@dskatter Hey, following your message. I did return the console to Nintendo. Turns out that the issue wasn't the card reader, the motherboard was faulty and a replacement is on the way
It comes down to this (imo)
Switch 2 games run better along with some patched S1 games
Switch 1 games that are available on steam (and not patched) run WAY better on the Steam Deck (Trails through Daybreak is what I'm playing at the moment)
If Nintendo was to 'encourage' some of the developers of the older games (e.g Triangle Strategy, Fire Emblem etc) to implement DLSS, these games would shine on SW2.
Also, Switch 2 is a console, and consoles are locked down, unlike the deck which is a handheld PC and can be heavily customised if you want to play with it. 99.99% of people probably don't even know or care what the TDP slider does.
Therefore a comparison video was kinda redundant before they hit record on the video camera
@dskatter I nearly sent mine back, the reader was fine, but then it just didn't read any cards whatsoever. The pins looked fine as well. Because Switch 1 games read directly from the card I found that Zelda crashed and I got a card error notice. Last couple of days I've been playing DQ3 and it's been okay. Wasn't sure if it was a software of hardware issue. I know it's not the cards, as I tried about a dozen when the issue was happening a lot. (they read fine on my old switch oled)
Safe to assume that we won't be getting any resolution / performance bumps for previous games. Kinda annoying as Square makes some of the best RPGs around.

I hope this solves the unreliability of the card reader.
