if the game sucks sure (define sucks though, maybe you won't know till you get to the heart of the game), if its difficult, no, the difficulty of games makes them compelling, obviously there is a sweet spot for difficulty but modern games fall far short of it, delayed gratification will always be more profound than cheaply dispensed endorphin hits
@Friendly I remember that rhetoric, of course, I never cared for it as I was having the time of my life in the Wii U days. Of course, that was due to the 3ds as well, when the Wii u software waned, the 3ds software increased, and vice versa, the year 2014. Makes me miss the hardware division.
I'll tell you what, while I find your optimism and contentment insufferable, you live up to your handle, guy.
@Friendly this page partially concerns the Wii U, which I very much enjoy to this day, and I don't frequent this site hardly at all anymore, nor do I play the switch anymore, nor will I play their console more than likely. As for what you said about definitive editions (for games I don't care about,) you are really demonstrating the very thing that makes me think that Nintendo will never have my interest again.
@Friendly arms feels like a mode in Nintendo land in terms of content, (a small exaggeration), labo while being very creative has very underwhelming software attached to it, three houses is incredibly cheap-looking, and is very lacking in terms of traditional FE gameplay; a game for all the shippers, I guess, Splatoon 2 added duelies, an umbrella, and salmon run to the original's grand formula, while its single player was worse, and the only new competitive mode (clam blitz) wasn't any good. (I played splatoon 2 for 220 hours, it doesn't offer anything substantial enough, that you wouldn't get playing the 1st.) 1-2 switch is a sham when compared to its party predecessors, Nintendo land, wii sports resort, even wii play motion and wii play. Add in the fact that there is no new retro title for the last 7 years, no new Mario kart, no new 2d mario (admittedly they were stale, but by no means bad), no warioware (the last being a compilation), no smash game that properly remembers the generation that preceded it, as the others did, no 3rd party exclusives like in the days of the wii (just late to the party ports, that are cheaper and better anywhere else), no return of an old franchise, such as pikmin, punchout, star fox, Kid icarus, f-zero, donkey kong country, etc, no new franchises either (cept for arms....great). Couple this with the fact that I don't think their flagship titles on the switch have been much of anything; sure botw and Odyssey are novel and flashy at first, but I don't there content is all that compelling (especially odyssey, botw could be argued that the new makes up for the old). As for Luigi's mansion 3, I didn't play it, cus i thought dark moon was very underwhelming, then there's link's awakening, which i cant really say anything good or bad about it. There's the lacklustre pokemon games, the grindy and disappointing octopath traveler, astral chain (people seem to like that one). Four years in, and that's how i see the switch, not to mention having terrible hardware issues, bad online (not free either anymore) no additional hardware perks, like StreetPass, miiverse, or backwards compatibility. I don't actually play the thing anymore, I guess my standards are too high; all those years playing much more compelling content from Nintendo.
@Friendly its more my concern that Nintendo sells these games at a premium, and pretends they are new, all the while their new game output is as slow as it has ever been, and the new games they have put out are often lackustre (pokemon, fire emblem three houses, splatoon 2, 1-2 switch labo, arms, Smash Ultimate to an extent). I have no interest in a company kept afloat by lazy ideas, that are then defended by an unimaginative fanbase.
@Varkster well the thing is it's not a masterpiece, and if it was, why then is it so easy to undermine that reality. A lot of the game's novelty comes from its deviation from the main series, which I can admit needed to be deviated from, but now that the deviation is done, a lot of Zelda fans (it seems like a lot anyhow) by comparing have re-evaluated the value of the older games, and find that those games have more going for them than botw.
I think Windwaker has a better open-world than breath of the wild, as does link to the past. Breath of the wild has really good level design, but they don't do anything with it.
@kobashi100 yet sadly, this uncreative practice has proved lucrative and therefore my little boat is swamped by the wake of the much bigger boat of those who are less frugal. As a result, I am not getting a Mario kart 9 because MK8 deluxe has not reached its market saturation point, and call me crazy but I think the reality of that game made Nintendo realize that even their sequels could be more of a 1.5 affair (Splatoon 2, and even Smash Ultimate [which released as a compilation game]).
@kingbk, its the price point, and since they're not doing anything to these games, their profit margins are super high, so financially it makes sense, but for the informed consumer its sheisty and uncreative. Moreover the quality and quantity of new games is not where it needs to be, and that is why people blame the switch ports, whether there is a direct correlation or not. Also, the Wii u and Wii were backwards compatible, as were all the portables, so the notion that these ports are exciting is dumb to an informed consumer, and apparently there are about 14 million(not that they are all informed) consumers who have eyes on Nintendo's greedy practice. Now include all the 3rd party ports that are either old, inferior, or late to the party that are also overpriced.
its easier to age up than age down (unless you're that one special individual). Its not the graphics, its the lack of meaningful challenge. Pokemon is too easy, Mario is too easy, zelda is too easy, metroid will be too easy. Fire emblem i heard is too easy. Yes there is dark souls, but thats not the same, I think game should default to being initially difficult, as opposed to optional difficulty, or boutique difficulty.
I mean there's no way that a list compiled by voting will be on point, but boy this list is silly. Earthbound may not be an incredible "game" but I think it has the status of literature. So the fact that Yoshi's Island, Diddy Kong quest, and Super Mario RPG are above it is super disconcerting. Yoshi's island in particular is baffling because its not the worst game, but it has rotten elements and the fact that its sequels codified those elements makes those elements stand out more.
