The start of another week has rolled around, so that means it's time for more Nintendo Download Update news in Europe. This week serves up some promising downloads with a frantic multiplayer Nindie game, a couple of Mario sporting games, another potentially wonderful 3D Classic from SEGA and more. Let's get to it.
Wii U eShop
STARWHAL (Breakfall, €9.99 / £8.99) - An intense and chaotic multiplayer title, the Wii U version includes an exclusive new 5 player mode. This mode titled "Blastopus" involves players fighting against each other, and adds a fifth player to the action with the assistance of the Wii U GamePad. We found this to be a delight in our STARWHAL review.
Whispering Willows (Abstraction Games, €9.99 / £7.99) - A narrative driven 2D adventure that was originally on Ouya, you play as a young girl called Elena who can project her spirit out of her body; it sounds interesting as a concept, but we'll see whether it has the right spirit in our review.
Mario Sports Mix (Nintendo, €14.99 / £13.49 until 15th October, then €19.99 / £17.99) - We have another Wii retail game on the eShop, this time with one of the various minigame titles that arrived on the hugely successful little console. This features sports such as Basketball and Ice Hockey, and we had a lot of fun with it back in our Mario Sports Mix review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Mario Golf (Nintendo, €9.99 / £8.99) - The Nintendo 64 had some excellent multiplayer games and spin-offs, and another arrives on the Wii U in the form of this collection of golfing shenanigans. There are six courses and 10 modes to try out; this was a trailblazer in the genre of podgy mascots showing surprising sporting prowess. We gave this a solid recommendation in our Mario Golf review.
Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures (Bandai Namco, €7.99 / £5.49) - A SNES title from the mascots heyday, this is an "innovative interactive cartoon", or at least as far as a game like this can be on 16-bit hardware; this does also include full arcade versions of Pac-Man and Ms Pac-Man, too. We'll gobble this up for a review.
Dig Dug II (Bandai Namco, €4.99 / £3.49) - Bandai Namco keeps up its run of retro sequels on the Wii U with this Dig Dug NES entry, which moves the action from underground up to the surface. We'll dig in for a review.
Pocky & Rocky With Becky (Natsume, €6.99 / £6.29) - The GBA can't miss out on the Virtual Console goodness either, so Natsume steps up with this action / adventure / shooter; you embark on a quest across seven stages to defeat an evil Hydra Dragon and a army of mythical creatures. We'll bring you a review soon.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Citizens of Earth (Atlus, €4.99 / £4.00 until 22nd October, normally €11.99 / £9.99)
Little Inferno (Tomorrow Corporation, €4.99 / £4.49 until 15th October, normally €9.99 / £8.99)
3DS eShop
3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (SEGA, €4.99 / £4.49) - The brilliant M2-developed series of retro SEGA titles given new life on the 3DS continues with this highly regarded Sonic title. When debates are had over the best ever Sonic game this one is normally in the conversation, which at the time added the spin dash to speed the mascot up. We'll check this out and dash into a review.

Citizens of Earth (Atlus, €4.99 / £4.00 until 22nd October, normally €11.99 / £9.99)

That Sonic 2 artwork is beautiful.
When I was a kid, I remember reading of SNES game Pocky & Rocky from a local Nintendo Magazine, and liking the look of it.
Maybe I should see if this GBA-version is as good as that preview back then.
Sonic 2 Finally! Maybe gettin citizens of earth if the game is properly patched by now.
@TomJ Yes, in Europe we can play Donkey Kong 64 in 50Hz... like 17 years ago...
I guess both departments need reinvigorations...
Mario Sport Mix is the wrong category in the article. It should be under VC.
I'm so happy that the best Sonic game is finally coming to 3DS with the usual superb M2 treatment.
@gaming_24_7 I know that it sucks, but there's not much NOE can do about 50Hz...at least Nintendo is optimizing their games unlike Sony. I downloaded Symphony of the Night a couple of months ago and it's so slow and the image is squashed.
Well, in the eShop it's ranked in the same categories with the rest of the older consoles, so in my books it's VC.
@BigBabyPeach Of course they can solve the 50Hz problem. One easy solution for example: Nintendo could put the US- and the EU-version into the E-Shop. Then the player can choose when starting the game which version she wants to play. Easy, self-explanatory and it would satisfy everybody.
By the way: Is Mario Golf also just in 50Hz?
@SanderEvers @Kolzig I'm also going by the 'listed under other consoles' mentality (probably wrong) and shaking my fist at the arrangement in this list
Good week for Europe!
