@NintendoJunkie Very good Adam. Love your style. However according to some posts I am not qualified to judge art or criticize it.
Why? Well I'm fairly #hit at art. I do a very nice stick man according to my kids. Hey its all subjective right. If they do criticize it, then I can always make it a better stick man.
@Dualmask It's quite unexpected from a developer to be honest with you. I would think they were keen to get viewpoints from the demographic (current). Then taylor their much loved creations to that target audience. I don't quite get the talking down to people on an international website is going do many favours for your business. Up until that point - it was fair game. Belittling others based on qualifications and past experience isn't OK in my book. Not everyone has the same prospects - doesn't mean they should be snubbed out on a view they might have.
@Pandaman I like SoR but jeez this has gone a bit too far. Its a 90's side scrolling beat em up. I won't lose sleep if it doesn't fulfill expectations. Controversial arguments aside I don't agree with talking down. That's not on. There is quite a bit of that going on above.
@impurekind Hey that comment is a tad unfair on subscribers to the site. True not everyone is a gaming professional or design guru - they still have a right to an opinion.
The Switch was designed for on the move and under the telly. Hence the name - switch (between the two).
Now we have a lite version which really should come with a way of docking it to the TV. The fact they have done away with that option leaves it as an oversized handheld. Goes against the design ethos and well. . . . who is it being aimed at. Current switch owners?
As I say - I like it - but have a lot of reservations.
What I think they should have done - is make the dock some form of compute unit which enhances the graphics when the lite is docked. Docked - higher resolution, AA, 60 FPS. Undocked lower resolution/draw distance, 30 FPS, lower resolution (works fine on tiny screen).
They could of touted that as Switch II - instead we get a unit that's no longer filling any specific market.
It's a game peeps. Right I think there are strong points to both sides of the argument and being a 40 something retro and modern gamer (just please not so many buttons on the controller ).
I like the visuals as it is. I like them as they were. My view its just evolution now its been picked up by a third party. Had it not - I think the best we all could of hoped for was BoR. That's not really an option.
Hopefully it plays well. That's the most important aspect now.
@impurekid - you are entitled to an opinion and I respect that. I'm not having a go btw
As it is, I stand by what I say and think it looks very good.
I agree there could of been a re-visit to the original style but SEGA didn't want to realize it. They had their opportunities. Decades of them! If anyone is to blame, its not the current license holder it's SEGA themselves.
If you license something to someone you are giving them the rights to vision it how they see fit. There is no requirement for it to look the same as it once was. Sometimes I agree that's a bummer. I recall MASS EFFECT going through a number of transitions and one art form totally sucked. Thankfully they stuck with their original style. Still these things happen.
@impurekind Yes they could of gone that art style, but they chose the one they went with. Thousands complained at Zelda the Windwaker. Preferred more realistic graphics. They got that with Twilight princess.
Rapidly approaching 20 years later, Twilight hasn't fared too well. In fact it looks very dated. Windwaker on the hand looks as though it should be running on the switch.
Game styles change. Sometimes changes are a good thing - like the above.
You also have to consider this is now being targeted at a new generation. Many people whom have the switch weren't born when the MD/Genesis was doing the rounds. At the moment over styled graphics are the thing.
Ultimately I quite welcome the change in style. As do many others.
Nintendo only do this because they like to charge for the same damn dumps each time a new console iteration comes out. If they didn't they would sell us the ROM (as a one off) and allows to use the 'same' emulator they use for - said - console iteration(s).
To put it in to context, it would be like being reinvoiced for your car each time a new model revision comes out.
I question who the thieves are at times and before anyone gets of their horse I don't really see a few people playing snes9x once in a blue moon a major threat to the industry. Like I said - Nintendo have had their dollar several times over now with a lot of these releases. It's becoming unfair.
As for emulation - I'm all for it. I own a custom bartop arcade running hyperspin - I play it now and then. Do I feel guilty or breaking the law? No I feel nostalgic and that's a good thing.
Just two more years people and Nintendo will unlock that extra hidden, under-clocked 60 Mhz. It will take the switch to incredible performance increases at the cost of only 50 minute reduced battery time!
The difference here is that Sony has always used the reference to cross as far back as I can recall. Adding to that, other than the thumbstick and extra shoulder buttons the controller buttons have remained the same. Whereas this isn't true for nintendo which has seen many button revisions and lettering.
Give FFVIII some time. I found when I first tried it on release I couldn't get in to it. About 13 or so year ago (feeling old now) i played through with a friend (did use a guide but then we wanted to get through this, VII and IX before I moved further away). We had an absolute blast getting all the secrets and playing through.
FF games IMO will never be the same now they dropped the turn based approach. I've always felt there was room for both action rpg and turn and didn't need that evolution from one to the other.
As for all the other games this weekend above. Totally agree!
Clearly this is some form exercise device and why not. Will appeal to many just like Wii fit did.
Nintendo often create their own niche and if it increases sales of switch to a different demographic then great. This can only be a good thing.
I mean look at the switch lite. They are not replacing the switch rather selling you the same thing again and heck it’s working. I’d like one and I’m not even sure why.

I just reckon if you bought a snes title back on wii virtual console (or other ninty emulation enabled system) it should offer you a free download on switch.
Talk about money for old rope.
Backward compatibility appears to be a double edged sword. Yes you past system will be backwards compatible but you will pay it all over again.
As I see it there is no need for subscriptions or overly charged virtual titles. They made their money back in the day and have done many times over.
They should be priced at a cheap android or ios title now. 0.69p for example.
Its not like they are being remade. Its just emulated. They could license snes 9x if they wanted a helping hand. Heck Sony used an open source is psx mini.
With emulation in place whats the hold up releasing the ROMS.

It was the last time I checked. In other words - my view is based on what I've played over the years.
