It's that time once again for the Nintendo Download Update, and this week brings us a long-awaited sandbox game, a promising Wii U eShop exclusive, some enticing 3DS eShop options, DLC, a lot of discounts and more besides. There's plenty to cover, so let's get to it.
Missed the European Nintendo Download Update details earlier in the week? Don't get in a muddle, the details are right here.
Wii U eShop
Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Microsoft Studios, $29.99) - It's the pop culture phenomenon that's been a long time coming, making its Wii U début via the eShop. This blocky world-building sandbox has inspired some efforts from smaller publishers, yet arrives with a whole lot of features, six bundled DLC packs and more available to buy separately. Despite the lack of inventory management on the GamePad it will include USB keyboard and voice chat support, and we'll see how it all stacks up in our review.
Temple of Yog (CHUDHUD Industries, $5.99) - This Wii U eShop-exclusive roguelike will have players fight their way through and explore procedurally generated areas, and there'll be regular switches between a Light world on the TV and Shadow world on the GamePad as you try to guide your 'Tribute' through the various challenges. It's going to be released in chunks, or 'Epochs'; those that buy early will pay the initial price and get all additional content releases for free, while those that buy the game later will gradually need to pay more as the game grows. We'll dive into the adventure and bring you a review.
Island Flight Simulator (Joindots, $7.99) - A genre not exactly blessed with options on the Wii U, this apparent flight-sim gives you 12 islands to travel between and a range of missions that include 'illegal' deliveries for 'shifty clients'. Crikey. We'll take off and bring you a review soon.
Wii U Virtual Console
Mega Man Zero 4 (Capcom, $7.99) - The final instalment in this series and the latest GBA arrival on Wii U, this naturally introduces new foes and abilities; you'll now have a Z Knuckle punch, be able to improve your stats from destroyed enemy parts and change the weather. It largely carries on the good work of its predecessors, earning it a hearty recommendation from us in our Mega Man Zero 4 review.
Megaman Battle Network 5 Team: Colonel & Protoman (Capcom, $7.99) - This spin-off, turn-based series continues with yet another GBA entry to come over to the Wii U Virtual Console. Once again there are evil forces to stop and two version to choose from; this is rather similar to its predecessors, naturally, but earned a strong recommendation in our review.

Minecraft. That is all.
I saw the word "Zero" under the virtual console banner and got excited for a second it was "Zero Mission." Oh well.
So Island Flight Simulator sounds entertaining at least... if the review are good, maybe I'll pick that up.
And so I'll be the first to ask... .what's Minecraft? Long awaited sequel to Minesweeper I'm hoping?
I really hope there are more Curve games on sale than just those two. I was hoping for a sale similar to Europe's. If not, then I'll probably just get Tengami, and maybe Swords & Soldiers 2.
I voted Dark Witch 2 but will most likely also get Temple Of Yog. I'm also hoping that there is more to the Circle sales than just what is listed there.
Finally Mercenaries Saga 2 is on sale and isn't Steel Empire supposed to be on sale today too?
It'd be nice if we got that AVGN Adventures discount sometime soon in Europe. I'd definitely grab it for 5€.
Ask and you shall receive
does the Star Wars packs come with associated music?
@HeroOfCybertron I'm going to be picking it up, for sure. Does anybody have any idea how much the discount is? I wish the press release stated
@grumblebuzzz me too, when is it comin? It is so depressing
I'm curious about those Megaman games. Seems to be a ton of them though. Kind of hard knowing Japan got Mother 3. Just another exclusive for them. At least I can understand that one more than one's that are actually translated like Sonic Advance, Zero Mission, Mario RPG, etc.
Discounts on a lot of GREAT games on Wii U this week. It might be finally time to get Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures.
@xHHHx I really don't think we are at this point. NA is so behind the rest of the world in Virtual Console releases that they'll never "catch up" to Europe or Japan.
I was holding out hope for a surprise announcement of the SNES Star Wars games this week, coinciding with the movie... Oh well.
Fractured Soul for $2.39 is a steal, for anyone who hasn't played it.
I am contemplating on downloading Devil's Third since there aren't any physical copies left.
Pretty good week for me. Minecraft Wii U and The Legend of Dark Witch Episode 2, I'm getting. Discounts are also nice.
Edit: I'm also getting the 3DS themes, though I wish NoA dialed back on their Home Theme restrictions
@grumblebuzzz there's a line longer than an iPhone release out the door for Zero Mission. I wonder when Nintendo is going to open the doors and let our freezing butts in? I have Zero Mission Blue Balls. Can I say that on here?
