Literally built the goggles with my kid this morning. Can't wait for BOTW and Mario Odyssey updates. I don't even care that I'm paying for overpriced cardboard at this point - for me, a cheap entry into basic VR will hopefully (probably) pave the way for PSVR or Oculus.
Bit unfair to say both the PSP and PsVita failed to make an impact: 85 million PSP systems sold was approaching half of the Nintendo DS 'family' overall. Not to be sniffed at.
Seems like the Vita was what the Wii U was to its predecessor. A more specialized games library and a hardware message that wasn't clear in the eyes of the mainstream customer.
It's a tough one really. I think this is another case of being aimed at the new Nintendo fans rather than long-timers who have bought two or sometimes three iterations of Virtual Console games.
So long as they expand the library to include SNES and perhaps N64 (even GameCube and Wii games?!) as part of the annual fee, this'll eventually satisfy both new and old customers alike.
My other tuppence worth is that they should have charged for online right from the start given the fact games like MK8, Splatoon 2 and ARMS are multiplayer focused. Then it wouldn't feel like such a sting.
@JHDK With the greatest of respect, saying the DS "murdered" the PSP is not 100% accurate: yes it was more than double in overall sales figures, but 76 million in a portable hardware market that hit 226 million isn't a bad effort - especially when you consider that historically, nobody has come close to taking the crown from Nintendo in the handheld space.
I'm about to go back over the comments but totally agree with this level-headed article. I see comments on other gaming sites from "core" console gamers who said they'd buy a Nintendo if only it had all the third party titles on it
But there are two limiting factors. One is that Nintendo's philosophy post-GameCube has always been to produce less powerful hardware to ensure money is made on both hardware and software. I am sure this was a guiding idea from the days of Yamauchi (sp). Two: Nintendo would have a tough battle getting all of those core gamers off PlayStation Network and Xbox Live in favour of Nintendo Network. Keeping it free would be a great start, but still I think Switch will remain the second-user console for many homes.
I, too, am holding off with VC purchases until we know when/what transfer options there are for the Switch, if any.
Someone also needs to ask Monster Games why they never used the Excite Truck engine and controls to make F-Zero Wii. Get on that NLife! After the new Nascar game surely they can make F-Zeroom Switch?!
For me, concrete information on the NX at E3 will decide whether I buy a Wii U or NX this year/early next. (Edit: having not bought a Wii U and only just having bought a 2DS I should say. Late to the party this generation - though I normally start off with Nintendo then drift to another console once first-party releases start drying up.)

Re: Random: Amazon Accidentally Sends Customer An Entire Box Of Ken amiibo Figures
Heh. The boxes places like Amazon use are always too big for just one amiibo anyway!
Re: Random: Check Out The Retirement Gift Geoff Keighley Gave Reggie Fils-Aimé
Yeahhhhhhhhhhh this respect between the professionals is precisely what the games industry needs more of.
