Remember when Nintendo helpfully suggested that you not sit on your Switch? Or when it warned against placing it in your backpack without first popping it inside a case? Better still, can you recall when the company was thoughtful enough to remind you that animal urine and games consoles do not a happy marriage make?
Well, if you're the kind of person who saw those announcements and came away feeling slightly more intelligent, then you're going to love the next piece of wisdom Nintendo's Japanese customer service account is offering up:
Here's a crude Google translation:
If you drop the Nintendo Switch on the floor or the ground, buttons, sticks, etc. may break down even if the screen is not cracked.
Do not drop it or hit it against a hard object.
In case you were wondering what happens when you do drop your Switch, check out this video from a while back:

Years ago My ex got mad and threw my switch across the room and it went right into the bed frame. Like joy con first halfway through and was stuck in it.
I knew at that point we were going to fight because the switch had just came out and was selling for numbers, but when I pulled it out, the switch was actually unharmed. Not even a scuff.I am still using it to this day.
Nintendo really makes some sturdy goods.
Thanks Nintendo
"Do not drop your switch, as you will realise it is not made of the usual Nintendium that we made all our older consoles with when it disintegrates into a thousand pieces"
So I have been playing on my Switch the wrong way all this time?!
Such enlightenment. Thank you, Reggie, for showing us the way.
Please don't tell me it's taken them 5 years for them to say 'hey, don't drop your fragile electronic device, ok?'
Some people need the advice I suppose...
When the next firmware update drops you can drop it, however (all they will add is more stability)
As if the vast majority of situations where the Switch drops is intentional... but, um ok, Nintendo.
There goes Nintendo taking the fun out of everything again. Sony has never told me not to drop or hit my PlayStation.
I dropped my Switch several times over the years and two of those times the Joy-Con it fell on somehow jumped of the part that goes into the rails on the Switch. I had to open some screws and put it back in, no big deal. The Switch body on it's own can be dropped from the third floor, it's just the Joy-Cons that get damaged.
Well drat, there go my afternoon plans. 🤷♂️
I accidentally dropped my switch this morning and seeing this article I feel attacked now. Thanks Nintendo.
Thankfully my Switch is 100% fine.
Man, if only I saw that tweet yesterday
Nintendo : Please don't drop your Switch.
Me : Let's see. Oops...
Thx for the warning, Nintendo, I actually planned to do that later today
Who's intentions will be to drop there devices? Nobody. Accidents happen often.
Now they tell us, I’ve been using it as a hammer for the last few months.
Bit late Nintendo. I've woken up every day for the last five years, had a coffee, brushed my teeth, gotten dressed and dropped my Switch from my bedroom window and JUST NOW you're telling me I SHOULDN'T do that?!?! Ridiculous.
Queue Nicolas Cage “You don’t say” meme.
I work for a tech company and we see so many broken Switch consoles…..it’s rarely broken screens though, 99% of the time it’s faulty charging ports or water damage.
I was wondering what I was doing wrong
Sad Nintendo doesn’t make Superman systems anymore. Cause I remember this video of someone doing a drop test on GameCube, ps2, and Xbox. They did four different drops that I think went to 20 feet and the GameCube survived and still worked.
Nintendo - WARNING, do not use your Joy-con in the way we designed them to be used, as over time the control sticks may start to drift.
It's safe to immerse in water though right?
They don't say anything about shooting it, so us Americans are fine.
Could've told me sooner, Nintendo.
Now it's too late. I thought it was fine.
I also told my dogs that, many times, "please don't drop the Switch or pee on it!", while we use it as a frisbee outside. But sometimes it seems like they do it on purpose.
Well, there goes my weekend. Thanks, Nintendo.
I nearly dropped mine into the toilet playing Zelda many years ago. That is one of my most treasured memories.
@Rpg-lover accidents happen but being careful is a deliberate choice... even if some people can’t for the life of them be careful lol
Well duh! I dropped my Wii u gamepad once and I don't know what the hell happened but suddenly the range didn't work anymore. I had to literally be five inches from the console or it wouldn't connect. It was weird. I had to send it in for a repair too.
