Even if Banjo-Kazooie is now Microsoft-owned, the bear and bird duo will always have a special place in the hearts of Nintendo gamers around the world. And although Rare re-released an improved version of the original title during the Xbox 360 generation, many fans are still left wondering what a proper remaster of the original Nintendo 64 outing might look like.
With this in mind, we turn our attention to Project Dream. We've previously highlighted this YouTube channel's work and now it's back with "Banjo-Kazooie: The Complete Remaster". While it's not actually a functioning game, it should still give you enough of an idea about what could be...
The same trailer also includes new shots and music for Mad Monster Mansion, as well as visual enhancements to Spiral Mountain and Rusty Bucket Bay based on some feedback about the previous videos.
If this has got you in the mood for some Banjo-Kazooie, Nintendo recently made the original N64 hit available via its Switch Online Expansion Pack service. Of course, you could also boot up an original cartridge copy. What do you think of this fan-made take on a Banjo-Kazooie remaster? Tell us down below.

There's a distinct lack of character and atmosphere in this entire showcase, but I generally approve of a remake/remaster. If it turns heads and gets people talking, awesome, but I really doubt we'll see any kind of return for these two.
This is cool and a lot of it feels very true to the original, but I think it would be improved if they dialled back the realistic foliage, grass and ivy. It doesn't mesh that well with that chunky, cartoony look that's so iconic to a lot of Rare N64 games. I think they got the balance right with Bubblegloop Swamp though, and Freezeezy Peak, Clanker's Cavern and most of Grunty's lair look great.
Rare you takin' notes?
Looks really bland. Honestly looks like a year 1 games design project where they’ve downloaded 10 free asset packs and mashed something random together.
Stop putting photorealistic bloom and grass where they don't belong!
This looks absolutely stunning!
Trailer?! Its 20 minutes long !!
Of course, you could also boot up an original cartridge copy
Yes I shall.
All original baby.
Paid for once and I own it.
me sees a "photorealistic" game
also me knows it is not photo realistic, also it is often not even fun
internet OOH NINTENDO SHOULD MAKE THIS, WE WOULD SO SO BUY IT!! (but actually no)
media OH LOOK ANOTHER PHOTOREALISTIC GAME, LET'S MAKE A "ARTICLE" ABOUT IT!.
Every
Single
Time
Lol at the people here who clearly don’t understand what a fan-made homage is.
It looks great.
@Rayquaza2510 Totally agree games that look like this are very often bad, but didn't one win the game awards. I haven't played that game but as soon as I saw it I thought the same.
Looks nice and all but I stopped caring about Banjo Kazooie years ago. Much better 3D Platformers than that out now.
@EveryGameBeLike
What notes should they take? 😂
Also, under every video of this kind someone HAS to come up with an overused phrase like:
Blank take notes!
or...
Blank hire this guy!
Get a working Stop 'n' Swop in there, and I'm in!
Looks just as bland and generic as the Zelda one you covered a while ago.
Paused at 27 seconds in...can you tell this is a Banjo Kazooie game? No.
I'm sorry, I know a lot of effort has gone in but it doesn't look amazing, it looks generic and bland. I needs more character and some art direction.
Nintendo should re-release this great game!!!
Looks great. I love fan made stuff. Looks like he put a lot of passion into it.
@Ogbert that’s the thing… you stopped 27 second in 😒 short-span attention maybe?
@Rayquaza2510
nothing in the article is calling this "photorealistic" though, the only mention of the term outside of your comment is referring to the bloom effect.
In terms of being "fun" most of these kinds of trailers or tech demos are more proof of concept or fan reimagining rather than being treated as a game
in terms of comments in these kinds of articles there is usually a fair split between those praising it and those criticizing it.
in terms of the quotes, do you have a more direct source of your quotes since "internet" and "media" are very broad terms.
Man what fans are able to do is crazy. I was playing the fan made unreal engine version of ocarina of time, holy moly it whas amazing.
@fafonio no i watched it all, but I'm saying even 27 seconds in if you stop the video, it's undistinguishable as Banjo Kazooie. Paused, not stopped, they are different.
And then later it's mostly high res textures on low polys.
@Mgalens looking at your reaction, you don't understand what my comment does mean, that's fine because there are more people that don't get it.
If you spend long enough on the internet (don't, I just have too much time that's why) you would know why I said it that way.
My original comment has a sarcastic tone for a reason, it's a simplified version that's all.
"Proving" stuff or "giving a source" is not the point my comment tried to make, I could do that but I learned to stop considering most people can Google it themself, as long you know where to look for.
But again that's not the point of my original comment, if it was it would lack the sarcasm it has would have some links instead.
Thanks to Nintendo Switch Online, I played this game for the first time earlier this year, it was so much fun experiencing this for the first time. Not that it would ever happen, but I would totally buy a remake/remaster of this game, just to physically own it.
@Rayquaza2510
ah i see.
I imagine it was because i had been worn down by comments where they use those kind of things in what seems like a serious argument which can end up muddying the discussion.
it can sometimes be hard to gauge intent on the internet with just text and that sometimes it can be hard to tell what comments are trying to show a serious discussion. (i think its known as "poes law")
@Lony85
TBH i would even buy a collection of the HD versions of the Xbox ones (the ones which were also in rare replay) just to own them on switch plus the higher framerate on Tooie was nice.
That music though! ♩♫♬♪♩
guess we have different definitions of "stunning" ..
I want it so bad, the designer clearly understands the style
I absolutely love this new trend of fans homogenizing diverse visual styles into one.
Can you believe how much potential this remake will have if the game wasn't own by Nintendo.
Oh wait.
To be honest, I think it is ridiculous we can't get a new 'Banjo Kazooie' game or a remastered collection of 'Banjo Kazooie' and 'Banjo Tooie' when there are far less popular video games being brought back now and getting new entries and remakes after they have been dead for ages like Alex Kidd and Wonder Boy and I 100 percent blame Microsoft 'cause if 'Banjo Kazooie' had been owned by Nintendo I have no doubt we would still be getting 'Banjo Kazooie' games now based on the popularity of the first two games but when Microsoft took over Rare we got that crappy 'Nuts and Bolts' game that was nothing like 'Banjo Kazooie' and 'Banjo Tooie' and was more like a spinoff game like 'Mario Kart' or 'Mario Tennis' and used the failure of the sales of that as a reason to not make any more 'Banjo Kazooie' games. Imagine if Nintendo suddenly decided to stop making any Mario games 'cause a 'Mario Golf' game flopped 'cause that is exactly what Rare done.
The comments are always a trip in these fanmade remaster articles.
As much as there is some charm missing, I'm super impressed. I expected some 1-minute trailer, but damn they remade like every level. Very very cool. I'd love a remake with usable camera control.
Strongly agree with some of the other comments. I love where this is going an the work is truly incredible. But theres no character, its just that standard grass and bloom effect that seems to be used in every single fan remake.
@TeeJay They aren't wrong though. Its incredible but it just feels..generic.
it just looks generic, just because things can look realistic doesn't mean they should. Some people think realism = good graphics but I just think it looks boring and uninspired. Just looking at that water or the grass on the ground and I'd have no idea what game it is, could be anything at all; the real game has identifiable textures for everything that give it it's own charm.
The photo realistic trees and stuff do look beautiful, but they aren’t right for Banjo, as others have said. I wish Pokémon Legends Arceus had trees that good.