@SKTTR I am happy that you brought up the Wii U version of Botw that never was. The gamepad would've made it one of the most functional Open world UI's ever.
@Sakiya Game and Wario is surprisingly expensive on ebay, as for Yoshi's wooly world, I don't think its good feel's best game by any means, but I suppose it is a good follow up to Yoshi's Island (much easier though)
@Sakiya get Xenoblade X, Nintendo land, Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3 (better than the switch version) Rayman legends, The Zelda Ports (particularly Windwaker) Nes Remix, Affordable Space adventures, Runbow, Super Mario 3d world, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, and whatever else, if you haven't already, (Wii U version of these games are much cheaper.)
I'll take the Wii U over the switch any day; Paired with the 3ds, it was a great generation. If they hadn't removed the Wii U gamepad functionality from Breath of the world, it would've been the definitive version (for home play anyhow.)
@Nintendo_Thumb breath of the wild while certainly not a favourite of mine, falls into that category, all of retros offerings safe for Metroid Prime 2, every 3d mario game safe for odyssey, and most of the 2d mario games. Outside of some exceptions, the zelda franchise, smash bros melee, smash bros brawl smash bros 3ds, warioware, Wii sports resort, Nintendo Land, Pikmin 3, Mario Kart 8, Double dash, Mario kart 64, diddy kong racing, Red steel 2, Rabbids go home, No more heroes (specifically the 1st one), Halo 3, Wolfenstein New Order, Rise of the tomb raider, Shovel Knight, Ori and the blind forest, affordable space adventures, Runbow, Super Metroid, Super Castlevania, Earthbound, Resident evil 4, Mega man 2, Mega man 4, mega man 3, Punchout, Punchout Wii,
If I bought the kirby fighters 2, id probably have some fun, but not 20 dollars worth of fun, it would feel remiscent of my purchase of arms which was 80 dollars(Canadian), and i still feel burned by that purchase, which is probably why I buy older titles second hand now. Got sunshine for 30 dollars, no more heroes for 20, a wii for 50 bucks, thousand year door for 30, excite truck for 7 dollars, epic yarn for 20. When you can afford one switch game a month, its all opportunity cost.
For xbox and ps4, i think their 1st party exclusives are fairly priced, despite some dlc nonsense, and i don't care for their games, but their pricing is fair.
@Nintendo_Thumb I like video games that are worth liking, and I pay for games that justify their own price. Nintendo used to have such titles, now they do not. I have good taste, and I purchase games that are ambitious, creative, and well put together. This game has none of those qualities, so I'll toss stones at it.
@Nintendo_Thumb I do think Nintendo is terrible as a matter of fact. I'm sure by the end of the switch's life cycle they will have accumulated enough original titles to make the machine worth it, but at this present time, their original 1st party library is garbage. In terms of 3rd party support, its a lot of ports, and repackaged products that are readily available elsewhere, and for better prices. There are also indie games, which the switch does have a good supply of, but I don't put much stock in the majority of independent titles.
Really the fault of Nintendo's lackluster development is as much on the consumers as it is on Nintendo, since at the end of the day it's the consumers that are defending nothing titles like this game. The fact that boxboy was five dollars and this is 20 is laughable,(I'm aware that boxboy is minimalist in its assets). Also this other game looks really familiar:
@Kirby_Girl @NintendoArchive sure looked like it was running that engine, and all the new content looked awfully familiar. also, no one is going to be playing a shallow game for very long, so its online will be a ghost town in no time unless other rabid fans like you exist. enjoy your purchase
@sanderev no, reused assets don't need to be created again, especially if they're already from an HD game (Kirby Star allies), as far programming, most of that is being reused as well. every other game out there is now in HD and they're still expected to have meaningful content in addition to they're shiny look.
@Nintendo_Thumb I recall some years back, (4 or 5) what 20 dollars could buy you, and it was a lot better than this game. Nintendo has been overcharging on everything this generation: controllers, ports, dlc, ac adapters. As for your dig on my lack of funds, I'm just better with money than you are.
@sanderev a story mode that is clearly just vs battles with AI. HD assets that are more than likely being reused, and I guess it has nintendo's bad online. Yay? Buy it if you want, but it won't do well, more than likely, because its overpriced and shallow (more than likely). whatever it costs where you live, the dlc for triple deluxe was 5-7 canadian dollars.
@NintendoByNature No I'm not, its a collection of great games, but its not a great collection of great games. It's certainly worth the money, but I own all these games already.
@damien33ad I think the game is a 6.5 or 7 (If 5 meant average). I think a difficulty setting is far less elegant than what Nintendo did in the past where they actively provided avenues of difficulty that were interwoven gracefully within levels. I don't think there's any expert content in Odyssey(unless you want to count those bounding ball races.) On the surface, it may not have any problems but at its core, its a game with basic level design that fails to make good on Mario's extensive move set. The game distracts from this persistent problem with genial if not one-dimensional asides(the capture mechanic) as well as some flashiness. I enjoyed the game very much initially, to the point that I figured it was probably the best Mario game, but I was wrong. I'll take a game like Sunshine over Odyssey because while it has some easily perceived flaws, at its core it's very ambitious in its design and has truly rewarding, and challenging gameplay. I'm not trying to bite your head off, but I don't think Odyssey's problems would be fixed with a difficulty toggle.