Only play in docked mode. Problem fixed.
After all those stability patches?
I shouldn't drop it, but I can throw it, right?
You can't tell me what to do, Nintendo, you're not my mom!
It's over, Switch. I have the high ground!
@KoiTenchi you're not alone i recently drop my switch due too a cockroach flying on my head and i accidentally pulled my headset, it doesn't have any damages and still works fine, I'd say it was knee high i felt attacked too
I have never even dropped my legit or hacked switch, but the joycon do not properly lock into the rails on either switch on either side. Anyone else have that problem where they don't fully lock into the rails and can come out while in handheld?
@Burning_Spear and seeing how fragile the first gen vita was Sony should have been the main company stressing caution and safety.
@Strictlystyles dude. I left mine on top of my car in it case and it feel off, it wouldn’t work docked but it did work handheld. Pretty crazy.
The more smooth translation is:
"If you drop your Nintendo Switch on the floor or ground, even if the screen is not broken, the buttons and sticks may be damaged.
Please do not drop it or hit it against a hard object."
They had to say this due to people are losing their minds 😔
NO OFFENSE!!!!!
I accidentally dropped my new OLED a few weeks after purchase. I kind of threw it down on tile. I was pretty horrified, but I think the Hori pad pro saved it. Only the right Hori pad was on it. It bent the rail on the Hori pad, but basically did nothing to the OLED Switch. I even bent the rail back into functional use using the Switch. A narrow escape.
What about washing machines? Can I put it in a washing machine?
Uh no duh. That’s pretty obvious.
Wait I thought all the stability updates were supposed to fix this so you could drop it all you desire?!
I dropped mine and it landed on the side. Broke/ bent the right side track for the controller. I bent it back and still use the controller and switch.
From a system that I wouldn’t let my kids touch, to something that has chunks of plastic broken off is casing, my launch switch has taken quite a beating over 5 years. It has survived plenty of drops, but best was the day I sat it i top of my truck as I was loading kids into back seat, then drove off. Got like 2 miles down road, realized, turned back to find it sitting on side of road in dirt, still 100% intact and working. We just got our 4th switch, being that I wanted an oled and my youngest was using the launch one more and more. Everyone now has one in the house, except the wife, who just rolls her eyes at us
Im not surprised. Nintendo had to tell their fans not to eat the switch carts.
I've been playing with it wrong this entire time. I always tend to throw my switch at the wall as hard as I can after every loss of mario kart.
Could of told us sooner Nintendo, I dropped my Dsi and the L button is stuck, how am I going to play Diddy Kong Racing now?!
@Matl not their fault the earth has been almost entirely stripped of nintendium. Scientists are looking into syntheslsizing it in a lab.
Breaking your Switch may cause it to stop working.
So if we can't sit on it, drop it, or let animals urinate on it, what good is it?
At least we can still scuba dive with it.
People die if they are killed.
I’m reading these comments and it seems like way too many people actually drop their switches - on purpose no less
@Mario_is_a_Pratt Only if you don't turn it on.
First time seeing that video. Outcome would be different if they sent the switch up in the air without the joy-cons on it. Because you could see that the switch landed hard on the blue controller side when it impacted the ground (have to stop the video at the right moment to see that). So that controller saved the Switch and the other controller from destruction.
If only Nintendo knew how many times I dropped my old one as I walked across my driveway or when I left it on the floor and accidentally stepped on it. Man I did not take care of that thing. Well hopefully GameStop will give me 100 bucks for my switch with a screen scratched at every angle and plastic chipped off on the joycons.
lol, lets try it out!
I've only dropped mine like 3 times and each time I would carefully go over it and make sure it was OK, and then we have my niece who plays pokemon on it and drop it at will . . .
@HamatoYoshi Tell us more, Master Splinter. About how the white man likes to bathe with his Switch?
-sits and listens intently-
@siavm did you not see the included video of a switch falling from 1000 ft and surviving?
