Re: Federal Government Is Officially Investigating Nintendo For Possible Patent Infringement

FrankJaeger

I don't know how to feel about this.
On one hand, despite actually having valid patents (in regards to the terrible patent system at least), this is clearly a cash grab by Gamevice. And legal or no, cash grabs are scummy and feel gross.

On the other hand, I bought a Gamevice for my phone a couple months ago, and it's actually pretty nice. Decent face buttons and d-pad, actually holds my phone securely, connects via USB rather than Bluetooth, has a full functioning USB and headphone jack passthrough-- it's LEAGUES ahead of almost all other smartphone gaming accessories. Like most Android controllers truly suck; they're flimsy, have terrible buttons, and use pretty unreliable Bluetooth.

So I'm really torn. Gamevice is being really scummy, but their current product is very good and I would like it to succeed. It's a shame they're doing this and tarnishing any good will they might have built up. I also like my Switch, and wish that both products could co-exist in peace.

TL;DR this is why we can't have nice things.

Re: Looks Like The SNES Classic Mini Is Just As Hackable As The NES Classic Mini

FrankJaeger

@marnelljm I understand your concern, and you're absolutely right-- there are trillion emulation options out there, many cheaper than a SNES Classic. But people's curiosity cannot be stopped, and in the case of NES Mini, it's absurdly safe-- Hakchi2 can restore the beast to true 100% stock at any minute. Cause on the inside, it's basically just another brand of Raspberry Pi. Just a cheap Linux computer.

Still, I think people should use a PC or a Raspberry Pi or something. Save the money, and enjoy the illusion of a tiny SNES. But I will always respect curiosity if people go that way. And I'd certainly wait until people triple check that the SNES Mini is in fact the same as the NES Mini. Can never be too careful, even if you are curious.

Re: Looks Like The SNES Classic Mini Is Just As Hackable As The NES Classic Mini

FrankJaeger

@World man I thought the same thing, it was a bit of work when I first set mine up, but my housemate bought one very recently and the Retropie team has really put a lot of effort into making it SHOCKINGLY stupid proof in the past few months. It took him like 15 minutes to get it up and running. The image flashing program they link to even auto-detects your MicroSD card now, so you barely need to understand your PC, let alone the Raspberry Pi! And if you're just doing SNES, you don't need to overclock or heatsink. Anything more and you're right though

Don't get me wrong, you absolutely have a point, it's still a bit of effort, but having both made a Retropie and played around with Hakchi2, the barrier to entry for both is surprisingly similar, and surprisingly low.

The future is crazy

Re: Looks Like The SNES Classic Mini Is Just As Hackable As The NES Classic Mini

FrankJaeger

@Rhaoulos because you don't damage it, as the article says it's completely safe and reversible. I have a Pi, but just out of curiosity I tried it on my NES Mini and it works like a charm. It really is very slick and easy, and when I was done I restored it to 100% stock no muss no fuss.

It's actually a little shocking. Usually these things are more locked down.

@MooX The hack is already absurdly safe and powerful (on NES Mini). Like 2 clicks to get back to 100% stock. I'd still really recommend a Raspberry Pi, but it's impressive how nice ClusterM made the whole experience!

@BezBot On the NES Mini at least, there's very little risk. However, I'd still recommend getting a Raspberry Pi. It's fun and much cheaper. I just do hope people own the games they play

Re: Soapbox: Playing Super Mario Sunshine Today Painfully Illustrates Nintendo's 3D Evolution

FrankJaeger

Woah. I don't know what I'm missing, but my favorite thing about Sunshine was the absurd amount of precise control I felt I had over Mario at all times (not camera, mind you, it's problematic-- specifically control over Mario). Like you can turn on a dime, wall jumps are amazing precise... The Secrets in Sunshine always stood out as insane masterworks of precision 3D platforming to me.

