@Pak-Man If you have linked your Nintendo Network ID (the one you use on your Wii U) with your Nintendo Account and enabled to share the balance it should work for Wii U games as well (at least it does work for me)… The only things you can’t buy using the website are DLCs and DSiWare on the 3DS eShop (I had to redeem a gift card to buy those)
@bluesun The revision with a white Nintendo logo must’ve happened before 2008 because I own a German copy with a big diamond shaped USK rating that was used since 2008 (before being replaced by the redesigned square rating in 2009): https://i.imgur.com/aduV6NX.jpg
@Bolt_Strike Well, the DSi had DSiWare and an additional camera but in terms of hardware power, while the DSi is slightly more powerful than the DS, the were no games that took advantage of it and it was only used to handle stuff like the more advanced operating system. So the outcome is still the same: the New 3DS was the only time Nintendo did a mid-gen upgrade which provided more hardware power for games to run and it didn’t do exactly well and was more a waste of potential than anything (just take a look at the handful of games that actually used the better hardware) so I still think that Nintendo won’t do anything similar anytime soon…
@Bolt_Strike The Switch already had the typical Nintendo mid-gen refinement à la Nintendo DSi or GBA SP (neither of those revisions changed the hardware power of the console) with the Switch Lite and the Switch OLED but people are especially begging for a more powerful mid-gen upgrade and Nintendo did something like that only once with the New Nintendo 3DS and tbh nobody really profited from the new hardware. Also, it seems that the New 3DS wasn’t quite the success that Nintendo expected so I think that they won’t make any mid-gen hardware upgrades any time soon…
@Dracavius No?! My point is that they could‘ve sold more Xbox 360s and thus could have overtaken the PS3 sales wise if they didn’t focus so much on Kinect and a niche audience and instead made more games that appealed the general market. Cultural influence, if they won the generation, etc. has nothing to do with my statement…
@Dracavius Yeah but the PS3 still topped the 360 in terms of sales (cf. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_game_consoles). It was fairly close but the PS3 still sold more units. I wasn’t talking about who "won the war" (console wars are dumb anyway), I was talking about sales numbers.
Yeah, Microsoft really went all in "copying" the Wii with Kinect (as mentioned in the article) but also the Xbox avatars were basically a Mii ripoff and in the later half of the Xbox 360‘s life this stuff was basically Microsofts main focus and they stopped making new first party games apart from Kinect tech demos and the obligatory Halo, Gears of War and Forza games. And I guess that’s why in the end, the PS3 overtook the 360 sales-wise (despite its rough start) and this trend continued with the flawed launch of the Xbox One (main focus on multimedia instead of games, bundling Kinect with every Xbox One and having it as a requirement for the Xbox One to work, their initial plans of making the Xbox One an "always online"-system, …). The discontinuation of the Kinect signalizes a turning point in the Xbox One‘s marketing strategy and the systems main focus and I think for this very reason alone it was the right thing for Phil Spencer to do… I only wish they’d have made the Kinect compatible with Xbox Series for backwards compatibility reasons.
@Rayquaza2510 Weird, I have no credit card linked to my Paypal account and it still works fine for me. Seems like it's bugged for you. Did you try contacting the Nintendo support? Maybe they can help you
@Rayquaza2510 Same here in Germany. Nearly nobody uses credit cards and if someone owns a credit card it's only for vacations in other countries. (I have a prepaid credit card and I only ever used it to pay the shipping of a physical My Nintendo reward XD). But on the German eShop website I'm able to use PayPal for digital 3DS/Wii U games and to add funds to my account (I think I had to link my Nintendo Network ID w/ my Nintendo Account and then had to merge my funds). Is that not possible for you?
As said in the article, it's been this way in Europe since 2019 and using the website to charge up the balance isn't that big of a deal... (and even if it were still possible to use credit cards on the system, I'd still be cautious entering my credit card information into systems w/ outdated security standards from 2012)
The only real problem is, that you can only add fixed amounts of money (10€, 20€, etc.) on the website but even that can be avoided by buying the games on the eShop website (sadly DLC and DSiWare are not available on the eShop website so you still have to add funds to buy those...)
It would be cool to have this game available on modern platforms... Otherwise it would be unobtainable digitally once the PS3/Vita store closes, which is just a matter of time at this point.
But what I really want is a Switch port of the DS version of Chrono Trigger. Yes, I know that it is available on PC and mobile devices but this version is lacking content compared to the DS version and it would fit the Switch perfectly.