I was kinda hoping for more VC given what's available in Europe, but it's hard arguing the significance of a Minecraft release on Wii U.
Mega Man Zero 4 is a masterpiece.
Do not buy Minecraft on the Wii U, the world size is really tiny. SHOCKINGLY tiny.
Search for 'How big is the Minecraft: Wii U Edition world?' on youtube, you'll see what I mean. Very disappointing!
Still waiting on Ninja Gaiden 2 & 3 on NA Wii U VC...
@grumblebuzzz oh jeez stop it. The 3 vc games released today have not released in other regions. We arnt so much behind as on a totally different order of releases. Metroid Zero Mission will come just like Mario 3 did. It's not as good as fusion btw.
Still no Lionel City Builder? So much for coming out 'early December.' Nothing for me this week then.
Actually, no. I may get the Cloud DLC for 3DS.
@mjharper we got thre at once. That's pretty good. Hopefully we can keep that pace going for a bit.
@Honelith From what I read, it's the same size as XB360/PS3. Not surprising for the initial release, really.
@faint I will stop nothing. You guys get all the big name retro games that I want while we get a slow trickle of obscure sequels and pure junk.
Also, Zero Mission is better than Fusion in my eyes and is my favorite 2D Metroid game, which is something I hear from a lot of fans.
Nothing for me this week. The update for Cube Life comes out next week, and I'm hoping the boys don't notice MineCraft is available......I did grab a $35 eShop card from the Best Buy sale though just in case they hound me for it and I cave in.
Hoping for a couple more Fire Emblem VC releases in NA soon!
Nothing for me this week, unless the Smash dlc still counts as something which would be unfair. I got too many games to beat and complete.
Nothing. I have plenty to catch up on, not including what's under the Christmas tree.
Great, another week of Capcom's crapfest™.
Anyways, I might get Minecraft.
@bro2dragons Same here. And Shadows of the Empire. Maybe next week to give people more Star Wars after seeing the new movie...
@grumblebuzzz I live in North America bro
The e-shop was crashing this morning (7-8am EST) with Wii-U error code 102-2533. When I finally get into the store, Minecraft is not for sale. Went out for a few hours (holiday shopping), tried the eshop again (11:45am) and the Minecraft page still doesn't have an option to buy the game, only to add it to your wishlist.
Already downloaded all the Smash DLC (darn you costumes that were so tempting at only $2.30). Will be downloading Minecraft this afternoon when it goes live. Really hoping Microsoft patches it later with inventory management on the GamePad for single player as it would be a simple fix. The GamePad would be the absolute best way to manage inventory in Minecraft and the fact it's missing just seems like really lazy development to me. But not many devs seem to know how to use the GamePad in any other way than simply mirroring the main screen.
Still pretty disappointed we haven't seen Xenoblade Chronicles as a Wii VC title yet, but maybe they are reserving that for next week as a pre-Christmas release.
I guess if you go into Minecraft on PS Vita/PS3/xbox360/Wii U as though you're exploring a tiny island, then you'll be fine. But it's not a world, that's for sure.
@gregrout it releases at noon
I'll take the following:
Minecraft
MegaMan Zero 4
MegaMan Battle Network 5: Team Colonel
MegaMan Battle Network 5: Team ProtoMan
Smash DLC Pack #5 Wii U/3DS
@faint Thank you.
@gregrout Week in and week out the eShop updates at 9AM Pacific time, 12 noon eastern time. Maybe sometimes it's a little late, but I've never seen it early.
Didn't that woman on Twitch last Monday say Wii U was getting the Xbox ONE version? I'm almost certain I heard her say that with my own 2 ears and people were commenting on it as well.
Xbox360 version at the XboxOne price is not the way to market things.
@Honelith had this been confirmed? I've watched a few early live streams and it doesn't seem that small. None of the streamers brought it up ether
@ekreig that's the same price as the ps4 bundle and the Xbox one bundle. They get exclusive textures and so will we. They just are not ready yet. That's why we start off with some of the dlc for free.
Wasn't there going to be a discount for Affordable Space Adventures in December for NA? Did I miss it???
@faint "@grumblebuzzz oh jeez stop it. The 3 vc games released today have not released in other regions. We arnt so much behind as on a totally different order of releases. Metroid Zero Mission will come just like Mario 3 did. It's not as good as fusion btw."