What am I missing that you discovered? Or vice versa? I wouldn't say Sunshine is the best Mario, but it's FAR from the worst. Heck, I hate to say it since I love the beast, but having replayed both recently it's certainly aged better than Super Mario 64...

Re: Preview: Going Back to SR-388 in Metroid: Samus Returns

FrankJaeger

@Yomerodes Gods no, I don't want anyone to get fired! It's just weird when websites that cover all sorts of games get this stuff right, and when a Nintendo-focused site gets it wrong.

Like... Nintendo is literally all you write about. This is one of Nintendo's bigger franchises. It always outlines the planet a Metroid game is on. And for the 2D Metroids, there's only 2 planets to choose from.

It's just really weird. Like it makes it seem like they assigned a staffer who's not actually familiar with the franchise, when I would hope there's at least one writer for this website who is familiar with the franchise. Cause, again, it's a Nintendo-focused site.

Re: Series Producer Yoshio Sakamoto Is Interested In Making Another 2D Metroid

FrankJaeger

@Kalmaro they are making Switch games, hence Metroid Prime 4. The question is just when is it most cost effective to STOP making 3DS games, and that point hasn't been reached... yet. It will be reached soon enough, the Switch is selling great, they just need to make more of them, literally. The 3DS will die soon, the Switch install base will reach a very good volume quite quickly at this rate... But we're not there yet. Close, but not there yet.

It's inconvenient if all you want is new Switch games, but Nintendo's strategy of "build the Switch install base by releasing games at a steady rhythm while covering losses by selling 3DSs, 3DS games and amiibo until the Switch install base is huge" seems to be working quite well for them. Switch numbers are growing fast and furiously, while 3DS games are still selling at a tidy profit. Just let the trend continue. 100% of their focus will be on the Switch soon enough.

Until then, I'm appreciative of a new Metroid. I like my Switch, but I also like me 3DS.

Addendum: it was their plan to do the same thing with the GBA and DS, but the DS took off like wildfire and was much easier to make than the Switch is, so they were able to accelerate the process. Switch's are harder to make, with more competitive parts, so it will take longer, but I can guarantee we'll get there. We're just not financially there yet.

Re: Series Producer Yoshio Sakamoto Is Interested In Making Another 2D Metroid

FrankJaeger

@Kalmaro that's a really nice thought, it really is... But that's not how capitalism and investors work, at all. It has the potential to make more money on 3DS, so it goes on 3DS. End of story. I don't really agree with it in this context or any other... But capitalism. Corporations are not our friends.

Plus, the game likely started heavy development before the Switch SDKs were even remotely finalized, and the two systems could not be more different in terms of hardware. Code is hard-- I make stupid websites for a living, and even that's hard across platforms.

Edit: autocorrect is dumb

Re: Series Producer Yoshio Sakamoto Is Interested In Making Another 2D Metroid

FrankJaeger

@SLIGEACH_EIRE I've noticed you say... Lots of times, I guess... That you don't own a 3DS, yet you seem to be a pretty big and super knowledgeable Nintendo fan (you send in tips a lot right?). Legitimate question, cause as I've said you seem like a real smart dude: Why is that? The common thread is that the 3DS' library is really vast and good, and my personal experience would back that up. Just really don't like handhelds?

Also, kudos on the Legacy Edition. As a filthy American who's favorite franchise is Metroid, I'm exceedingly jelly.

Edit: mispelling

Re: Editorial: In Praise of the Smaller New Nintendo 3DS - The Best 3DS*

FrankJaeger

I agree with this article pretty wholeheartedly. It helps I also have small hands (no politics for me lol). I have a New 3DS and XL, and I prefer the smaller unit. Its build quality seems better overall, it looks MUCH better and has more personality... But the biggest kicker for me is the pixel density. 3DS games look gross stretched out on the big screen. Games look MUCH cleaner and more natural on a smaller screen. Y'know, a screen close in size to what the system was originally designed for.

