The Super Mario Bros. Movie was predicted to have a big opening and early box office data coming in reveals the film has already collected a whopping $66.4 million globally on its first day. It banked $34.7 million at the international box office combined with the US opening to reach this total.
According to Deadline, Mario's new movie outing has already set multiple milestones and records around the world as a result of this - becoming "the top animated launch day ever" across 11 different markets. As noted by the source, this includes countries like "Germany, Spain, Argentina, Central America and Austria".
Below is a quick breakdown of Mario Movie's opening day in multiple countries:
- Mexico: The biggest debut for a Universal title ever & the second biggest animation opening behind Toy Story 4
- UK: The best-animated opening ever and biggest overall of 2023
- China: Biggest opening since start of the pandemic, and second biggest opening day for a studio title in 2023
- Germany: Universal's best opening day of all time and animation opening
- Spain: Biggest animation opening day ever, and biggest April opening day ever
- France: The biggest opening day of 2023, best opening for Illumination ever
- Italy: Biggest opening day for an animated movie ever in Spring and for a video game adaptation
- Taiwan: Top opening day ever for Illumination and Universal, biggest opening for a video game adaptation
- Australia: Best opening day of 2023, biggest ever for Illumination and top April debut ever
26 other markets around the world open today, and locations like Japan launch the film later on in April. The film has been estimated to bank an excess of $225 million in its opening weekend, potentially surpassing mega movies like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which banked $225.3 million.

I'm going Friday! Yay
Makes sense. Most folks are just gonna see it because it's Mario, not necessarily because it's good!
Taking my gal tomorrow night! Then we're gonna stay up all night playing Mario games!
Man those ‘records’ remind me of when people make up their categories for Guinness World Records. Most eggshells balanced on the nose of a brown-haired man called Alan in the living room of a 3 bedroom semi-detached house.
What is the record opening for an animated movie in the U.S.?
EDIT: For anyone who cares, here you go. Opening week gross in $millions
1 The Lion King 191.8
2 Incredibles 2 182.7
3 Finding Dory 135.1
4 Frozen II 130.3
5 Shrek the Third 121.6
6 Toy Story 4 120.9
7 Minions 115.2
8 Toy Story 3 110.3
9 Shrek 2 108.0
10 The Rise of Gru 107
These are the top 10 opening weeks for animated movies in U.S. & Canada. I just wanted to know since so many other countries were named but not the single biggest market for movie goers.
Nintendolife, you're welcome 😉
EDIT TWO: #1 is the CGI Lion King nobody will care about in 10 years, not the animated classic. Gross 🤦♂️
I just saw the movie, The whole movie was fun, not one minute wasted. 10/10.
I was smiling from beginning to end.
Was there any doubt. Itsa me. Mario
I hope all those people had a good time.
I saw the movie twice. I'm gonna go see it again.
I took my daughter to see it today. She was very excited and I smiled pretty much the whole movie. They did a great job!
Yeah I was pretty happy with it. I think everyone likes Mario as it is so being even somewhat a fan you will appreciate all the nods it does. I just hope Nintendo keeps this ball rolling and gives us some more tales from the mushroom kingdom.
Antman quantumania was not a big hit it is one of the worst scoring marvel movies.
Nice to see it doing well. Getting mostly positive reviews/impressions from folks online too, good stuff.
It looks to be a success - good news people put a lot of work into it.
I'm more curious why it didn't release simultaneously in Japan. I can only assume to not coincide with the Cherry Blossom festivals - but I could be wrong.
I want to know how this movie fares against Demon Slayer - and more importantly in real yen versus Ponyo.
@kfflscnt ant man made over 600M. It was a hit for Disney. The accountants at Disney couldn't give two fs about how many tomatoes the movie got.
Mario movie sweep!!
@Cashews it did not make over 600 million.
The box office is only 622 million.
The movie costs 200 million to make with around a 100 million in promotion cost.
So only 300 million.
@kfflscnt I think you two are disputing net v. gross.
Like others here, I hope those who watched it enjoyed it and I look forward to seeing it down the line in some capacity or other.
@nessisonett LOL best comment
For once, Japanese audiences are missing out on something Mario-related (the movie does not release in theaters in Japan until April 28...)
They honestly couldn't have picked a better time to release a Mario movie, what with this gen having Mario's best selling game ever. Mario Kart
(probably the main reason there was a big Kart sequence)
Along with every spin-off. I mean you know Mario has gotten more popular than ever when a spin-off that doesnt even have his name on the cover, Luigis Mansion 3, sold more than the genre defining Super Mario 64.
