Re: Video: The State Of Nintendo Switch Two Years After Its Release

Hoho

@TheAwesomeBowser my right shoulder button is broken, my left stick has a wonder, my right joycon, has trouble syncing up now and this is all after sending it in to get fixed. I could blame my nephews but they haven’t played it that much: it’s the quality of the make.
As for its stellar games; Mario odyssey and breath of the Wild string you along with gameplay promoting instant gratification over delayed gratification which in my mind makes them dull baby games made for babies, or the parent of the baby who has limited time.
As for the rest of its stellar games. They’re either known quantities(Mario kart 8, bayonetta, captain toad, etc) or barebones sequels(Splatoon 2, kirby, Mario tennis)

For the first half of this year, the only notable release is yoshi which only Appeals to the kirby sort of demographic. You have to wait till summer for games to come out.

I’d swap my switch for a Wii u

Re: The Award-Winning Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice Is Switch-Bound This Spring

Hoho

@ThanosReXXX I have a fairly good recollection of how well the average RPG sells. They sell enough to keep the developers and publishers in business, that’s about it.

Rune factory 4, 0.7 million, Octopath 1.08 (I believe), Bravely default 1.14, bravely second, half that. Etrian odyssey 1.5 million (as of 2016) combined sales of series. Xenoblade 2, 1.5 million give or take, Odin sphere, and I am setsuna, couldn’t find sales figures so.....yeah. Fire Emblem awakening, 2-2.5 million, fates is in that ball park too. Shin Megami Tensei series in all its many iterations: around 8 million. Persona 5: 2.2 million. This is all a rough estimate mind you. Point is prospering and lingering are not the same. You can dispute the metrics of success if want but those are the numbers as I could find them.

If I wanted to be churlish, I might suggest that the fan base Venn diagram for these series is very tight. Also I’ll confirm your suspicion. I do in fact utterly hate JRPG style games; Earthbound, Fire Emblem and Xenoblade X notwithstanding. Do the same boring UI laden battle thing 10,000 times and every now and then the hoky story progresses maybe the scenery changes, or perhaps a number gets bigger. Haven’t played them all, don’t want to.

I didn’t hate this direct, unlike every 2018 presentation; thus I assumed every other vocal Nintendo fan would think its the most amazing thing ever.

The direct was a flood of Double A efforts, book ended by two actual Nintendo 1st party announcements.

Moreover unless you can tolerate Yoshi’s plodding movement and baby easy difficulty(I am awful at video games by the way). You have to wait till summer for the new offerings, though 2019 looks altogether good thus far.

If you’re one the 2-3 million(my meagre estimate) folks that like Eastern style games, the direct was amazing. if you’re everyone else that like Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games or like western style games. You get old or inferior yet portable versions of games, Mario maker, Yoshi and Zelda.

Moving beyond the direct, my main gripe with Nintendo is that though handheld and console development has consolidated under the switch, I’ve yet to see it have an impact on their productivity. There are so many teams and studios that are seemingly doing nothing. Their overall output should be far better.

You can have the last word if you desire friend, though I’d prefer if your tell me I’m outright wrong rather than remind that I exist in the confines of my own opinion.

P.S to your P.S

I’ve had no qualms with your conduct and was implying nothing.

God bless

Re: The Award-Winning Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice Is Switch-Bound This Spring

Hoho

@Mrtoad true, all games are done on a budget, even so, there are certain games “done on a budget.”

Consider the phrase “we’re on a budget”; the explicit notion is that you need to be careful with your money, but there also exists within the statement, an implicit that there is no money.

Apply example to my comment above and there should be no confusion.

Re: The Award-Winning Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice Is Switch-Bound This Spring

Hoho

@ThanosReXXX if a game is niche, then it’s budget is adjusted accordingly. RPG factory or whatever they’re called (Square Enix owned) makes niche games, hence cheaply made, one of if not platinums best selling developed games, Nier automata was also made on a budget. I’ll assume the rest of their games are probably as well.

But this is all semantics.

My point is my middling opinion of this direct isn’t just my opinion. Otherwise the international audience would buy JRPGs and other eastern games. A few examples aside (Final Fantasy, Dragon quest in japan, monster Hunter world) they don’t

Re: The Award-Winning Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice Is Switch-Bound This Spring

Hoho

@sanderev if u didn’t play them originally, then perhaps they lack the power of resonance.