Like, it's a big difference IMO. Compare Pokemon or any of the Zeldas across the two models... The visuals are just better and sharper on the smaller screen, straight up.

Re: Review: Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition (Switch eShop)

FrankJaeger

@King_Johobo I'm in a somewhat similar boat. I HAVE played Minecraft, on PC and Xbox 360, and like it very much as a survival game. I would very much like to get the Switch version to take advantage of the bigger worlds, Nintendo content and portable nature, but buying the Switch itself + BotW SE kind of drained my responsible fun funds. I'd really like to get MK8 Deluxe, I am Setsuna and Fast RMX as well.

Silver lining is that they're not going anywhere, I suppose.

Re: Review: Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition (Switch eShop)

FrankJaeger

@LinkToTheFuture yes, it can absolutely be played solo. I mostly play solo or with 1 other person.

It's a fun game, deserves the hype. Lots to do, and it's a very deep game with lots of mechanics. It does require some "self-drive"-- there are overall objectives, but they're vague, so you're going to need to set goals for yourself, but if you're into that I think it's a blast. Reminds me of Skyrim or Breath of the Wild, but with weird graphics. But just as much depth, IMO.

Never really understood the "I'm an adult, what's the point of Minecraft?" argument. I'm a grown man, and my favorite series are Dark Souls and Metroid, yet I can totally get down on some Minecraft. It's a fun, well made game.

Re: Virtual Console Will Not Be Ready For Nintendo Switch Launch

FrankJaeger

@PlywoodStick that's dope. All of that is dope. Mine's at 2.7 million. I'm glad to see someone with a similar story to mine!

Most of ol' Aqua's buttons held together, except Smash destroyed the circle pad. I ended up trying my hardest to get a Majora's Mask edition n3DS XL, to no avail; I got there at 6AM, and was beaten out by the 4AM group I ended up getting a plain black New 3DS XL so I could give Ol' Aqua to my girlfriend so she could get her Pokemon fix. I REALLY didn't like the larger size though (no longer pocketable), so I ended up getting a Pokemon 20th Anniversary edition New 3DS. I LOVE that thing. The perfect size. My only complain is the colors on the TN display, so if you do that mod PLEASE share your experience, as it's a mod I'm VERY interested in myself. I'm tired of the washed-out yellowness. Also, if you find a decent brand of twisty stylus, please share that as well. I had an AMAZING one that got me through Metroid Prime: Hunters, but after 100hours of Kid Icarus: Uprising, the tip came off >.<

The black New 3DS become a tinkering toy as no friends wanted to buy it; it's sitting with homebrew, but doesn't get a lot of use because I (mostly) prefer physical cartridges, so even with homebrew it doesn't offer much that my main n3DS or GBA Micro can't offer. I take too much pride out of physically owning my games (to the pleasure of Nintendo's wallet, I'm sure).

My girlfriend promptly lost Ol' Aqua, which was actually really heartbreaking... I now have two Circle Pad Pros with no purpose in life.

Do you like the size of the regular New 3DS? It's the most perfectly proportioned console for my hands, IMO. I like using the D-Pad now, which is so pleasant for Super Metroid / Super Mario World! I'm jealous of the black color, but I love love LOVE my Blastoise faceplate. I haven't decided if I'll mod it...

Re: Virtual Console Will Not Be Ready For Nintendo Switch Launch

FrankJaeger

@Yorumi @PlywoodStick fun semi-related story... So as you both well know, for those who don't, Nintendo announced they were price-cutting the 3DS and giving all those who registered their systems before the price drop access to the Ambassador Program. The Ambassador Program got you ten free NES VC games, and ten exclusive GBA VC games.
Well, I read a rumour online at the time that some rural Walmarts had/were going to accidentally apply the price drop early. So if you were fast and lucky, you could snag a significantly cheaper 3DS and still register for the Ambassador Program.
Wouldn't you know it, I lived in a VERY rural area at the time.
And wouldn't you know it, but our primary store was a (pretty trashy) Walmart.
And wouldn't you know it, they had a SINGLE Aqua Blue 3DS on sale. Freshly tagged at the price drop one day early.

