@flummerfelt The first two are connected somewhat I think, but for the most part they're standalone. I've heard that IV isn't as brutal. If you have a PS3, I'd say try SMT3: Nocturne. If you can handle that then you could probably handle any of them.

Mario world has a huge world map. Which game was the first in the series to have world maps? Mario 3. It also introduced themed worlds to the series.
SMW is an amazing game, but I don't think it would have even existed without SMB3
