It's been a busy week learning about games due in the next few months, but a range of titles are available today. The Switch is particularly busy with retail and download-only games, while the 3DS has the week's biggest release; there are the usual download and DLC options, too. Let's get to it.
Switch Retail Downloads
NBA 2K18 (2K Games, €66.99/ £54.99) - A welcome arrival of a major sports franchise on the Switch, this promises a feature-rich edition (including the online and career modes) that can also be played on the go. Available on the eShop from 15th September, at retail from 17th October.
NBA 2K18 Legend Edition (2K Games, €99.99 / £84.99) - Available on the eShop from 15th September, at retail from 17th October.
NBA 2K18 Legend Gold Edition (2K Games, €149.99 / £119.99) - Available on the eShop from 15th September, at retail from 17th October.
Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition (Ubisoft, €39.99 / £29.99) - A solid edition of one of the finest 2D platformers in the last generation. It originally made its mark on Nintendo gamers with a Wii U release, while this Switch version includes some extra options in the Kung Foot minigame while also utilising handheld mode for touch-based 'Murfy' sections. With co-op and all the goodness that made the original a must-have it's worth considering; we were certainly impressed in our Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition review.
Switch eShop
Quest of Dungeons (Upfall Studios, €8.99 / £7.99) - This is a roguelike dungeon crawler that turned out to be very good on the Wii U. This has all the same content along with a new environment, more enemies and tile-sets along with an in-game achievement system. We'll get cracking on a review.
Kingdom: New Lands (Raw Fury, €14.99 / £13.49) - This is actually the second game in the series (the first is still coming to Switch), and offers a stylish experience that has been well received on other platforms. You have to rule over a wide range of beasts and facilities while building up your kingdom with careful strategy. We quite liked it, albeit with provisos, in our Kingdom: New Lands review.
PAN-PAN (CIRCLE Entertainment, €5.00 / £4.99) - PAN-PAN is an adventure that expands on the concept of environmental narrative storytelling, with puzzle solving and exploration elements at its core. Set against a backdrop of ambient sounds crafted by renowned sound composer Simon Viklund, your task is to fix your downed spaceship and begin the pilgrimage home. We'll let you know what we think of it in a review.
Semispheres (Vivid Helix, €9.99 / £8.99) - A 2D puzzle game with a lovely synth-led soundtrack by none other than Sid Barnhoorn, you control two protagonists on either side of the screen; the challenge is to safely guide both through the world. We'll let you know what we think in a review.
Robonauts (QubicGames, €13.49 / £12.14 until 29th September, then €14.99 / £13.49) - This arcade-style shooter uses gravity to switch up gameplay as you journey off into the unknowns of space. The adventure contains twelve different planetary systems, an array of weapons and the added bonus of solo and local multiplayer. Available from 15th September.
Beach Buggy Racing (Vector Unit, €9.99 / £9.99) - An interesting budget kart racer with 15 tracks across six modes. The trailer looks promising, with various characters, vehicles and power-ups shown off. We'll see whether it deserves a place on the podium in a review.
36 Fragments of Midnight (Ratalaika Games, €2.99 / £2.99) - A procedurally generated platformer in which each attempt consists of finding and collection 36 fragments, all while dodging various dangers. We'll see if it delivers the moon on a stick in a review.
Spinmaster (HAMSTER, €6.99 / £6.29) - A Neo Geo platformer that lets you take control of Johnny and Tom in their quest to rescue Mary and get the five pieces of a mysterious treasure map from an evil organization lead by one Dr. De Playne. While the plot - even by 1993 standards - isn't exactly award-winning, the frantic gameplay and humour certainly was perfect coin-munching material, with a mandatory mine cart section included for good measure.

Metroid: Samus Returns (Nintendo, €44.99 / £39.99) - Well, Samus is back. This 2D (though the 3D effect is terrific) entry is a reimagining of Metroid II: Return of Samus from the Game Boy days. It introduces some excellent new ideas, however, and delivers one of the best games in the illustrious history of the series; we explain how in our Metroid: Samus Returns review. Available from 15th September.