I ended up walking away that day with that 3DS at the cheaper price ($180 I think?), registered for the Ambassador Program AND a free used copy of OoT3D on promotion.

It was an amazing day. It gave me a cheap 3DS full of good games when the 3DS' library (and my wallet) was still so very sparse, started my love affair with the 3DS, and completely reinvigorated my love of Nintendo after the Wii and DS (which I just didn't like very much, sans the Wii VC. Sorry DS, not sorry Wii). Since then my 3DS has been my favorite system by a huge margin, for old games and new.

Just a fun memory. It's nice when things fall into place like that

Re: Virtual Console Will Not Be Ready For Nintendo Switch Launch

FrankJaeger

@JaxonH no problem at all. I'm not trying to be that dude online-- your opinions are 100% valid and important.

I find it saddening, but I'm sure the majority who were going to pre order are already locked in. The VC has been very successful-- but of course the majority of fans are going to be more interested in new games. I'm just personally no longer very hyped for March 3rd

Metroid Prime 1 & 2, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine, F-Zero GX, Melee, FE: PoR & RD, original WW, original TP, Four Swords Adventure and my favorite SNES and GBA games, all officially portable on a nice 720p screen... The idea just drives me up the wall. I wantses itssss. Those three systems hold up just so well, IMO. Good pixel art is timeless when paired with good mechanics (here's to you, Shovel Knight!), and the GC really nailed beautiful, simple, stylized 3D.

Plus, apparently Horizon: Zero Dawn is very very good, which hampers my BotW hype :/

Edit: and Binding of Isaac had been delayed a bit! Man!

Re: Virtual Console Will Not Be Ready For Nintendo Switch Launch

FrankJaeger

@westman98 I get what you mean, I doubt many of them care. But I have no doubt some people were primarily excited about the Switch due to the possibility of GC (and other) VC. When that rumor broke, it got a ton of traction. Plus, the Melee community exists.

Personally, I'd say I was equally excited about Zelda, Mario and GC (and SNES on a really nice portable screen) VC. Mario and VC are now delayed. That's 2 out of 3 things I was hyped for delayed.

Re: Virtual Console Will Not Be Ready For Nintendo Switch Launch

FrankJaeger

@JaxonH wasn't attacking you dude. Wasn't even really trying to convince YOU specifically of anything. Just using your post as a point of conversation to point out that this is a big deal as there's a lot of people eager and willing to pay money, and people saying "this is not a big deal" aren't really looking at the big picture.

I want GC VC games too. Like a lot. Like more than I really want any of the new games announced.

Re: Virtual Console Will Not Be Ready For Nintendo Switch Launch

FrankJaeger

@timson72 with all due respect, that's exactly the problem. Consumers are looking at unfinished products and still dropping massive loads of money for them day one. That tells the companies they can get away with it. The people feeding the beast then turn around and complain about the beast.
I bought a PS4 used over a year after launch, and I still feel overwhelmingly mixed about it. Consumers should be skeptical.

Re: Virtual Console Will Not Be Ready For Nintendo Switch Launch

FrankJaeger

@JaxonH that's fine... But a lot of people DO play 20 year old games really regularly. Like a lot a lot. And we all know how to use emulators-- we're just willing to buy them again. "Just"! You realize how nuts that is? This is a LARGE consumer base willing to pay for something that BOTH SIDES know they could get for free! Yet they're willing to pay! But Nintendo won't offer the purchase! Again, exhibit A: the NES Mini. Also just the success of the VC overall. This is an ENORMOUS missed opportunity.

