Hotel Dusk was my first visual novel. Loved it so much. Played it at a time when there was so much uncertainty in my life. During the financial crisis, I sank a lot of brooding hours behind that miraculous dual screen, locked in my room. Those games really saved me.

The book, “Iwata Asks,” touches on the Nintendo workplace culture that had existed and the new culture he strove to promote. Very inspiring. I’m happy to learn that he made such a long-lasting impact on not only Nintendo’s hardware/software design but, more importantly, workplace welfare responsible for bringing those products to life.

No Mercy was the GOAT if you’re a WWE fan but the preceding game, WCW/NWO Revenge, was the best if you were a fan of the Turner brand, and it was the first of the AKI wrestling games to implement finishers that opponents actually sold on (prior to Revenge, wrestlers would jump back up after being hit by a finishing move).

Fire Pro Returns is also great and has actually usurped the AKI games for me. Didn’t like the game at first but once you get used to the engine and the insane customization there’s no going back. Seriously. Take a few days to learn it and to play with the customizations, then all other wrestling games will seem basic.

During the Great Recession we lost our home and I was in the throes of a severe depression compounded by a long fight with alcoholism. The Nintendo DS and games like Hotel Dusk, 999, and TWEWY pulled me from the brink. While those years were some of the hardest of my life, I will always look back on those games with the greatest of fondness for shining their intermittent light in that darkness.