Not surprised. For the first time in 5 years, me, my wife, and two kids are all agreed on what film to watch! We've all grown up with the back-flipping, ground-pounding, wall-jumping plumber.
Is it Austria or Australia?!
@nessisonett I know Alan. He is very proud of his certificate. You just wait until he tries his next record attempt .This time it's going to be in a bungalow is all I can say.
I watched the movie just now and it was great in my opinion.
I gave the score 8 from 10.
I really wish the next 3D Mario games and Mario Kart games get some influence from the movie version.
They have a lot of potential.
@nessisonett There must be some stigma attached to those records to go so far out of your way to avoid the title of 'bloke with biggest nose.'
Gonnna see it today with my family! I think there’s seven of us going, cannot wait.
Just gonna say that there are two after credit scenes for the movie but one of you have to sit through the really long credits where it’s just a black screen with name scrolling up
@Pennilein69 According to Deadline "Austria".
@sketchturner
And remember, the weekend box office headline number that everyone will SHOUT about, will be the 5-day figure. For the 3-day weekend in North America (Canada & U.S.), it is projected to only make $92 million. I believe that would make it the #12 biggest animated opening ever.
But nothing can stop people screaming, posting, tweeting and regurgitating press releases...and then there's adjusting for inflation, which would place it even lower.
I took my kids to see it yesterday. It was really good fun. It’s a very warm hearted family film. No cynicism or messages other than positive ones about family, courage and resilience. No annoying characters, in fact they were all quite lovable, even Bowser (Jack Black steals the show as a good villain should). They also made Peach a hero in her own right but one who doesn’t overshadow Mario, who is brand new to this world. I found that quite refreshing, because as far back as SMB2 on the NES she was one of the team and it wasn’t until SM3DWorld that she didn’t need rescuing again (unless you count Super Princess Peach on DS). Is it a perfect film? No, but I honestly don’t know what a perfect Mario film would look like. It’s very similar in feel to the Sonic movies and that’s a good thing. More please!
I am going to see the movie this weekend, after seeing some trailers and 2 clips i am ready to say Let's-a-go and cheer for Mario and his friends.
Never had a doubt. Can't wait to see more U.S. numbers and the Japanese numbers when they get it.
@Cashews The third Ant Man movie didn't even make 500 million, only the second Ant Man movie made over 600 million Dollars.
@Truegamer79 is that what they're calling it now?
@kfflscnt 622 million is the second Ant Man movie's box office. Quantumania is below 500 million.
This result is not unexpected. It's probably going to be the biggest movie of the year.
They could have put the movie on nintendo shop for those who want to buy it and watch at home
After seeing it, this is well deserved. A visually appealing adventure that never takes itself too seriously or deeply is all that a Mario movie needs to be and they nailed it. I wish this movie's good vibes could drop the temperature in the country for even a moment.
Love to see it doing so well right from the start, absolutely well deserved in my opinion, hope it will reach or even smash the estimated total!
I am pleased to hear this. I want to be able to experience more Nintendo movie franchises, and this is point towards a positive sign in that direction. I will be seeing the movie with my family shorty, so I will be able to add to those numbers!
I watched it with my family in PR, and EVERYONE loved it. All kids and adults. We all gave it a 10/10. Easter eggs are EVERYWHERE. Not sure why the critics are bringing down the movie (for not having inclusion I bet)... and I still don't understand why John Leguizamo is criticizing the movie for not having Latino diversity, Taylor Joy is of Argentinian descent! I watched the movie in PR, she even appears in a small cameo talking in PERFECT Spanish telling everyone in Puerto Rico to enjoy the movie!
@SonOfDracula it's very good, trust me
@Devann
😉
So glad to hear this the movie was great. Take that critics.
@Outerdragon Why does the experience of another cancel out the experience of a critic? Each person's opinion of the movie exists in a vacuum; there's no global or collective hive mind that if we get enough votes all of a sudden means the movie is going to be 100% enjoyable to anyone who watches it lmfao.
The next mario 3d game should incorporate karts without being a racing game
@nessisonett it’s true, people can massage and twist stats to highlight whatever they want.
Who would have thought, that people would just go out to watch a movie and enjoy it, rather than obsess over a adaption of a video game, somehow wanting it to be the next citizen Kane.
This movie is going to be massive, and so what if the critics do not like it, the audiences seem to be loving it, can't wait to watch it with my daughter.
@Legacy2K,
Nothing to do with massaging statistics, the critics do not like it, but audiences seem to be loving it, and it's going to be one of the biggest grossing movies all year.
Perhaps the critics are overthinking things, or it's just not their cup of tea etc..