Re: Virtual Console Will Not Be Ready For Nintendo Switch Launch

FrankJaeger

@timson72 I'd agree with that, without the "TBF", cause none of this has been fair or professional. But you're right. The generation, in my opinion, has been an absolute dumpster fire. I have a PS4, and sure I like some of the games, but the device is terrible. The controllers fall apart, the user interface is clumsy and terrible, PSN sucks A LOT, and the games didn't really start getting good until a year ago-- 2.5 years into the console's lifespan! And most PC ports are somehow broken nowadays. After using a Xbox 360 and 3DS as my main devices (and being treated really well by them) for a long time, along with everything that came before that, the current generation of consoles has just been nightmarish in my opinion. And that's not excusable. Nintendo was supposed to be better than that. In my opinion the Wii U was-- I liked it's interface and games. Its marketing was just trash

Re: Virtual Console Will Not Be Ready For Nintendo Switch Launch

FrankJaeger

@PlywoodStick Good to see you friend. Your NES Mini point is absolutely on the nose. To anyone saying this isn't a big deal-- how could this not be a big deal when the NES Mini is STILL making headlines left and right because people STILL want it so badly yet STILL cannot get it? That machine is basically a small VC. There's a large demand for this service.

Now they're dealing with a software-only environment, and they still can't meet demand. This is not a small deal. This is not negligible.

I'm not saying this a surefire sign that the Switch will fail-- but people need to get their head out of the clouds. Realistically, this is a bad sign, and realistically, this is just one of several bad signs that have cropped up.

That's not good.

Re: Virtual Console Will Not Be Ready For Nintendo Switch Launch

FrankJaeger

@Crono1973 that would make it even worse. Whether a business failure or a technical failure, this is utterly, truly pathetic. I just have zero sympathy left for them at this point. And I want to have some. But I well and truly don't. I truly believe Nintendo has set themselves up for a solid possibility of complete failure.

Re: Virtual Console Will Not Be Ready For Nintendo Switch Launch

FrankJaeger

Wow. Wow.
For me, this is a really big deal. A week before launch, and finally, ironically, my opinion has actually been shaken. This is ABSURD. I'm about to pay $300 for an unfinished console.
I'm a big time retro gamer, and a game collector. Nintendo knows a lot of their core market is like me. The Virtual Console is one of the main selling points of Nintendo machines for me. BUT BEYOND THAT, this is just insulting in general. You couldn't get a couple emulators running on a Tegra device?

I never thought I'd say this... This is such an about face for me, I'm such a fanboy... But the Switch finally, to me, looks like a joke. Nintendo cannot get away with blundering around forever. I have basically zero confidence in the system at this point.

And I was SO EXCITED. Grah.....

Re: Monster Hunter XX (Double Cross) Will Have Sailor Moon Crossover DLC

FrankJaeger

Didn't actually like Generations very much. Felt like a hastily made rehash of previous Monster Hunters to me, and the lack of a real story actually hurt it for me. Monster Hunter is NOT really about the story, BUT it's a good hook to keep people (like myself) motivated to push through the grindy and boring early game until you're ready to play online. It's almost like an MMO in that way. And the last two games' stories were definitely serviceable. 3 Ultimate and 4 Ultimate were great, but Generations just didn't do it for me. Couldn't really care less about a Generations X/Ultimate, and I'm usually a 3DS fanboi. I just don't really think Monster Hunter should be a "yearly release" game. It suffers for it, imo. Stories should release West though.

Re: Hackers Apparently Add Additional Games to NES Mini

FrankJaeger

@PlywoodStick that was my next question, it still functions? That is just nuts dude. I totally believe you, I'm just in awe talking to someone who actually HAS one of those. That's like the holy grail of SNES carts, that makes Terranigma look like chump change. For the good of all of us, keep that baby safe.

