Getting more games than one is a privilege, not a right. Be happy we have a treasure trove of retro games at our disposal unlike some certain starving kids in Africa and stop setting fantasy expectations.
An example needs to be set by our founding fathers of VC-reviews, whining shouldn't be encouraged.
Why is it a privilege again? Starving kids in Africa? Founding Fathers? WTF are you talking about?
Nintendo sells a product. We can criticize them or praise then any way we feel depending on their service/products.
As a result of their shovelware, overpriced VC games, and lack of quality VC games, I sold my Wii on Ebay last week.
11. Badluckartist United States 15 Dec 2008, 14:13 GMT
I've spent well over a couple hundred bells on the VC, most of which for games that I've already had at some point. To be smacked in the face like this for what now, four weeks in a row? Ridiculous.
Now I use a healthy combo of HDMI from my laptop to my Tv, Glovepie, my Wiimote and Classic Controller, and various roms and emulators to get my nostalgic needs.
I understand the need to "space things out" for marketing reasons or whatever, but this is getting stupid.
Agreed. Just put my Wii on ebay. 40 VC games, yet I haven't downloaded one in months. Nintendo. You have lost me.
I also wanted to add that I haven't bought anything for the Wii or even so much as turned it on in several months.
Actually thinking of modding it or selling it on Ebay. Why pay or wait for crappy games when I can just download all 758 NES games in 10 seconds as well as almost every other game on a bunch of other systems.
@post 39: Far as I know it, the VC reviews are opinion, not fact. In fact, I'm pretty sure they actually reviewed it quite a bit better than the reception it got when it was originally released.
I just wanted to quote somebody since you guys still haven't figured out how, for some reason.
No reason for them not to release some more quality games. They have really sunk in my eyes. Nintendo used to at least mean quality to me. Now they have just came up with a new plan. Make a cheap system, make a million cheap games and unfortunately, its working for them as they are just raking in the dough.
On the fence on this one. I can get past the simple combat because I'm not sure I could handle a turn based rpg anymore anyway.
But what is the story about, and are the quests your typical rescue somebodies dog or teddy bear, take this letter to somebody, or other lame attempts at humor?
What do you mean it was never released here? Im confused. There were a ton of ports to lesser systems, but a full arcade port was also released for Xbox Live about a year ago.
Im shocked at all the love Earthbound gets. I played it and enjoyed it till near the end when things just got weird. I am betting there will be a lot of disappointed people when they play it for the first time.
Every week I get closer and closer to putting my Wii on Ebay. To be honest the only redeeming factor the Wii has for me is housing a lot of the retro titles under one roof (system).
I also have a sneaky suspicion that Nintendo will re-release all these very same games re-mastered in HD and provide online play.
42. Marioman64 United States 04 Mar 2008, 11:15 GMT
you know... Nintendo could just not give us any vc games. we should be thankful, not picky.
I couldn't disagree more. I bought my Wii with the expectation that they would release a steady stream of VC game because that is part of their advertisement for the Wii. They aren't handing these game out for free you know?
I think you have it backwards. Nintendo is privileged to be getting our money, not the other way around.
ETA- The VC is also the only use I get out of the system.
38. Jack Canada 19 Feb 2008, 16:26 GMT Steady Mobbin, I played both games years ago so my memory could be playing tricks. Both games have tough monsters, and that’s what you refer as hard. In reality it’s not hard, you just need patience and level up. If you played Phantasy Star you know that the 3D dungeons can be more frustrating. That’s what I refer as hard but I guess both games are challenging compared to modern games. Anyway, all the games are great and worth playing, I’m just a very big fan of the first game.
For me, the 3d dungeons are much easier. I also wish they would have kept them. Much more fun. Not because they are easier (for me) but because they were different at the time and they also break up the same top down look.
I am also a huge fan of the original. GREAT game that deserves a remake.
I remember enjoying PSIII more. PSII is a major departure from the first game. I’m not referring to the story but the 3D dungeons. Big difference in gameplay. PSII is very linear, no need for a hint book. PS1 have confusing dungeons so it’s HARDER. (and more fun!)
The PS2, PS3, & PS4 versions all have the same top down view throughout. PS3 was the very plan version that didn't even take place among the Algol star system.
And I don't think you ever completed PS2 if you think the dungeons are easy. The monsters in most dungeons are so over powered and as the guy above said, some of the level layouts are insanely frustrating to navigate. Especially the island level where you search for the tree to make the gum.
IMO, the worst Phantasy Star game but still a great game. I hate the ending and it's a major departure from the first game. If you think this is hard you need to play the first game. This is the most expensive game I ever bought and it was a big disappointment. Not even close to the greatness of the original.
I think you forgot about PSIII. Easily the worst one by a landslide.
The first game was EASY compared to this. To be honest, are ANY turn based RPG's like this even "hard"?