@SonOfDracula,
It's all down to personal subjective opinion, and by the same token all the negative views do not cancel out the positive audience figures either. Like most movies it's up to the individual weather or not they loke it or not, we can't all like the same things.
I am reserving judgement until I actually see it.
Having just watched it, I'm actually very happy to hear this.
Saw it yesterday and booked to watch again on Sunday. Loved the Sonic movies and loved this movie.
I hope that bigwigs observe that these films are successful because of the effort they put into wanting to make a good movie for the fans. Please no more video game adaptions like Assassins creed.
Well deserved, the movie is genuinely one of the best animated films in recent memory. Captured the spirit of Mario as good as anyone could hope for. Nintendo is destroying Disney on their very first attempt to make an animated film. Nobody would believe you some years ago.
I'm really looking forward to a sequel. If they take the criticism seriously they could really do better next time! Just hire Phil Lord and Christopher Miller already to write and direct, and give them complete creative freedom.
They dosed that "everything is awesome" vibe in the first Lego Movie perfectly! Mario needs that vibe, but it also needs more moments to stop and appreciate things for a moment.
Saw it yesterday with the family. Really good, family friendly film with plenty of Nintendo Easter eggs. Yes it is not an Oscar worthy nominee as you would expect (really not sure what some people are expecting??) but go into it with an expectation of fun and love of Nintendo and you will enjoy it.
Mid 40's and the minute I left the cinema, I wanted to go play some Mario. Nintendo keeping the kid alive in me 😀
@johnvboy Did you both enjoy the movie? Anything in it that you think could be subtle hints to a new Mario game?
Watched the movie the other day, twice, and frikin' loved it!
Kudos and congratulations to everyone involved.
If they just do basically the exact same thing for the next movie, pretty much following on from where they left off with the first one, and sorted.
Illumination + Nintendoes!
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed,
Not seen it as yet, so reserving my judgement till then, it does look fun, and I am a sucker for good animation. I will be waiting until it streams, as I prefer to watch from the comfort of my home theater.

@johnvboy You are one lucky dude!
@RetroGames,
Thank you, it's all DIY, apart from the initial building construction, my place to chill, although my daughter is a bit of a horror hound, so now controls a lot of movie nights.
@johnvboy Same here, sometimes the home cinema experience can be just as epic. I was supposed to have seen it with some mates but ended up In hospital this weekend and with it being Easter weekend everything is slow moving, if the movie was available to rent or stream now I would have had no problem being in hospital and playing some switch games
And that is an epic cinema set up, beautiful 🤩
@johnvboy Sick setup dude. You are giving me a new life goal.
@Switch_Pro,
Thank you, I started with a very humble set up all those years ago, it's been nice to build it up over the years.
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed,
Thanks, as I said a lot of it is DIY hard work, but it's great to kick back no matter what time of day. and watch a movie without annoying anyone.
@johnvboy What’s the colour vibrancy like with your projector? Other than being in a cinema I think I’ve only seen one or two in action before and that was some years ago
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed,
The JVC DLA models are very good, and have superb black and contrast levels, as for colour they are also excellent. I used to sell this sort of kit, so I am pretty decent at the set up. I used the Spears & Munsil calibration disc to make sure things were correct, although the colour accuracy on the JVC was pretty decent straight out of the box. To be honest you would just think you were watching a very large good quality T.V set.
I think most people have a poor view of projectors because they may have just seen a cheaper model, usually projected onto a white wall, in not the best lighting conditions. I have a totally light controlled room, dark ultra matt finished walls, (these two things matter a lot more than people think), I also bought a decent projector screen from Screen Research, which not only has a high gain, but also evenly distributes the projected image across it's surface evenly, so no hotspots etc.
@johnvboy To be honest, my experience with a home projector was at a mates house once and their family were watching Eastenders at the time, I remember making a comment about having such a nice piece of kit wasted on Eastenders, that was probably a cheap model, but I’m pretty sure the picture quality wasn’t HD at the time.
I bought an OLED TV a couple of years ago, I love it but I’m constantly worried about burn in, I mostly use it for my Switch and movies, I’d rather not have that worry about the HUD causing burn, playing Zelda is sometimes a bother as well with the placement of hearts on the screen and no option of completely turning off all the HUD
But I’d love to buy a projector at some point, I’ve been thinking about it for sometime. Thank you for some of your tips, I really appreciate it, I’ll keep them in mind
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed
No problem, the OLED telly’s are awesome, I have an LG model and games look great on it, no issues with burn in as yet… fingers and toes crossed.
