One of my all-time favorite NES games. Played the hell out of it, so much so that I stumbled across the "kill a boss with one grenade" trick without the benefit of magazine hints or gamefaqs. Still ticks me off that it doesn't work on every boss in the game.
The more I see of this game, the more I like it. It's going to be one of those rare console downloads that I will have to get. Not because I want to, but because of the principle of the matter.
Yes, the game play looks fun, but the over all concept and manner in which that game play appears to be presented.... Yeah, have to show my support in hopes of a disc-based or episodic download sequel release in the form of a first-person action RPG. Emphasis on the action.
Good review. I snagged this this one release day, read IGN's review yesterday, and found myself wondering if they were even playing the same game I was. Great game for Mecha fans.
On thing I haven't seen anyone mention in a review for this game is that, in addition to unlocking additional weapons over the course of the single-player campaign, you also unlock additional mechs once you've completed the single-player portion of the game.
Helix was well designed and gets played quite a bit in my household. I liked what I saw in the YouTube trailer for this game, and from Ed's comments on Rage of the Gladiator, this title sounds right up my ally.
Although in regards to the possibility of a sequel, if the WiiWare game does well, I think I would prefer to see a sequel in the form of a epic-scale retail release.
jp-30, you seem to forget that we live in the hideous "Age of Entitlement", where consumers expect perfection from all things..... or at the very least.... free warranty service three years after their warranty has expired.
As a Wii, 360 and PC owner, I say meh. On the one hand, I personally feel game developers have grown lazy in recent years (I blame Microsoft and DirectX). On the other hand, I feel consumers walk around with their expectations set somewhere above cloud level (a side effect of my job). So in my eyes, Telltale Games failed their target audience as much as the target audience failed Telltale.
And in the end.... Balance is achieved, all parties involved react as expected, I shrug and walk away muttering "meh".
"The typical Wii user doesn't have any idea that the Wii can connect to the internet."
Interestingly enough I was talking to a colleague of mine at work near the end of last year. We were comparing or game collections, I mentioned a couple of my favorite Wii titles... A couple of which were WiiWare games. Much to my shock and horror, she not only had never even visited the Wii shop channel, she didn't even know her Wii had built in WiFi.
I teased her mercilessly about it and still to this day my first response to any question she asks at the office is "Did you read the manual?"
At the same time I'm rather glad Onslaught wasn't released, as it would have been one more obstacle in a long line of distractions that's been conspiring to prevent me from making time to beat Gears of War 2's single player campaign.
Every day is a struggle.... Battling my wife for control of the consoles and battling my ADD-like tendency to jump randomly from game to game. Hell, I still haven't managed to beat MP3... Can't seem to find the focus.
I'd get into this. I'm rather fond of manga and manwa (I think that's what the Korean variation is called) and would read more of it.... if acquiring it didn't require either a trip to the bookstore or waiting for shipping.
I hate the bookstore... everytime I go I end up getting in a fight with either a yuppie-no-nothing or neo-nazi.
I'm just glad to see Luc didn't let "the man bring him down" over the bad press the initial release of the PC version. He's an artist first and a game designer second, and I respect the hell out of him for being willing to take the punches from the industry's press and stand beside his vision.
Personally speaking, I would never play or purchase any game he worked on for the PC purely because when it comes to games - my PC is MMO only.
Anything of Luc's that's released for the Wii however... I'll pay for and download. If the game play is good, awesome... If not... Meh, that's not why I bought it.
A work of art is a work of art regardless of it's format, and as an art collector, I personally feel true interactive works of art are too few and far between to let even one pass me by.
Besides, the issues are known and are hopefully being dealt with, so any Wii releases should be pretty refined.
Sub-par games often sell well to the "Wow, that looks so cool I don't need to read reviews before I buy it!" crowd and MegaMan 9 is really aimed squarely at it's already entrenched fan base.
Plättchen will do fine and Bplus will live on to make more games, good and bad.
I've the Windows PC version of this game, just recently beat it and now can't wait for Episode 2.
"On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness is an episodic RPG-adventure game series set in a deranged comic-book meets-pulp-horror 1920s universe. Armed with unconventional weaponry and witty repartee, you join forces with the Gabe and Tycho, the crime-solving team of the Startling Developments Detective Agency to make war on bizarre enemies and solve the mysteries hidden deep in the sinister heart of New Arcadia."
Honestly, I'm worried that it would be censored to the point that some of the humor would be lost if it was released for the Wii.... But then again, maybe not. It's only rated M.
@DEMON212 - For online play done right on the Wii, I point to MOH:H2. I've never had lag issues playing it, with the rare exception of times when my ISP was having issues over all. If it weren't for COH/V for the PC, it would be the only game I played online.