Re: Hackers Apparently Add Additional Games to NES Mini

FrankJaeger

@Pete41608 well... Can't lie, you got me lol. I've been on Reddit for too long, and you can't trust anyone around there. But well played sir, you got me.
@PlywoodStick the time has come!

http://imgur.com/a/wWNT3
Edit: forgot photos
http://m.imgur.com/a/KT124

I had household things to attend to, so this doesn't include any Microsoft/Sony stuff really besides some PS2 games, and I didn't want to dig out my GBA game boxes, but about half the GBA games do have their boxes still. I took screenshots of my digital 3DS library, but I can't find a tiny screwdriver to take off my back panel and get the SD card lol. Sometime soon, I'd love to actually have full photographs of it all. It's no museum piece by any means (too few NES games), but I love (almost) every game shown here and I'm proud of 'em all. Game collecting is fun!

Re: Hackers Apparently Add Additional Games to NES Mini

FrankJaeger

@PlywoodStick you make good points sir. That's a fine quote.

I've got a commute ahead of me, then I'll lay everything out and take pictures. It's sweet! I love game collecting! Just take it slow and don't kill your wallet, as a wise redditor once told me. It helps that I've managed to hold onto most of my rarities over the years when they were bought as just plain old new releases. Either way, pictures forthcoming in a few hours.

Re: Hackers Apparently Add Additional Games to NES Mini

FrankJaeger

@pete41608 I am not a pirate, that's what my entire post is about. I am at work right now (you're welcome, I have a job.) but I will HAPPILY post a photo of my collection, because I'm proud and it's a #@$& fine collection. I also adore Nintendo / their EAD devs, and desperately want them to succeed so I can keep buying their games. I play games I own and love. And if I'm allowed to play with my games, then I'm allowed to play with my consoles.

Your ignorant post exemplifies exactly what I'm talking about. People can't separate curiousity and the desire to tinker and discover from malicious intent. More so, it seems like people don't WANT to, either because they can't conceive of it, or they just like the feeling of thinking they have the moral high ground. That's absurd. How do you think developers get good at their jobs? They tinker and discover. The people who make the games you love weren't born with the skillsets they use to make those games. They studied, they tinkered, they broke things, then they got good.

Re: Hackers Apparently Add Additional Games to NES Mini

FrankJaeger

@ECMIM I get that... Sigh. Sad as it may be, I get that. But Nintendo fans, of all the ostracized fans out there, would hopefully have a little empathy for being ostracized for something you like. But not so much, because people.
It's just... How do people think games were MADE? Like Nintendo just came up with the NES one day, complete developers manual and all? Why does Super Mario Bros. 3 look so much better than the original? Because developers experimented, and pushed boundaries, and tried to figure out what they could do in a limited space! That's what developers do! They develop, regardless if they have a payroll from Nintendo! Cause shocker, getting hired by Nintendo is REALLY HARD!

I know, I'm ranting. I'm sorry. The disconnect between average gamers and gamers who like to tinker is just mind boggling to me, and Nintendo makes it worse sometimes. I own... 5 copies of Ocarina of Time now, I think? It's an amazing game, but that... that's not necessary. And I don't know how many copies of my SNES games I've had to rebuy at this point. There's a reason people are seeking alternatives...

Which brings me to my next point, NL and emulators. You yourself are seeking alternatives, what with all the Hyperlink products and vague mentions of emulation spotted here and there. You don't get to have your cake and eat it too. You don't get to talk knowledgeably about the emulation inconsistencies in 3rd party reproduction consoles and then act like going to a subreddit and looking at the pastebin link AT THE TOP is "diving into the murky world of links". That's... That's a subreddit. Literally one of the most common things on the internet at this point.

I understand this site is probably trying to maintain good relations with Nintendo while also catering to a retro Nintendo crowd, but... Come on. Sometimes you guys pretend to walk the line, sometimes you don't, and no matter what it's confusing.