Wow, finally a good week!
Will be getting Mario Sports Mix, Pocky & Rocky With Becky & 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Might get STARWHAL later on if there's a discount, looks like a game I'll get bored with quickly.
Also want Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures and Dig Dug II, but the VC titles are a bit pricey. Maybe on a future bad week.
@ULTRA-64 @SanderEvers @Kolzig If Nintendo decides to release a Wii U Family edition that doesn't play Wii games, like the Wii Family edition didn't play GameCube games, would Wii games be VC then? Just something to ponder, like like Wii Family didn't play GameCube games, and Wii Mini, colored Netflix red, didn't play Netflix.
My issue with Mario Sports Mix is in describing it as a "minigame" collection. Wario is a minigame collection, Rabbids are minigame collections, Sports Mix was good, Dodge ball is arguably the best dodge ball game on the market, the tournament brackets were a nice touch, and for reasons that totally are beyond me you got to fight boss monsters from Final Fantasy games, still not sure how they got in there. For $15 it's worth picking up.
@gaming_24_7 Wait, I thought NoE already used the US versions on the Wii U VC, or is that only for pre-N64 games?
Well, now that the Senran Kagura 2 DLC is all released, it's gonna be a good number of boring Thursdays before something exciting shows up again...
@Andyliini I dunno if that applies to the GBA version as well, but Pocky & Rocky was pretty damn difficult on the SNES, so you might wanna look into that.
Supposedly Race the Sun is also arriving this week, having been delayed from last week. Looking forward to getting that along with Sonic 2!
Been waiting for Retro City Rampage: DX to see a discount im definately going to grab that especially seeing as it received a nice update some time ago for my New 3DS: http://retrocityrampage.com/20150212.php
@BarryDunne Probably, since eveny other 3D classic game contained everything every version of said game had to offer + new stuff.
In regards to Mario Golf:
I heard that Capcom messed with their GBA MegaMan Battle Network games to make multiplayer exclusive content available even though these VC titles dont support multi player.
Did Nintendo think of the GB Link stuff this time around ?
If im correct, you miss out on some characters in both games.
The optimal solution woul dbe to enable the 3DS VC game to link up with the WiiU VC game...oh well, a man can dream.
Wow Nintendo of America should take a good hard look at the vc lineup here from noe!! That's how it's done Reggie!!!
Wait October 8th? Its the 5th though, whats going on?
Starwhal and the discounted Little Inferno, yes.
Surprised they're not waiting to release the sports titles (including Tennis N64) alongside Ultra Smash. What they did with Kirby I thought was great (putting all the VC Kirby games on discount to mark the release of Don't Forget Your Paintbrush or whatever they called it), but it didn't happen with Yoshi so sadly (I was hoping Yoshi's Island would finally get an eshop release), and obviously it would give people too much incentive to buy a game that so far hasn't exactly blown anyone away.
I'm also bored of what's there for the NES and SNES, I want more RPGs.
Whispering Willows is a maybe. It has some favourable reviews mentioning artwork, sound and storyline, but most find the puzzles too easy and the whole adventure is rather short. Might be a good intro to the genre for the younger audience. I'll maybe wait for a sale though, pending the review on how it plays on the Wii U.
Nothing for me this week thanks.
Although none of the games released are interesting to me, I still am thrilled to see so many VC games in one week. I wish NoA would do this as it's been one game a week or most of the Wii U's lifespan.
So, Mario Kart 64 or one of the Mario Parties will hopefully be the next N64 release.
@Alpha
Europe gets their stuff announced 3 days early to be released on Thursday. NA has their stuff announced like 1-2 hours before they are released on Thursday.
@Moon Yeah Sonic looked better before Sega changed all the related artwork to be more "cool".
I can't believe no nice discounts on any Super Mario games still but I'm not that bothered....
As long as my Wii works with Super Mario All Stars I'm happy.
Sonic 2 instant download for me as I still have credit left on my account. Thank You Sega and Nintendo.
Nothing of interest for me this week.
@TomJ It's not much better tbh.
Sports Mix might tempt me - I've wanted it for ages but only been willing to pay less than what it goes for on eBay, but having it digitally might force my hand.
@JeffreyG They seem to pick and choose what we get,for example Mario 64 and World are the US 60 HZ versions but Ocarina of Time and Super Metroid among others are the optimized 50 HZ PAL versions. That means other than playing them on an emulator us PAL gamers have never had the chance to play these classics in their original form which in 2015 is frankly ridiculous.
