Rare needs to come back to Nintendo. Banjo Tooie is my favorite games of all time and even though there was a lot of backtracking, I still enjoyed exploring more of the huge environments with my new moves. With Microsoft they can't bring back that great gameplay style of the NES SNES and 64 days.
This game is horrible. This game is the Super Mario Sunshine and Castlevania 2 of sequels. The worst problem is the control. The original's controls were notorious for being unusually stiff. BUT, each dungeon played on this design and once you progressed through the game, you did get used to it and loved it. This game lets you move freely BUT each level still feels like they're meant for that grid style control. To quote the great HVGN, the game looks like StarTropics, kinda feels like StarTropics, but doesn't play at all like StarTropics. It's a game with an identity crisis.
The ninja and Japanese feel reminds me of Pocky and Rocky which is the best vertical scrolling run and gun ever made. Great review that's spot on Corbie!

This game isn't that bad. It has it's flaws but it's better than Elevator Action. And playing with the regular controller is better than using that flawed light gun anyway. 4/10 IMO
How does Legend of Kage and Operation Wolf get bad reviews and this gets a 6? This game has aged the worst out of all of the old school Taito arcade games.
It deserves a 6/10 for the nostalgia and the fun Co-Op mode. it's a good game and it's fun still today. It's a little expensive though I definitely agree.
Well SeniorDingDong, if you count the Turbo Grafx 16/PC Engine as an 8 bit console then that console has the best port of R Type on an 8 bit console. And yeah Swerd_Murd it's not the best shmup IMO (I'd give that to Gate of Thunder), but I still think it's better than Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun or any of the other bullet hell shmups like Dodonpachi.
But if you haven't played the original R-Type, then you need to stop and go download the port R-Type Dimensions on XBLA. Seriously, there's a reason the Guiness Book Of World Records put R-Type at No. 1 on their List of Shmups Worth Playing. It's because the game is freaking awesome.
How on earth does this crappy game get a 6/10 while Darius Twin gets a 5/10? Mind you Darius Twin wasn't anything too spectacular but it was fun in co-op and the lessened difficulty makes it a great introductory game for those new to the Shmup genre. Alas I digress. As for this crapfest of a game, there are way too many problems in the controls for it to even be remotely enjoyable. I can't name all of them but my bottom line is just get Zombies Ate My Neighbors instead.
It's as good as the SNES games and is a solid game. Collecting things does give you an incentive to replay it over and over again. But the reason why I like this game is the level design. There's a lot to explore and you need to do this to beat the game. The 2 player coop is awesome as well although I would have liked an option for 3 or 4 players.
This is definitely one of the best shmups for the GB. R Type DX is better but this still has excellent playability and definitely worth your time. It's understandable that 2 levels were stripped because it was an early GB title. Great Review and yeah LuWiiGi, I hope that it gets a rerelease for the 3DS VC.
I don't think this game deserves a 9. More like a 7. First off, the charm and cheek that Mega Man 9 has is gone from here. The game lacks any sense of humor and takes itself way too seriously. Second, the challenges are dumb and add little to the gameplay. Last and most importantly, the music sucks in comparison to the originals. Every stage song matches and feels right with that level but the tunes aren't catchy at all with little to no melody. IMO this is the worst 8 bit Mega Man even worse than 4, 5, and 6.
This game is the first WiiWare game I got. I'm glad I got it because it's a pretty good improvement. Obviously the seller for me was the 4 player co-op.
It's the remake that Excitebike fans have been waiting for. Excitetruck and Excitebots may have more modes and depth, but the simplicity of this wii-make wins me over those titles.
This game has more in common with Wild Guns rather than Sin and Punishment. It's a solid game but my only problem is that the crosshair is really small so it's hard to shoot far away enemies. IMO this deserves a 8/10 and it's worth your time.
It's great but not as good as Terranigma although better than Soul Blazer because Illusion adds better design in the dungeons and puzzles that keep your mind moving. The music is highly memorable as well. The difficult does increase and decrease at strange intervals but that didn't deter the experience for me. IMO it deserves a 9/10.
The most underrated Action RPG of all time. Shame the game had one of the worst box arts in the whole Genesis library. It definitely is worth your time.
This game was way past it's time and I'm glad to hear that you mentioned it's unique AI. This set the stage for Compiles later achievements in shmup gaming such as GunNac, Blazing Lazers, and MUSHA. IMO it deserves and 8/10 for being so unique with stellar gameplay.
The greatest 2D platformer of all time bar none. If you haven't played this game, then you aren't a true gamer. This game embodies what games are truly like. Balanced difficulty without ever feeling too easy or too hard, the unique and varied level design, catchy and memorable music, and detailed graphics for the time. This is my 2nd favorite game of all time.
It's good and definitely one of the best Mario games. But it pales in comparison to Mario 3. Super Mario World is way too easy and it started a decline of Mario games having the tough as nails difficulty of the original trilogy of the NES. Yoshi's Island, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 were all very easy as well.