Regarding this game..... I may have to get it, sounds like it would be awesome for monthly game night. Which is, in all honestly, just an excuse for my friends and I to drink beer and yell obscenities at each other.
In the end, the solution I expect to see from Big N would be a small USB flash memory device, maybe multiple models, ranging in capacity from 4 to 16 gig.
Seriously, 16 gig SD 2.0 cards can be found in the $50 American range. I'd happily plunk down 50 bucks for 16 gig of storage for my Wii.
I used to love Chase H.Q., dumped buckets of quarters into the arcade version and wore out the D-Pad on one controller playing it at home..... Hope it makes it to the states soon-ish.
@ Anyone who's unaware..... especially Rexy for the "Were there any moaners continuously bickering about the state of SMRPG's release? Yes. For Cybernoid? No. Why? Because apparently those that remember the Commodore 64 are more patient and mild mannered." comment....
Cybernoid was also released for the NES, both the C64 and NES versions found their way to the states. OK game, but in the USA it was considered a "must rent" on the NES and a "must check out from the library" title for the C64.
In the end, the major reason we "Yanks" whine so much is that we're spoiled. We want everything because we're too used to getting it. Which is also why the C64 isn't memorable here..... At the same time it was available, so were many other home computers with the same or better features at the same or (more often) lower price point.
So yeah, we whine about the SMRPG, but seriously..... IMHO, aside from the Lord of the Rings game, the C64 had NOTHING that could compare to the awesome sauce that is the SMRPG.
There's a lot MS doesn't get..... Like the importance of keeping their internal memos..... well, internal (long story, short version being: never ask a Microsoft rep a question regarding an internal memo that was never supposed to go public at a trade show panel discussion unless you want to see them have a heart attack).
XNA sounds like it could have some real potential, but without policing potential developers and releases the way Nintendo does..... insert sound of toilet flushing followed by liberal use of plunger here Crap clog, Ph33r da over-flow of shovelware.
I caved and snagged it..... It's challenging (though I'd tipped back a few pints before playing it) and can be frustrating until you get the hang of it, but honestly..... I like it.
Decent game, I'd give it an 83 on a 100 point scale.
You've got to remember, it's been a long time since Nintendo has been "top-dog" and they've become so used to being in 3rd place that they're having trouble catching up with their own popularity.
"Spoken like a true fanboi" you say?
Meh, until the Wii was released, I was part of the "All consoles suck, the PC is the only true platform" crowd....... to the point that I collected consoles half just to lord my desktop PC's gaming might over their meager little heads.
Personally, I'm boycotting the game just because it advocates alcohol abuse.
Throwing ping-pong balls at poor defenseless beer. I mean really, what did that beer ever do to you? How'd you like it if someone pelted you with ping-pong balls?!?! It's practically a hate crime!
Yeah, there are currently some...... issues...... with the WiiWare service.
However, since this is The Big N's first real foray into the wild and crazy world of downloadable content and the first time they've been stuck in the often unenviable posistion of "Top-Dog" in the console wars in over a decade, I'm willing to cut them some slack.
They've already started to see where they've went wrong regarding storage issues and stated that they're looking in to various solutions (I'm expecting them to announce something before the end of the summer) and I personally believe they'll become more forthcoming regarding WiiWare release dates soon-ish.
My only concern is does this title suffer from the same issues with component video output as Top Hunter? If so..... I'll not be downloading it.
It's pretty inexcusable that some games have those sort of issues. I love classic games, but I just don't love them enough to keep two sets of cables dangling around cluttering up my entertainment center even more than it already is or a have second TV hooked up.
My wife has been warned: Wiiware release week, our home network will be under strain as I download everything I can get my bloody claws on.... And yup, this game is on "The List"

"Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon" has always been one of my favorite games for the N64. While I wait and pray for it's VC release, "The Legend of the Mystical Ninja" should keep me happy.
I've always been a huge fan of Ishikawa Goemon.... the man, the myth, the legend and the games!
Well.... We've a couple Castlevania games now.... When do we get Castlevania 2? Loved that game.
And speaking of "when do we get....", when's Zelda 2 coming out in the USA? *grumble*
Dragon's Curse is easily worth the 600 points. Of all the Wonderboy games, I hold it second only to Monster Land.
If you're under bandwidth restrictions, I would suggest considering it as a "last minute" download for this month (Like some, I'm hoping to see to see Zelda 2, Super Mario RPG or Super Metroid released on the US VC this month as well), but it really is a must-have title if you're a fan of side-scrolling action RPGs / adventure games.
