I so hope they keep it a hybrid system capable of playing tv and handheld. I love the Switch because I can play console quality games portably. I play 99% of my games in handheld because it’s convenient and comfortable for me. It’s why I love it more than the PS4 or Xbox.
@Kimyonaakuma Would have bought Revelations if there would have been a common physical version to purchase. But it was severely limited being confined to a small print run for the special editions and then, you know, the fun digital store front that eventually closes — where all the digital copies don’t continue to circulate through the used market but, just, disappear. That’s fun.
So stoked for this. It’s great that people got to enjoy the Crossbell duology over the years via fan translation, but there’s a significant portion of gamers who either don’t play games on PC or don’t mess with fan translation stuff. I’ve been holding out for hope they eventually these games would get an official release and here we are!
As for the LE, I’ve been slightly torn as I could spend significantly less on the standard copy via Best Buy (using reward certificates) and I’d still get the mini art book — the digital OST would actually be more convenient than a physical CD, too, and I don’t care much for the acrylic stands/cloth poster items… on the other hand, that outer box, hardback art book, and steel book looks great. It’s a good problem to have when we get choices!
Either way, I hope old and new fans support these official releases. It’ll show Falcom the West is hungry for more Trails and hopefully continue to push them to get localization more in sync than it has in past years — which has been dreadfully slow.
To everyone who does the whole “accctualy, you can just play Cold Steel 1 & 2 on PC or PS4”: not everyone has multiple systems. The problem isn’t that there is no localized version, it’s that Nintendo-only owners only have access to Cold Steel 3 & 4.
I am all for bringing as many Legend of Heroes games to Switch as possible. Playing JRPG’s portable is the best. I am so stoked we are finally getting official localized versions of the Crossbell duology, not to mention physical copies. It’s a dream come true! Having Reverie, the next game after Cold Steel IV on Switch is fantastic as well.
With that said, I still think it’s a huge shame a deal can’t be worked out with XSEED and Clouded Leopard to bring Cold Steel 1 & 2 (which are already on switch) to the west. Not to mention the Sky trilogy still being absent despite being precursors to the Crossbell games which we are getting.
I’m definitely interested, but the lack of a standard physical option through other retailers is really making me think twice about pulling the trigger. I don’t want this game that badly.
This would be fantastic. The game, regardless of which version, needs to be on modern platforms. And I’d love to be able to buy a physical copy that doesn’t cost me hundreds of dollars. Loved P3P back when I played it on my Vita and would love to re-play it again in the future on my Switch.
@Meteoroid very true. Can’t speak Japanese, but any news on DQX offline is good news in my opinion. And it always raises my hopes we’ll see a localized version.
@CodyMKW that’s true, but if there’s no English translation, then for 99% of the western audience it will be about as good as having a nice collectible to put on a shelf. I’ve tried to play games in Japanese and, nah, I don’t have the time or patience to spend hours throughout the course of a game trying to translate or check a source to be able to figure out what’s happening in the game, what characters are saying, etc.
If ever we had a chance at getting a localized version of DQX, it’s now. The online MMO would take a lot more effort and be more costly to bring over here to a market where DQ is still fairly niche compared to most JRPG franchises, but the offline version would be a one and done effort (similar to bringing VII over to the 3DS).
I think it looks fantastic. I don’t mind the chibi look. And I’m so hoping it happens. This would be my number 1 anticipated game to play next on my Switch if they announced it. Please SE!
I have absolutely no issue using “earthbound-like” or anything similar to help describe the look/feel/gameplay of a new game. I don’t understand why it triggers so many people — we use images and categories and genres to help describe things and make sense of them. Metroidvania, souls-like, etc. It helps me get a general idea of what type of game I might be learning about and whether or not I want to research further.
With all that said, Omori looks crazy good and very earthbound-inspired … while completely unique at the same time and I’m all for it. Here’s to hoping there’s a sick physical release in the future for Switch (though I’m pining for a what-if scenario where we received a physical Omori 3DS copy).
@dugan the older I get, the more valuable time is and putting myself through the ringer just to try and “beat” a game just isn’t worth it to me anymore.
I enjoy a moderate challenge in some games, but not when it means me repeatedly losing hours of progress, wasting time wandering around trying to figure out what to do next, etc.
Hollow Knight looks gorgeous though. And I’ve heard almost nothing but good things about it. But the sparse save points and so on keep me back for sure.
@Guitar_bard For sure, and I hope you do! Just like the games, they’ve shot up in price to near absurd amounts. I don’t know how, but I managed to get VI’s guide for $30! IV’s was a bit more at $40, but that’s the lowest I’ve seen for both.
And I know there’s a divide between “use strategy guides and have fun” and “using strategy guides is cheating and a big no-no” but for these types of older JRPGs that don’t hold your hand, (and I hear VI is especially open and non-linear/hand-hold-y) I’d have to have a guide if I wanted to get all the way through — and I do. Haha!
@Guitar_bard Oh that’s awesome! I never hear anyone talking about DQVI. Seems like it’s often ignored or disliked.
I recently went on a big hunt to gather up all the remaining mainline DQ entries that I was missing in my collection, which included me having to pay exorbitant prices for the DS Zenithian trilogy (I refused to buy the mobile ports — even if they retained the party chat feature). Managed to also get the IV and VI strategy guides, too. I’m almost done with my play-through of IV, and then will be excited to eventually jump into V and VI as well.
Received my preorder from Best Buy of SMT III: Nocturne HD Remaster, but it’ll be going on the backlog for now. Thankful to have a “merciful” mode for when I eventually do get around to playing it.
Currently playing Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen on DS. I’m in the final stretch, nearing the 30 hr mark and I’ve been loving every minute of this wonderfully unique yet classic JRPG.
Recently started a new play-through of Earthbound on 3DS, though it’s taking a back seat to me finishing DQIV first. But I couldn’t resist starting it up and playing the opening hour or so. I had played 60-70% of it a handful of years back via emulation on my PSP, but amidst several issues with that set up I ended up (regrettably) losing my save data and subsequently never managed to finish it. Loved what I had played though, so I’m excited to jump into this and finish my first full play-through next after DQIV.
Several games I’ve shelved for the time being after making moderate progress: Persona 5 Strikers, Tales of Vesperia, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Trails of Cold Steel II...
Battling the backlog continues ad infinitum. But better to have more games than less I suppose.

@DASchenk They’re available at most retailers!

I’ve been waiting for what seems like years to pick up a physical copy for the Switch. I’ll be going for the standard edition. Can’t wait!
