Re: Talking Point: How Many Hours Is A 'Short' Game For You?

TheMaverickk

Personally it isn't about how long a game is, but the quality of time spent playing it.

Different games provide different experiences. I mean the original Star Fox can essentially be beaten in about 25-35 minute session. That said there are multiple routes and different outcomes for repeat runs. You are highly incentivized to play it over and over again. Mind you even then it's probably a 2-3 hours to find everything in it. Still it's a fast paced and fun time, pure action that keeps you coming back.

Then you have JRPG's which can easily drag out their run time with level grinding, side quests, running back and forth across the map, you name it. Easily padding out gameplay time from 60-100 hours easily. They can be a slow burn, fun and great adventures certainly, but definitely are times where you question if every hour you spent hunting some rare item was really worth it. Mind you there is a joy in grinding as well for those who get into it.

Pacing is important from genre to genre, and ultimately I boil it down to the overall experience. If I had a great time, and the game left a lasting impression, or makes me want to go back and replay it, who cares if it was only 3 or 4 hours to complete it. Personally I don't equate time completion with $$$ value. It can be just as challenging developing a 6 hour game as developing a 40 hour game.

Re: Dead By Daylight Is Getting A Colourblind Mode Following Provocative Comments By One Of Its Designers

TheMaverickk

@Tulio517 Yeah the game is 4 years old, but it's very clear their time and resources have gone into creating content to keep the game and community alive. It's not as though they've spent 4 years sitting around doing nothing since the game launched.

I understand that the comments were in bad taste, but he is clearly someone who is frustrated based on his comments;

"Continuing to, to badger us about it isn't going to change anything. If it gets done it'll get done when we'll, when we have time to do it"

If there is one thing I've seen out there is a lot of vocal gaming groups, some can be really rude and nasty to developers. Even if what they are asking is something that would be beneficial to minority groups that have difficulties with certain aspects of the game. Badgering people, harassing them to change thing, it can make people resistant to doing something about it.

Re: Soapbox: Since When Did Physical Releases Stop Being About Physical Games?

TheMaverickk

Always physical when I can.

I feel like "Limited Editions" is almost a separate issue from a physical release. The biggest key reason is jus that the big companies out there can't just take the game down or remove access to it.

Which true story we are seeing happen more and more over time. Licensed games becoming even harder.

The other benefit is being able to share a game with my friends and family with out having to buy multiple copies. I can lend it to my girlfriend if she wants to play it.

As for the junk that often comes with collectors editions... things like cheap plastic figures, or sticker sheets, or at books. As a consumer you just gotta practice smart buy choices, and a little self restraint. Is it worth an extra $30 to get a ticker sheet and a fold out poster. Probably not, so then don't buy it.

I've passed on plenty of "Collectors" editions for such a reason. Pretty much every physical game production company right now follows the "everyone who orders gets a copy cause we produce afterwards" business model. Mind you, you honestly can't go wrong paying the base amount of roughly $40 for physical copy of an indie game you may never see again in physical form.

Also these games wouldn't be produced otherwise

Re: Nicalis Is Issuing DMCA Takedown Notices To Free Versions Of Cave Story

TheMaverickk

Nicalis has a long running tradition of being bad to work with for many indie developers. I first saw something was wrong when they were supposed to publish La-Mulana on Wii back in 2011. The devs mentioned that there was poor communication, and issues with getting it lot checked, and they cancelled publishing the game in North America with no discussion with the devs (they literally found out the morning as they announced it on Twitter). There was some shady stuff going on there and since then I've had mixed feelings about Nicalis.

I saw them repeatedly re-releasing Cave Story and it did continuously feel like a cash grab from what I could see. Inserting Cave Story characters in everything. It was almost like they were using the IP as freely as they wanted.

Interestingly when the time came Pixel published Kero Blaster with Playism and NOT Nicalis. Mind you I don't think Pixel has ever openly said anything in regards to why he didn't work with Nicalis to publish again. Playism is also the company that ended up publishing La-Mulana in the west finally.

I know that there was a recent thing where Nicalis published Mr.Tako as well and that publishing relationship got broken off for one reason or another.

Edmund McMillan broke off ties with Nicalis in 2019 as well due to the accusations against Tyrone.

So yeah I'm very interested in the fact that Nicalis is now sending DMCA's regarding Cave Story and trying to shut down fan mods of the original FREE release that Pixel made. Cause if they actually have the authority to do that, it means whatever contract they made with Pixel back in the day with Cave Story, it sounds like they screwed him over in regards to control over his IP. Who knows though, that's something that hasn't come out yet.

Also I find it interesting that people are bringing Nintendo into this saying "Nintendo does this all the time"... which to be made clear this is a very different situation.

Nintendo owns the rights to all their IP's, and games.

Nicalis as far as the public knows, shouldn't own control over Cave Story and be able to send DMCA's against these fan mods (Pixel the dev could if he wanted, but he isn't).

So either Nicalis stole copyright control from Pixel using legal contract mumbo jumbo when they published the game 10 years ago. Or they are sending DMCA's to people that they don't have any legal right to be sending. Both are lower than low moves.

Re: Mass Effect Trilogy Could Yet Come To Wii U

TheMaverickk

Mass Effect trilogy on Wii U would at least be worth picking up.

I'm not purchasing Mass Effect 3 on the Wii U for the very reason that I've never played the first two so seems a bit wrong to start with the 3rd title.

If they release a trilogy collection like they did for the PS3 it's a no brainer and I'll buy it and play it from start to finish.

Re: Petition Started To Get Dark Souls II On The Wii U

TheMaverickk

On the topic of "petitioning games" I'd like to see Dead Space 3 brought to the Wii U.

Dead Space Extraction was on the Wii and it's personally how I discovered the series, and since then I've purchased and played both Dead Space 1 & 2 on my computer through Steam.

With that said if they released Dead Space 3 for the Wii U, I'd more then support it with a console purchase.

I also happen to think the game would be a perfect fit on the Wii U. Specifically because you can do co-op in the same room using seperate screens. Similar to how Black Ops 2 allows.

So not sure who started this petition for Dark Souls II, but they should consider setting up another one for Dead Space 3.... I've also signed the Dark Souls II petition not, cause yeah... I want that just as much.