Best R Type game IMO. Best Level Design, Best Music, but R Type Final and R Type Delta do have better visuals. Warning: this game is hard, very very hard. Oh and it's definitely the best shmup on the SNES beating out Space Megaforce (Super Aleste) and Axelay.
Is there any reason not to like this game? Yuzo Koshiro himself declared that this game's music was his best work. The gameplay is nothing short of brillince perfectly blending an awesome action platformer with a simple and easy sim city type section. This game deserves to be in anyone's top 10 SNES games of all time.
The slowdown helps in this game tremendously because the game can get extremely difficult especially in that last part with those freakin ninjas coming up at you. Overall the game has good control and gameplay without ever feeling stale. Great review but I personally would have given it an 8/10
If you play the game with multiple players, the enemies become much easier to kill as each player can focus on crowd control. With 5 people there's an immense amount of strategy to be had in this game as you as a team need to decide who needs the white potions or the black potions more, when to use each potion, and when to position your team to easily attack bosses or enemies. There's way more depth than in Gauntlet and I agree with LasaFrog that this game surpasses Gauntlet in every single way possible.
At No. 4, the game does have limited continues but the game is not too difficult and you should rack up a lot of lives and points. Also the levels in Bonk's Revenge have a lot of non linear sections that do require a ton of exploration which isn't found in Mario and only used a little bit in Sonic (I don't even explore the levels in Sonic anyway as I wanted to get the high score and the fastest level time). Bonk 3's candy system does add a little bit of depth but the level design is too generic and lame. IMO Bonk's Revenge 9/10, Bonk's Adventure 8/10, and Bonk 3 7/10
The level design sticks out out of all the Bonk games. It's definitely the best one out of the series. As for Bonk 3, the game's level design feels recycled from the past games so the game feels old and outdated. The co-op doesn't add much to the gameplay either. Bonk's Revenge has better platforming and music than Bonk 3 overall. If you need to get one TG-16 game, make it Gate of Thunder. IMO it's the best shmup of all time.
I agree completely with Corbs, this is the best shmup of all time. The level design, music, and controls are all perfect. If perfection is possible in a shmup, this is it. And at President_Leever, Lords of Thunder's music can get cheesy and grating as well but it's still enjoyable like Gate.
Awesome game by Natsume. Glad that this and Shadow of the Ninja got VC releases. Now just need to wait for Ninja Warriors, Pocky and Rocky, and the Lufia series cuz finding the actual carts for all of these games is too much of a hassle.
The first Mario party game I played. This game holds a special place in my heart. It's definitely the best Mario Party GCN game because it kept the formula simple like the first 3. Every other Mario Party game after this added way too much to a formula that stood the test of time although it's perfectly understandable why.
It's one of the best games on the SNES and it's Quintet's greatest game ever bar none. I do prefer Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, and Final Fantasy 6 more than this but this game is very close to the perfection of the aformentioned games.
The game is great and wacky for sure. It's one of my personal favorite N64 games. My only problem is that I would constantly get lost wandering in the world of Japan. This frustrated the heck out of me. Oh yeah, Andrew you did make a tiny mistake in the review. There is a way to fixate the camera in the game. Just hold the R button and press either the left or right C buttons to fixate the camera to fit your needs. Amazingly not many people know this. I found this out because I played a lot of Banjo Kazooie before moving on to this game.
This game ranks in my top 20 SNES games of all time. It's so good and Quintet used some this game's sprites for the pseudo sequels Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma. It is one of the greatest Action RPGs ever released.
I hate this game a lot. This game is the reason I hate the Gamecube. Oh where do I begin. First off, the camera is terrible. There are countless times where I was stuck because I mistimed my jump and landed in an area where the camera would just go ballistic. Seriously, they should have done a Banjo-Kazooie type of camera. That game had the perfect camera. Secondly, the music is a downgrade from 64. All of the tunes in my opinion are highly forgettable and only add ambiance to the game. Sorry, Super Mario 64 had better music. Lastly the control feels slippery. In Mario 64 it was a minor problem but here it's an issue. Even on dry land, Mario runs like he has grease on his shoes. I fell into harmful water numerous times because Mario fell off of the ledge while running. I don't know it may be that I suck at this game (I only got 83 sunshine stars) but I just hate this game so much. Play Jak and Dakster the Precursor Legacy, the platforming is done very well in that game.
Rival Turf does have it's flaws but at the end of the day, it's still a fun romp; a hard one too. I do like this game better than Brawl Brothers and the Peace Keepers though.
In my opinion this trumps Mario Sunshine in every way. Even if this game is way too short and easy and there's not too much to do, it has an interesting personality and it's pretty fun. It feels like a childish version of Resident Evil except that Jill is more manly than Luigi. Aside from the game, I freakin hate Mario Sunshine. Worst First-Party Mario game ever.
Excellent review. To be honest, after seeing and witnessing all of the crappy Sonic games like Sonic Heroes, Sonic the Hedgehog next gen, and Sonic Unleashed, I'll be happy to dish out 1500 Wii points for a return to form for the hedgehog.