Link’s awakening is an amazing game and the pure essence of Zelda(didn’t touch it till I was 21 mind you) but man that art style looks like [removed], but also it looks cute and fascinating , I can almost guarantee that DX will remain the definitive.

I’ll watch the trailer again, and withhold my full judgement

Re: The Award-Winning Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice Is Switch-Bound This Spring

Hoho

@ThanosReXXX I won’t quibble about it being “solid”. All the same however, many of these titles shown are niche and eastern, that new platinum won’t break 2 million(Octopath didn’t), fire Emblem is likely the only Japanese style game that will achieve greater success internationally. As for all those ports, I’d hazard that 95% of the people talking on this here website have the means to play them(at a heavy discount) as for the rest of the switch audience: same vibe.

That new Zelda...I’ll watch the trailer again but oh boy, wow!!!

Re: The Award-Winning Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice Is Switch-Bound This Spring

Hoho

@sanderev super Mario maker 2 is cool, and not a port, fire Emblem looks interesting (comparatively). Arch chain(?) looks like they put effort into it. Tetris Royale also cool. I had every single emotional reaction to link’s awakening, glad, mad, sad....plad? Jury’s out on that one. Otherwise a lot of late arrivals and Japanese double AA games. I’m less disappointed than I imagined, but ehhh

Re: Talking Point: How Do You Feel About The Metroid Prime 4 Delay?

Hoho

@purpleibby Wii u Vc mmmm.........

Although I take umbrage with you calling the switch a wii u port machine, that’s just patently false. Here’s proof:

Donkey Kong TF
Super Deluxe Mario is U
Captain Toad
Mk 8 DX
Pokken DX
Hyrule Warriors

Let’s not forget the 3rd parties new games

Skyrim
Wolfenstein 2
Doom
Monster Hunter Generations ultimate
Mega man legacy 1 and 2
Resident Evil revelations
Okami
Ray man legends
Child of light
L.A Noire
LEGO city Undercover

All new games, and then there’s indies, the most creative of all.

Shovel knight
Fast RMX
Xeodrifter
Mutant Mudds
Velocity 2X
World of Goo
Runbow
Stick it to the man
Steam world dig
Etc.

All new games, there was the occasional port such as Smash ultimate but that’s okay.

You owe all the developers who made these new games an apology

Re: Talking Point: How Do You Feel About The Metroid Prime 4 Delay?

Hoho

@Lemmy_the_Koopa maybe that’s true; one can hope. Even so, games are overdue at this point, so I don’t believe my tone should be ecstatic or grateful when these do arrive.

I don’t disagree with Nintendo’s decision to scrap what they had, I’m irked by the mishandling of development time.

Re: Talking Point: How Do You Feel About The Metroid Prime 4 Delay?

Hoho

@Lemmy_the_Koopa going on 6 years since pikmin 3, 5 years since retro’s last offering, 6 years since the last 2D Mario, (going on 4 since super Mario maker), 3 years since next levels last offering(federation force), 6 years since animal crossing, 4 1/2 years since the last Mario kart with no new announcement. Going on 3 years since the last paper Mario(which was kinda rushed and middling). I’m probably forgetting others. Something is out of sync is my point.

Re: Talking Point: How Do You Feel About The Metroid Prime 4 Delay?

Hoho

@DayOfLavos it’s a really good thing that Nintendo wasted development resources and has nothing to show for it? Moreover one of their best studios is now preoccupied with the mess meaning they might be dormant for another 3-4 years on top of their already five year quiet period. It appears once again that Nintendo has issues regarding consistency in their release calendars

Re: Review: Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes - A Stylish Return For The Otaku Hitman

Hoho

@Abes3 I don’t really concern myself with scores all that much anymore. What bothers me about reviews is that your initial impression rarely holds up and therefore I believe reviewers should be suspicious of themselves and thus in my perfect world, the same reviewer should revisit their reviews a year or so after, and it should all be in writing.

As someone super lenient on the aforementioned breath of the Wild, my views have changed for the worse in the last couple years. It’s a great game but I regard it as more shallow enjoyment than its predecessors. Dido for Mario Odyssey compared to the others.

Re: Review: Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes - A Stylish Return For The Otaku Hitman

Hoho

@Quarth that’s probably because Nintendo life reviews smaller games that other sites don’t review: games of more dubious quality. To my mind at least, they review hohum Nintendo releases with too much leniency. Smash ultimate for instance is not a 10/10. Review scores aside, I consider their reviews to be inoffensive but hardly riveting or deep cutting.
