It's the start of a normal week in the world of the big N, so naturally it kicks off with the Nintendo Download Update details in Europe. This week brings three promising and relatively high profile retail releases, two diverse offerings on the Wii U eShop along with some retro goodies, some puzzling goodness on the 3DS eShop and much more. Let's get to the details!
Wii U eShop
Shiftlings (Activision, €14.99 / £13.99) - A rather flashy co-op platformer that previously arrived on PC, this features two alien brothers that need to tackle a whole load of puzzle-based levels; they're tethered together and alternate between being inflated and being fully mobile. This can be played solo or in two player co-op, and we'll let you know what we think in a review.
Cube Life: Island Survival (Cypronia, €6.99 / £5.39) - This is a block-building survival game, so is naturally inspired by the Minecraft phenomenon. The Survival mode features the exploration, forging and survival aspects familiar in the genre, while Creative mode lets you generate structures that can be shared on Miiverse. Despite some design flaws we thought this deserved a recommendation in our Cube Life: Island Survival review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Dr Kawashima's BRAIN TRAINING: How Old is Your Brain? (Nintendo, €6.99 / £6.29) - An iconic DS title that did much to define and popularise the 'TOUCH! Generation' range on the DS, you can now tackle its challenges and give your brain a workout on Wii U. It was actually available for free (for a spell) last year, so you can check out our Dr Kawashima's BRAIN TRAINING: How Old is Your Brain? review for a lowdown.
Kirby: Mouse Attack (Nintendo, €9.99 / £8.99) - Known as 'Squeak Squad' in North America, this gave the DS a more conventional Kirby platformer, albeit with some touch controls thrown in for good measure. Though a little bit on the short side and playing it safe, we gave this one a recommendation in our original Kirby: Mouse Attack review.
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (Nintendo, €9.99 / £8.99) - From those simple times when Nintendo liked to put '64' at the end of titles, or fans would regardless of whether it was supposed to be there, this is a 2D platform rendered in chunky N64 polygons. We'll take another look, but we were disappointed with this in our original review back in 2008.
Wii U Retail Download
Yoshi's Woolly World (Nintendo, €39.99 / £34.99) - The latest cute platformer from Good-Feel, this brings Yoshi and chums into a soft, cuddly environment in which to run and jump. With plenty of amiibo support, co-op, transformations and some delightful moments, this is a platformer that's been on some wishlists since its first conceptual reveal two years ago; we gave it a hearty recommendation in our Yoshi's Woolly World review. Available from 26th June.
Art Academy: Atelier (Nintendo, €29.99 / £24.99 or €26.00 / £21.40 with Art Academy: SketchPad on the same Wii U system) - The first home console Art Academy title, this takes advantage of the sizeable touch screen on the Wii U GamePad to deliver an exceptional drawing experience. There are lessons to help newcomers learn the craft, while online sharing options thankfully step up a notch with YouTube uploads and Miiverse. We gave this a glowing recommendation in our Art Academy: Atelier review. Available from 26th June.
Wii U eShop Promotion - Yoshi's Woolly World
Download Yoshi's Woolly World on the eShop and receive a free code for Yoshi Touch & Go - deal available until 23rd July, code valid until 20th August.

3DS eShop
Tappingo 2 (Goodbye Galaxy Games, €2.99 / £2.39) — The sequel to the popular puzzle game that applies its own take on the genre, applying a spin to Picross-style principles. This new entry features over 100 new puzzles and a welcome zoom option to assist with larger images; we gave this a strong recommendation in our Tappingo 2 review.
3DS Retail Download
Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3 (Koei Tecmo, €39.99 / £29.99) - A surprising localisation in light of the first sequel skipping the West, but nevertheless welcome for fans of Koei's frantic action games that also want a little more strategy. In addition to historical battling this looks set to offer plenty of content, with challenge modes and online rankings among the additional features.
Garfield Kart (Anuman Interactive, €29.99 / £24.99)

Oh wow, they remembered the VC is a thing
Kirby 64 for me.
So jealous! Yoshi's Wooly World needs to come to NA sooner! 😂
Woolly World and transferring kirby 64 from wii mode for me
@ThomasBW84 When does the embargo lift for Yoshi's Woolly World, I want it but I'm interested in how you guys will review it.
@Jazzer94 I technically can't say, but very very soon!
Quite a good week, if I was in search of something new to play I would have quite some options there!
I'm a bit angry however with NoE, Tecmo or whoever is to blame for how quietly Samurai 3 release is sneaking around. I completly forgot the game even existed until I saw it last week popping on the eShop. It would have been probably a must buy for me, but I just recovered Orochi 3; two warriors games at the same time would be too overwhelming >.>;
I have Yoshi's Woolly World coming via the Nintendo UK Online Store so I voted Kirby 64 (upgrading from Wii VC). I'll also redownload Brain Training assuming it's free.