My deepest condolences to Europe for having received Pocky & Rocky with Becky; even more condolences to the poor souls that actually decide to play it You have my sympathies
Also, Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures? Wow, didn't see that one coming.
@JeffreyG Nintendo uses some US versions for VC-Titles in Europe but not all. For example Super Mario 64 is the US version and that is great, in my opinion. But there are some people that don't speak english and they would prefer the already translated versions. Therefore Nintendo released DK64 in 50Hz since there the text is more important than in SM64.
Therefore: Nintendo should simply give us both versions. Period.
(For me, I definitely won't put any more money into mediocre 50 Hz versions.)
@gaming_24_7 100% agreed. One additional problem to 50Hz versions is that Wii U is unable to output 50Hz, so it repeats the last frame every time, affecting visuals and controls.
And here I am with NoA's VC... Zero Mission-less
Nah nothing again. I kind of feel that the wii vc was much better for releases than the wii u vc
Didn't Sport Mix have online on Wii? I suppose that's out of the question, now?
I might get Dig Dug 2, can't remember if you can only play on the surface or underground too, in that one.
@Alpha you've fallen down the rabbit hole again and slipped forward time just ask the magic talking carrot beside you...
@BarryDunne Most likely the ability to play as Knuckles or Tails isn't included. However, if 3D Sonic 3 & Knuckles becomes a reality, then maybe we can see Knuckles in Sonic 2.
Wow... I've never heard of Mario Sports Mix and I had a pretty big Wii games library. Guess I'll buy it as a VC title now.
@gaming_24_7 True, but I thought you criticized the NOE department in your original post and I don't think NOE could decide on their own to let Europeans download whichever version of a game they want. I get your point though, just saying that that decision would have to be for every region.
Welcome back SNES games. You have been missed. SOLD!!!!
Hot damn, FOUR VC games AND a Wii title all in ONE week? NoE is spoiling you guys something FIERCE!
There's that Sonic 2 3d everyone has been waiting on. SEGA! Single handedly saving Classic 3d gaming. Where are You Nintendo? Konami?
@Lord I thought they would transfer all the Wii VC too the Wii-U. I guess that's too much ask. Plus everyone who downloaded VC games would have wanted their games for free as it should be.
@Windy Konami? want a 3D Pachinko on your system?
The Konami you once knew is dead. Seriously; dead dead. They killed Hudson too.
Still wanting on my Shining Force 3d. Do you not want my money.
Is Citizens of Earth worth it? 5€ is an awesome deal if it's a good game.
The 3DS in PAL is only getting sonic 2 without sega the 3DS would be dead and no dig dug 2 what is the 3DS vc button pusher on vacation for 12 months.
I was gonna say lackluster, but Sonic! (^_^)/☆
I've already given up on NOA catching up with noj with vc games 342-191. But now it seems noe (198-191) now pulling away from NOA too now!! Jeez Reggie! Can we squeeze out more than one this Thursday?? Is that too difficult or too much to ask?!? A little variety would be nice! I've been only talking about this for 2 years!!!
@Windy Logic and Nintendo don't walk together lately.
Compared to Nintendo, M2 does excellent work on 3DS, now it's when you can say that Sega does what Nintendon't. I can't wait for 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2!
picking Retro city rampage dx up, for that price. Waiting on that Fast Racing Neo release date, hope its still this month, but who knows...
My son has been dreaming of owning Mario Sports Mix for months now. This is almost too good to be true, PLEASE bring it to North America, NoA!
@khululy haha doesn't sound too bad but Konami owns all of the Hudson soft IP's plus the castlevania series which I have thought should have gotten the classic 3D treatment since the beginning
Hard to let Citizens of Earth go by at that price.
Definitely getting Sonic 2. This will end quite a long drought on the 3DS for me as I haven't bought anything on it for a while!
And what does America get? FUNFAIR PARTY GAMES DISCOUNT 1 PENNY OFF REGULAR PRICE GIGANTIC STEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!
@VanillaLake And that's only possible because Nintendo decided to stop because they hate money.
Its not worth downloading Mario Sports Mix since its cheaper to buy the physical disc. At least the actual VC games have suspend features and save states. So shop smarter.
@ianolivia Nintendo does not make any sense nor do they follow any logic, the few things we have achieved like getting Project Zero/Fatal Frame is because we are complaining all the time on Miiverse, Twitter, etc. about that. So keep complaining, guys.