Re: Hackers Apparently Add Additional Games to NES Mini

FrankJaeger

@Kroko the device seems to be working just fine, I'm not sure where "destroyed" comes into the picture.
Honestly, the amount of hate for hacks/mods/custom things from NL, its viewers and its staff confounds me. We're all Nintendo fans. Many of Nintendo's greatest products are 20+ years old. To enjoy a lot of that, you need to start diving in to some interesting gray areas, emulators just as an example. This site even posts reviews of Supa Boys and other recreated systems (that are one giant HACK, don't you forget!), Yet modifying a 3DS, Wii or NES Classic is unholy blasphemy.
I have a collection of almost 100 retro cartridges at this point. I love retro gaming, I am a computer scientist, and therefore love tinkering. Why is that not okay around here? I don't pirate anything-- but if you even express interest in things like this, you're evil in these parts. It just baffles me

Re: Rumour: Dark Souls 3 and Trilogy Possible on Nintendo Switch, If System Sales Are Solid

FrankJaeger

@jimi did you play the DLC to DSII? It was considerably better than the base game, to the point of redeeming it into a pretty good game IMO. This coming from someone who's beaten Demon Souls and considers DSI the best.

Honestly, just because DSII and III weren't AS good as DSI doesn't make them bad games. I think they're all pretty cool, and I'm a pretty **** hardcore gamer. Also, DSI, while the best, has bad PvP compared to the next two.

It's like Metroid Prime 2 & 3. They're not 9.5s like Super Metroid or OG Prime (allegorically, Demon's and Dark Souls), but they're still 9s and a very fun playthrough. It makes me sad when people write off the games entirely, in either series.

Also also, I think Bloodborne is a different beast altogether. Not that we'd ever get it on a non-Sony system anyhows

Re: Rumour: Dark Souls 3 and Trilogy Possible on Nintendo Switch, If System Sales Are Solid

FrankJaeger

Dark Souls is really, really, amazingly good. If you like Zelda and like a challenge these games were made for you.
I have beaten Demon's Souls, DSI, II and III, all their DLC and Bloodborne. Only thing I haven't beaten is Bloodborne DLC.
Also, don't listen to picky fanboys, DSII and III are still pretty good. DSI is the best, but the other two are totally worthy successors. People just get really emotional about Dark Souls.
I don't know how they'd manage multiplayer/messages besides maybe caching them, but I hope this is true. I've played every Zelda game, every Soulsborne game and every Elder Scrolls game. Portable Dark Souls III, Skyrim AND Zelda? Thats like, the entire difficulty spectrum of good Action-RPG games. Sign me up.

Re: Fangs For The Memories Castlevania, You're Now 30 Years Old

FrankJaeger

The mainline "Igavania" games-- Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia-- are just unfathomably good. There is not a single series with the same mixture of graphics and controls that are basically crack to me. Order of Ecclesia was an amazing high note to end upon. I hope Bloodstained lives up to their pedigree.

Re: Review: Tallowmere (Wii U eShop)

FrankJaeger

@Pahvi I don't think that strict of a definition holds up anymore, unfortunately :/ you are correct, the original Rogue and its ilk operated via turns, but subsequent games inspired by such have not necessarily adhered to that rule. From what I've seen, the modern roguelike adheres to being 1) randomly/procedurally generated & 2) involving permadeath. It would be nice if 3) were "is turn based", but, well, the times, they are a'changin'.

Edit: I saw someone else refer to a game adhering to rule 1 & 2 but not 3 as a "roguelite". I like that, a lot. I fear it will not stick however :/

@BenStegner, the author, the first "rougelike" has been fixed in Paragraph #1, but the second remains in Paragraph #2. Maybe a "Find -> Replace All"?

Re: Review: Tallowmere (Wii U eShop)

FrankJaeger

Game looks great, I'll definitely pick it up. I adore the Binding of Isaac and this looks similar (as several others have noted). @BenStegner, the review author... Is it a "rougelike", or a roguelike? should I be expecting a red-tinted game, or a procedurally generated permadeath game? In seriousness though, great review, but there are a few typos there.