Not true, all 3 VC releases have been in Europe for months now.
Smash dlc and happily, nothing else. I have all three consoles and a 3DS. Monetarily, I'm tapped out
@Grumblevolcano huh well guess I was wrong. I could have sworn Europe was behind us in the mega man releases. Three vc titles on the same day is still a good number
Now that the sales are up, I'm a bit disappointed. There are more Curve games on sale, but the game I was most excited to get, The Swindle, is 3x more than in the European sale. I'll probably get Nova-111, but I'll wait on The Swindle.
Well I already got Cloud, other than that another boring week as always.
Nothing for me this week. I would consider Tengami if I didn't already have it on PC.
Boy am I glad I bought a Vita. There's plenty of games to buy on there, and my money will be going to Sony seeing as Nintendo can't seem to put anything decent out on the 3DS e-shop in months.
Got the smash DLC bundle 5 for both versions, and might get Minecraft if I got people to play with.
@Megumi temple of yog looks pretty good.
@Barbiegurl777 ????????????????????????????
Skyrim comes to WiiU
Already have Cloud so nothing else from the list.
Hmm... mighy pick Karous for shmup fix.
Dark Witch 2, Gunslugs 2 (it's $1.99, can't beat that), Smash DLC later in the week when the siblings come to town.
Some of this looks interesting but X calls to me.
Enjoying practicing with Cloud and the beauty of the Midgar stage, but that's it for me this week.
Back to XCX, it seems.
I may pick up Cloud+Midgar. We shall see. I'll be honest, I have not played Smash for a while so I may be done with DLC.
Happy Bday Mega Man!
How much is Mercenaries Sage 2 on sale for?
Where is Super Mario RPG?
Where is Metroid: Zero Mission?
Where is Star Fox SNES?
Where is Star Fox 64?
Where is Chu Chu Rocket Advance?
Nothing for me this week.
And...still no zero mission. But at least I finally got MMZ4. The ZM wait continues...
@MikeW The original Star Fox isn't coming for reasons that involve the SuperFX chip. Super Mario RPG isn't coming because Square Enix. Chu Chu Rocket Advance is third party. Zero Mission and SF64 you'll have to ask Nintendo about.
I want none of that rubbish.
Next week's releases for VC better be good, NOA needs to release about 25 games to catch up with EU VC.
@IceClimbers
Why would Square Enix be an issue for Super Mario RPG? It came out on Wii VC in NA and then Wii U VC in Japan. Squaresoft has nothing to do with its unavailability elsewhere, just NOA execs being lazy.
@XCWarrior I'm sure everyone is assuming you're trolling us with your "What is Minecraft" question. But just in case you're not, no it's not a sequel to mine sweeper. It's a game with terrible graphics where you can build and design almost anything. I tried it and I don't like it, but the Vast majority of people do especially kids. If I had to guess, I'd guess it's currently the most popular video game in existence.
I tried to DL Minecraft last night and the eshop was overloaded with traffic. This morning when I finally was able to login, the game wasn't avalable yet. Is it now?
@Dark-Link73 it's available now
@leo13 Not sure if that falls under trolling. More delibrate hardcore sarcasm. Trolling would be like, "Oh look, the baby Nintendo geeks finally get a 5 year old game I paid $10 for in early access. I pretty much recommended all the major changes you will all play. Microsoft should be paying me... yada yada yaa."
I did mess around with Minecraft during the beta days... I spent more time downloading it then I did playing. I agree, it is not a good "game."
I already bought cloud+midgar so I'll probably be set with that. I haven't bought Minecraft on any other device so I don't think I'll start now. No one I know would play it with me anyways. I kinda preferred Terraria anyway.
As for other stuff, I got a free code of Etrian Mystery Dungeon but I already have it physically. No idea what I'm gonna do with it. I'd like to trade it for Legend of Legacy or Stella Glow but I know I'll have a hell of a time doing so. Doesn't help that it's on sale now either.
@IceClimbers I don't think Square Enix is a problem anymore, namely because of Smash. If there were still issues, why would Square allow Cloud in Smash in addition to Chocobo and Geno outfits?
Reggie: "Ah, what a day to kick back and relax. Oh right, we gotta release some VC games. throws dart at board Oh? No Zero Mission? Oh well...guess I'll just be 'lazy' and release these Mega Man games."
