Taiwanese developer Glass Heart Games has revealed its debut title Vigil: The Longest Night. The game will be launching on other platforms in early 2020, with a Switch release planned for "later".
Inspired by classics like Castlevania and modern hits like Salt and Sanctuary and Bloodborne, Vigil: The Longest Night is a 2D side-scroller said to blend "intricate action" and horror. The game sees Leila, a member of the Vigil, returning to her hometown in search of a lost sister, but she soon gets lost within a world of terror as she discovers a source of evil which plagues the land.
Glass Heart Games promises "precise and technical combat as well as a rich and strong narrative"; you can see a tasty amount of that combat in the trailer above. Here's a list of key features to tell you a little more:
Key Features:
- Experiment with 4 types of weapons — sword, heavy weapons, twin daggers, and bow — along with many mystical variations to be discovered.
- Use dozens of unique items to help, heal, and harm.
- Level up a complex skill tree to help you create the ultimate warrior of light.
- Battle variety of brutal enemies and the bizarre bosses from the depths of your nightmares.
- Unravel the multiple endings and uncover the secrets that lurk in the darkness.
- Become infected with the sinister mood evoked by dank caves, abandoned villages, and haunted forests.
- Listen to the atmospheric music by the talented Jouni Valjakka of popular Finish band Whispered.

Nice... Love what I'm seeing.
Looks good so far
Dank caves bro.
Remember when Bloodstained was criticized for the graphics. Yep these don't look any better than pre-update Bloodstained.
Looks ok but pixel art is still king:)
@Chunkboi79
So long as it runs smoothly, it doesn't really bother me.
Not a pretty game. It doesn't seem to have any real art direction, it looks thrown together. Horrible "animation" too. I really dislike this type of marionette limb animation. Either animate your characters frame by frame in 2D, or use polys, skeletons and mo-cap. This half way house stuff looks terrible.
Sick! Love the art direction, different character types and the mid-air bow-and-arrow action. I hope they don’t overcomplicate it with RPG elements like Bloodstained. If they nail the gameplay, I’m in.
Artstyle looks fine but i don't like the animation.
THIS is my kind of game
Getting strong Salt & Sanctuary vibe from the screenshots and that is a good thing
Ehhhh, no thanks. I hate those janky animations.
Initially I only looked at screenshots and was like 🤔
But then after the video I was like 😊😃
I’ll probably buy this I’m loving what I’m seeing
Yes please! The combat looks really good and I like these animations. The colors look a little washed out like S&S, but I can deal with that. Let’s hope it performs well on Switch. I’ll pick this up on PC but will definitely buy it again on Switch if it offers some replayability and the port is good.
Like the art direction. Strong Dead Cells vibe.
I hear Castlevania and my heart flutters.... Metroidvania not so much. Save Odallus, these Castlevania inspired games are not scratching the itch.
I think it looks pretty good. Action seems tight and punchy enough. I'm keeping my eye on it.
Looks great! This is better style than Bloodstained goofy monsters and slot machine enemies..
All it needs is excellent gameplay and I think we’re good 😀
These female lead castlevania style games are becoming too common and generic.
@ramu-chan I don't really follow. Looked it through a few times, and there's no half-assed animation at least on the player character (hard to see on the enemies because of the editing, which is kinda horrendous).
Could you elaborate?
All I've noticed from closer study of the player character is that it is fully animated, each part of the model displaying movement when actions are taken.
@Blizzia The characters aren't animated in the traditional sense. They're not a series of hand drawn frames, as you would get in a game like Cuphead. Instead they're simply limbs detached from the body and rotated on a pivot on the GPU. The effect looks very mechanical and lacking in character. It's a common technique now simply because it's incredibly cheap.
Looks like they beat Bloodstained at their own game, but i assume this isn't the switch version we are seeing here.
Looks nice but they will curse the experience with bloodstained.
Hmm, looks pretty rough.