Buy Samus.
Sorry maybe I could be a little more subtle with that.
BUY SAMUS.
Some pretty great stuff this week, although I have to admit. I'm all about the new Metroid.
My copy of Rayman got delivered yesterday, but in the middle of Sonic Mania at the moment so probably won't play it until next week. Also downloaded the Octopath Demo this morning when i heard about it, just in case they pull it
I've preordered Samus Returns. Unfortunately, my Legacy Edition got canceled a while back due to low supply. I really wanted it. I'm also downloading Project Octopath Traveler demo right now.
That's actually a pretty solid line-up for Switcheroos, even for people who couldn't give two hoops about basketball. I'd swap six Rayman games for one Metroid, though. You lucky 3DS owners.
What? NBA2K18 at retail front 17th october?
Sorry but my local store (Media Markt) is already selling physical copies of it from today for €55, they are just in the store on the shelves.
Kingdom New Lands is a nice game, but the game has heavy framedrops when there is fog so the devs should fix that.
@crackafreeze what do you mean?
Pretty busy week. Rayman Legends and Metroid physically and Kingdom: New Lands.
We don't get Minecraft? That sucks. I'm totally curious about it but won't be buying, I'll pick up a second hand copy someday.
I look forward to reviews of some of those Switch eShop games!
@Rayquaza2510 For most games on Nintendo consoles that aren't Pokémon, you can usually find the games one or two days before release. It's annoying (almost all the Metroid Returns deluxe edition have already been sold and are sold by scalpers. With a bonus for them of course).
Also, why the hell do you need to spend 100 real life money of any currency for a basketball game ? WHY.
W. H. Y.
Been waiting a while for discounts on a few Switch games, guess I'll have to keep on waiting.
@neufel true, I know stores that do that even a week before release.
But NL says the retail copy will be released on oct 17 while NBA retail is already in stores for Switch, thats a whole month before
I bought Metroid: Samus Returns Legacy Edition. And I'll likely buy Another World - 20th Anniversary Edition for Wii U as well.
@ThomasBW84 Small typo. You left out that you get "450,000 VC" for €99.99/£79.99 in NBA 2K18.
What, 67€?! Ok, I'm holding off on NBA2k. That's way too expensive.
NBA 2K18 Legend Gold Edition – €149.99 / £119.99 LMAO
It gets better.
NBA 2K18 Virtual Currency – 450,000 VC (2K Games) - €99.99/£79.99
God help whoever spends €250 on this game. They need help. The worst thing is there's nothing stopping someone from buying even more Virtual Currency. You couldn't pay me enough to play this.
Metroid Samus Returns, suprisingly low block size. I might buy as soon as possible, i have a need for good action game too ^^
@shani was thinking that. Very pricey.
Metroid physical copy for me. Will try it next week as I'm on holidays from tomorrow but I'm bee balls deep in Hyrule Warriors atm. Yeah, I only started on the 3ds this week and I'm loving it.
@Rayquaza2510 Damn, you're right. I've read that as 17th september. This can't be right.
Virtual currency?😳
@Rayquaza2510 just be download code maybe
Metroid: Samus Retail
@sandman89 nope, they only sell the retail copy
Also downloaded the Octopath demo. Looks like a very interesting game.
Funny that the Nintendo Direct said, that the name is still work in progress, but they already have a demo out.
@neufel I remember there was some PlayStation racing game that wanted you to spend $100 on an in-game car. Because... you probably wouldn't ever get to drive the REAL car, so that makes the in-game purchase quite a deal.
"NBA 2K18 Virtual Currency – €99.99/ £79.99 VC (2K Games, €99.99/ £79.99)"
(Falls off chair laughing)
So I heard that NBA is 23GB to download.
Some people here are saying that boxed copies containing a download code are in stores.
If it's 23GB that would fit on the internal memory of the Switch especially bifnit was the cartridge version.
Is it possible that the picture of the box saying 'SD Card required' was from one of the download codes in a box and the whole panic about Switch physical games needing an SD card was misplaced?
Virtual Currency ? WTF ?
I need to read a review of this game
Nothing for me this week... except SAMUS RETURNS!
Etrian Odyssey V demo. I'll likely buy the full game once it's released.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE what's even more: this game only has a shelf life of one year until the next version comes out next year
From the Wii U eShop discounts I really recommend Squids Odyssey and Asdivine Hearts!
What are the differences between the 3 NBA 2K18 versions? Is the 149,99€ Gold Edition still a 8 GB card where you need to download the rest of the game?
@PtM and what's that for? Loot boxes
Does the demo of Etrian Odyssey 5 let you keep your save for the full game?
@PtM thanks but means nothing to me. Lol
Any buying hard copies this voucher might help. Amazon UK only

Anyone found this on the eShop?
Switch Demo
Project Octopath Traveler (Square Enix, free)
@DavidH
Yes, I did!. Not directly via the eShop though. I think I found it via the news page.
Thanks will take a look. Searching on eShop didn't bring it up at all.
@readyletsgo and all the other European players:
Don't buy the game on the European eshop (69,99€).
Buy it on the American eshop instead (59,99$ = ~50€). You'll save almost 20€!
Make sure to provide a zip code (here are some to choose from, for example) from Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire or Oregon as they have no sales tax. Otherwise the purchase will be more expensive.
The easiest way to pay is to get Nintendo eshop cards for the US eshop from Play-asia or any of the other shops mentioned here.
In the end I paid 51,99€.
@shani brilliant, thanks for the great advice!!
The only UK listing for the NBA Legend Edition I can find is through GAME: http://www.game.co.uk/en/nba-2k18-legend-edition-only-at-game-2020284
Is it just a a couple of codes that are the difference, or is there a decent size package?
And also, why is there no physical Gold Edition?