On an unrelated note, I really want a rerelease of Terranigma. This game is still stuck on SNES and that's a real shame...
@Rayquaza2510 Yeah, that’s one problem of mid-gen hardware upgrades: You‘d have to actively update games to make use of the new hardware, meaning a Switch Pro won’t solve any problems of a poorly optimized game on the current Switch (* sigh *). And I doubt that a publisher/dev/etc who already didn’t bother to optimize the game would go out of their way and rewrite the game to make use of new hardware.
On Topic: I think it’s quite amazing that Konami actually added exclusive content, QOL changes and reworked models to the 3DS version, while the HD version on PS3, PSVita and Xbox 360 is just the upscaled PS2 game…
I already own a physical copy of MGS3D but I hope the digital version gets back up very soon.
Personally, I think the price of 40€/year, which equates to 3.33€/month is reasonable. That’s just an additional amount of 1.60€/month for N64 and Mega Drive games. I‘ll definitely upgrade my membership when it launches in Europe tomorrow.
A cloud version might be justified for Kingdom Hearts 3 but in case of Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 not being able to port PS3 games over just seems lazy to me.
I‘m not a fan of cloud versions in general and I will definitely not get Kingdom Hearts on Switch. I‘m not sure yet but maybe I‘ll buy KH 1.5 and 2.5 on PS3…
@TheFrenchiestFry Well, a Chrono Cross remake before Chrono Trigger would make sense since Chrono Trigger is already available on PC and mobile while Chrono Cross is still only available on PS1 (and as PSone Classic on PS3/PSP/PSVita) and thus not really accessible…
I still don't understand why the German My Nintendo Store doesn't support any payment method apart from credit card, even though they accept Paypal as payment method on the eShop. As my credit card somehow doesn't work, I'll sadly have to pass...
@JamesR But that's already the case on the European 3DS & Wii U eShop 🤷🏻♂️, they removed the option to directly pay with credit card ages ago and you have to visit the website in order to add funds. I guess they removed it because the 3DS/Wii U can't handle modern security standards and thus using credit card data on it would be unsafe...
As Among Us is basically unplayable if they shut down the servers one day, a physical version just doesn't make sense to me: A major point in buying physical, is that I actually own the game and that I'll still be able to play it if —for one reason or another— the digital version gets removed. But this aspect of preserving a game just isn't true with physical copies of online games, as the physical copy is useless if the servers were shut down...
I love the Wii, it has a great library on its own and additionally the launch model is fully backwards compatible with GameCube games, making the selection of playable games on it superb...
On the other hand, the Switch is my least favorite Nintendo Console: The complete GUI is so bland and boring, it's somehow missing this quirky Nintendo touch (playful GUI, background music, a personality)
@BulbasaurusRex Yeah, it has more options on Switch but without some catchy background music and seeing the Miis running around afterwards, creating them isn’t half as much fun
And up until now, Miis were rarely used in Switch games and almost all games that use them are ports: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_games_featuring_Miis#Nintendo_Switch They even removed Mii support in the 3D All-Stars version of Mario Galaxy. But I’m glad that Nintendo started using them again lately and I hope they use them more in the future…
I really love the Miis and I‘m glad they’re making a comeback recently. They have this fun Nintendo charm and remind me of the old days, back when the UI of Nintendo consoles had a personality…
I‘m still mad they banished the Mii Editor into the system settings on Switch and made it as bland and generic as possible. Just having them aligned in a grid is dull 😕 And don’t get me started on how they got rid of all the catchy music in the Switch UI… 😭
Really glad I finally got a DS copy a couple of weeks ago. 40€ isn’t cheap but it’s a far more reasonable price than the prices it usually goes for these days… So far I really enjoy it and the story is very captivating
As l'm living near Cologne, I normally go there every year, so it's a bit sad that it doesn't take place this year...
But tbh, judging by the average cases we have here right now and how long it takes to get a vaccination, I didn't expect it to take place in the first place.
I played the fan remakes of them and I'd say they're more playable than the originals and way less frustrating due to unlimited continues and a usable button layout. But that doesn't change the subpar level design (they consist mostly of enemy spam), short length and hilariously bad animated cutscenes (though they're the only reason to play these games so this might be a pro)
And I must admit, the music is pretty good and the level backgrounds aren't half bad either...
As for the third game, Zelda's Adventure: I watched a let's play of it and it was the most boring game I've ever seen.
