A clever ploy — this article is so bad that I had to create an account for Nintendo Life to disagree. "a generally not-that-enjoyable premise" : It's a puzzle solving game. What's the premise of Tetris, or Puyo Puyo for that matter? The theme of Dr. Mario has a great deal of charm, and is more than enough to keep me engaged in the underlying puzzle. "a single wrong move could scupper you completely with next to no chance of meaningful recovery" : This outs the author as either an imbecile or a quitter. As one who plays Dr. Mario on an actually competitive level, there is no single misdrop that is impossible to recover from, even on 20 HI. If a single misplay is causing you to top out, then you need to become more practiced in Dr. Mario, which is the requirement of literally every puzzle game. "You can, in theory 'chain' your pills and viruses by having loose segments fall down the jar as they are separated, but this is awkward and annoying to pull off." : Combos are the beauty of single player, and the necessity of versus. If you find them awkward and annoying, this game simply isn't for you. In the end, I know I am upset that a reviewer didn't enjoy a game that I obviously do. Just wanted to put my own voice out there that says this game has more to offer than the author suggests. It's not a 10/10 game, but it deserves more than 4/10 just because "it's not Puyo Puyo".