Unless you bought PS1 used, you paid more for PS1 ($70) then PS2. ($60)
And Im also confused about your statement about it being a "major departure from the first game". It's essentially the same story 1,000 years after the first game. You still visit the same three planets. In fact, I think this is the closest to the original in story then all the others.
@Steady: Well, I'm not a PS veteran like you, but from what I've seen, there's nothing that would make me choose PSII over PSIV. Like I said somewhere else, this is a solid game, but does smell kinda funky in the year 2008. To me, the upgrades in PSIV DOES give me a more appealing experience than this.
However, the beginning of this game and the first dialogue with Nei sends shivers down my spine for some reason.
That last part is what still draws me to this game. It's absolutely the nostalgia factor for me. I played the original Phantasy Star and PSII as a kid. I was probably 9 or 10 when it came out and it was just an awesome experience at that time. Like I mentioned before, I wouldn't be caught dead playing a new turn based RPG, but I will play this one just to hear some of the old sounds and the music.
And of course if you compare this to the fourth installment, it will suffer. But PSIV is this exact game with a different story and better graphics. Hardly fair to expect this to be better graphically, but for me the story is much better and actually feels like it belongs. You are actually in the same star system as the first installment, unlike in IV which IIRC, takes place in some future/ parallel version of the PS universe. Don't get me wrong, PSIV was an awesome game and I REALLY liked the comic book styled presentation in the cut scenes, but I like this story so much better. The Mother Brain controlling the planet was money. As you progress later in the game there are some really difficult dungeons and I have no idea how they expect you to complete them w/o the original guide that came with the game. (This was a gaming first as well btw)
This is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. I can understand that if you didn't play it when it came out, then you won't enjoy it as much as I do, but it is indeed a gaming classic. I no longer play turn based RPG's, but I will DL this the day it hits the VC. IMHO this is by far the best Phantasy Star game both for it's story and gameplay experience. A lot of people love the fourth edition to the series but that was just this game repackaged with better graphics and a story that doesn't really seem like it's part of the original story. PSIII was a disaster. As were the PS Online games. I can't tell you how disappointed I am in those games. They are just poor games with the PS brand.
This is a fairly hard RPG if you don't use cheats, and impossible if you don't look at a map. There aren't really any parts where you have to level up as long as you fight everything that pops up. Either way you're going to have to fight for xp, but if you fight everything that pops up, you won't need to spend hours leveling up.
Really good story, some really good music, and a lot of different npc's to fight with you. Great Game imho.
Again, this is all just my opinion, coming from an old school gamer who played all the PS games when they were initially released. (I paid $70 for PS1 !!!)

a gamer (USA) - 11 Jun 2007, 23:04 GMT worst week yet? ffs its f*ckin sonic 2 and golden axe 2 you even complained when we f*ckin got actraiser
Slow down killer, you're at a 15 and we need you at a 7. There are a billion Kevin's on this board. I have only posted twice on this board. While it might not be the worst week yet, (try not to take the internet so seriously) it wasn't great. Golden axe games are weak. Sonic 2 is pretty solid, but we just got Sonic 1 and like I said before it can be had on a gamecube collection disk with all the older Sonic games for just about the same price of the VC game. Trust me, they aren't so good that you want to spend 5-6 times more just to have them on your VC. You''ll play it a few times and then you'll put it away.
Golden Axe II and Sonic 2 can both be had on classic collections. The only reason to get Load Runner is if you want to play an EARLY classic PC game. Didn't I play that on the Apple IIe?

I'm confused by the review. This is a very solid game for it's generation. IMHO, it's far better then the review suggests. It also isn't nearly as hard as suggested.
For $5/$6 it isn't bad at all. Certainly one of the best VC games considering most of the garbage that has come out.
There are secrets, challenging game play, items to save and buy, and riddles/tips that must be solved to figure out what to do next.
Odd yes, but I recommend it if you can see past the dated graphics.
I wanted to write a small review to warn others from spending points on this mediocre title since it seems so strongly suggested here.
I have no idea why so many people seem to like this version. I have played just about every Castlevania and this, while it isn't the worst, it is far from a "great" game.
The music is OK, but it doesn't fit the game. Overall it is very monotonous and lulls you to sleep. Not bad, but it's not dark like most of the the Castlevania games tend to be.
The gameplay is just average. No better or worse then past generations. This is the first time you can hold your whip out and actually swing it around even after it has fully extended.
Overall this game is pretty boring and I would not recommend it. If you never played it and you're a big Castlevania fan, go ahead and get it. If you are on the fence, save your points/money and pass.
Jimbob, I think you're off your rocker with that nonsense about SoV being the best Genesis RPG. I would rank Phantasy Star II, PSIII, and the Shining Darkness series well above SoV.
I'm not sure if I played this or not it's been so long ago. I also agree that the Master System Alex Kidd games were fun.
I also agree that the Master System was a far better system and had superior graphics then the NES. The NES got the love from the 3rd party game developers. Both were great, but there are more games I would rather play on the SMS then the NES. (Well, besides Tecmo Super Bowl!)
