would give them a 5 for their achievements

@WaltzElf The problem with this is that it is not made for teenage virgin geeks who do not understand that "adult fun" can also be other than a Resident Evil game

Re: Nintendo Defends European Retailers' Pricing of the 3DS
Ok you might want to know, that the European Union had taken Nintendo to the courts because it is illegal in EU for a company to have fixed prices like Nintendo did in the past and they were heavily fined for that!
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSBRU00739120090430
http://www.law360.com/competition/articles/99310/eu-court-lops-30m-off-nintendo-parallel-trade-fine
so the EU fined them because they were not letting competition to work and us, the consumers to get products cheaply, and now, retailers charge extra premium
Nintendo was actually protecting us from the GREED of the retailers.
And so,
The "credit" goes to our fellow countrymen, that instead of selling in lower prices they have become a cartel that arranged a high price because they saw how much we really want a 3DS and how awesome it really is!! it is NOT Nintendo to blame. It is the retailers of each country in EU that decide the price according to European legislation.
P.S. I believe that it is actually the retailers of Europe who took Nintendo to the court because usually EU doesn't do that by themselves. They did that because Nintendo had fixed prices and with the VAT the profit margin for the retailers was low. So they found a way to break Nintendo's protection toward the customer using legal means.