I'm trying to emulate what some fans think of Nintendo's VC service
Probably getting nothing but I might double dip on Thomas Was Alone for $2. We'll see how I'm feeling next week.
@XCWarrior Nope... Sorry to disappoint, but it's actually a racing simulator.
@faint ????????
Mega Man Zero Collection on DS, then I'll bite. Rather have that version on my TV. No thanks to Minecraft. I never cared, never will. Anybody who hasn't got AVGN adventures yet, better get on it. Smash DLC needs a whole sale.
@LztheQuack it is now Virtual Mega Man Console
@LztheQuack Heh, ain't dat the truth.
Dark Witch 2 and some of those discounts.
Only the Cloud+Midgar DLC, don't want anything else.
Here's hoping Bayonetta gets a discount so I can get it and prepare for February. Too hype!
@LztheQuack Just got a GPD XD. Problem solved.
@Mus1cLov3r the ?????? Was in response to a cray cray post above.
@faint To you, it may be crazy; but how about letting folks believe what they want to? They aren't hurting you.
Every Thursday since March I log on each morning hoping for that surprise announcement for Zero Mission on the VC. And every week the struggle gets harder and harder. Without Capcom this week we would've gotten jack
@Mus1cLov3r that's why I only put up question marks until pressed to answer for them.
Jesus Xmas mega man again??? You really bite the balony NOA!! Please take a look at the stuff your European and Japanese counterparts are putting out!!! 3 years now and the original Wii has such a better selection of classics still!! Unbelievable
I'd buy Minecraft if it wasn't so overpriced, but $30 is ridiculous considering it only costs $20 on the other systems.
@LztheQuack
well, it IS mega man's birthday today after all..
@joey302 I've thrown in the towel with NA vc. It's great that there are other options for retro gamers. No more drip feeding lackluster Thursday's for me.
@KnightRider666 I have spent way less money this year due to some bad software compared to years past. I bought 3 retail games and like 15 indie games between the 3ds and the Wii-U shop. My son bought me xenoblade X for Christmas which I started a couple days ago. Its awesome by the way . I guess my point is.....it has been a light year, especially in the retail area. I am looking forward to aying Final Fantasy Explorers soon. Next year will be very interesting
@Windy: I hear you. You should look into buying a Vita. I was a Vita hater in the past, but they have some exclusive games(mainly RPG's) that are awesome. The Blue Vita is on sale at Gamestop for $170 through Sunday. I suggest you look into that. I'm very happy with it, and I rarely even touch my 3DS anymore.
@Honelith seriously? To the Internet! I wasn't going to buy it anyways, but that's ridiculous.
@KnightRider666 I actually think ive bought my last system. I mean I am getting really old. lol so old im pooping dust. Its not just age though. I do love gaming and maybe this years pace from nintendo suits me. Im just finding other areas now which interest me at 50. I will game until the very end I just dont need a bunch of systems to choose from anymore. Ive got to get out and watch my Grandkids play ball and grow up.
@TrueWiiMaster
The Swindle is not on sale in Europe. I guess it's listing was just a mistake.
And I got Minecraft now, will enjoy both MC and the smash DLC.
Nothing for me this week since I am way too busy with other games to want to buy even more for my backlog. There are some decent choices there though!
So is there any verdict on whether or not Temple of Yog was a pile of ____ or not? I don't think I've seen a single review for the game and not much coverage overall for it. The premise seemed cool but that could work very differently in practice

@Jayvir
Here is a review: http://www.8worldsnews.com/temple-of-yog-review-wii-u/
It looks good. I will definitively get it once it is released in Europe. If you're interested you should get it now. Because it will cost more when the first update pack comes out.
@Windy: I hear you, bro. Enjoy what you have in the mean time.
@faint: Lmfao! Don't try to reason with BarbieGurl777. Been there, done that... Waste of time.
Mega Man Zero 4, Smash dlc, & maybe one of the 3ds discounts, if I get e-shop cred for Christmas. & probably Rytmik, too.
I just wish Nintendo would just come out and say why there is no more VC love for the 3DS anymore. My opinion is they are just baiting players to buy a Wii U, but it's a disappointing marketing move to me as they are releasing games like Hyrule Warriors anyway!
@Magrane Same here. I agree that's it's probably a marketing decision to entice fans to pick up a Wii U. It's a shame for sure.
I might get AVGN. I passed on the 3DS version and the even cheaper Steam version which included the movie for less than $5.00. I really want it on Wii U because I can play it on T.V. and in my hands.