@ThomasBW84 Ah ok, well I look forward to reading it when it is published have feeling this one will be a gem.
Very pleased that the most recent retail games, Yoshi and Splatoon have been £35. Great price!
YWW has been preordered for some time, yay! (of course who knows if it will arrive)
Oh, there goes my bank balance. Have Woolly World on pre-order, and will be getting both Kirby games.
Kirby 64 methinks since I've never actually played it for some strange reason.
Might grab Tappingo 2 at some point as well since I found the first one surprisingly entertaining.
wheres the bloomin vc console games for the 3ds?????? nintendo really dont give a crap anymore, only sega that bothers with the 3ds and the classic sega games, its like nintendo dont want to make easy money
Already have Yoshi's Woolly World on pre-order bundled with the Plush Yoshi Amiibo, my Fiancé is so happy. apart from that, I'll wait till next week.
Whoah Wooly World for only 40€? I thought it'll be 50€. Yiiiipeeee!!!
Whats up with all that DLC for SWC3?
That much DLC makes me not want to buy the game.
74,91€ minimum for all DLC is a lot. even tho i gues most of it is just cosmetic stuff and the scenario pack is the only thing gameplay related.
As usual online retailers are discounting Wii U games even further. Got my YWW pre-order for £25. It's the sort of game I'd have waited for a price cut on but that price works for me.
KIBRY64!?
oh i hope thats comes to NA!
I have Yoshi's Wooly World pre ordered too, really tempted to get the new Samurai Warriors game but the price of all that dlc puts me off..
Definitely buying Kirby 64. Awesome game!
Yoshi WW is actually 44€ boxed on Amazon.it. Honestly I don't think that saving 4€ is worth it in this case.
But what if you already have touch and go and no Yoshi Story this week dammit I owe my friend £5 Dam you Nintendo not as predictable as I thought......."Clever Girl!"
...
I'll leave a comment next time when AVGN Adventures arrives.
@anders190 It's already been released on the eshop, was released a month ago.
@Jazzer94 me too. I recently started Epic Yarn again, but this just looks like great fun and visual bliss to boot. Really looking forward to co-op with my eldest daughter on this!
I have Yoshi's Woolly World preordered, I'm away on Thursday though so it'll be a week before I get my grubby hands on it! I've been looking forward to it since the first screenshots in ONM. My nephew is interested in that Minecraft inspired game, don't think he's ever played Minecraft but he loves watching it on YouTube. I... just don't get that lol
Cube Life for me
Peroreded YWW also. Can't wait, hope it's good but it looks good so I'm happy out with that.
Kirby ds and yoshi ds, worth a punt?
Any news on Attack on Titan?
Garfield Kart ?!? No thanks, i'll wait for Garfield Party or Garfield Smash...
Paper Monsters Recut
Stick It To The Man
cheap and nice
I'll get the physical version of Yoshi's Woolly World. Good to see Kirby 64 is on VC as well. It's a pretty good Kirby game, one of my favourite.
When is Cube Creator 3D gonna be released in Europe?
should be soon now surely???
Ooooof art academy is expensive. I hoped it'd be around £10-15. I may just stick to the normal one without lessons
SO MUCH SAMURIO WARRIORS DLC!!!!!
That DLC seems excessive.
Already no interest in the game but if I was, that'd almost put me off.
Oh my, Koei is back to "more DLC than game" mode. Over 70€ for DLC is ridiculous, even if it's mostly cosmetic stuff.
My word that's an insane mountain of Samurai Warriors 3 DLC. O_O'
I don't know so please tell me... Is Samurai Warriors worth the full 105 euro??? With that price tag it has to be the best 3DS game ever, right?
Is there anyone actually purchasing all the day 1 DLC, i wonder...
I know there's lots of exciting firstly party games this week, but Stick it to the Man is really good. It was free on ps+ a while back so really recommend it! Support the indie devs!
Ahhh, so jealous! I really want Wooly World, but we have to wait for another 4 months...
Kirby 64, and maybe Squeak Squad.
I've just ordered Art Academy Atelier (just missing Pokemon Art Academy from having a complete AA set now) and had Yoshi's Woolly World with the amiibo ordered for ages.
@ThomasBW84 - Technically, or legally? If it's technical I find that switching to digital can help.
Are those considered budget prices for Yoshi or is that full retail? (b/c Splatoon)
Amazon US has it $60 MSRP but selling for $50. Of course they also still have the filler date of Dec 31st, somebody should tell them E3 happened, though I suppose they are being a proper business and waiting for the supplier to officially supply them with the date?
We're getting it either way, my kids can play together and I'll play w/ my wife, but Oct 16th puts it into "wait for Santa" territory so I'm not sure if it's day 1. Probably depends on if we get SMM day 1. XCX is Christmas for me, kids usually get Skylanders, not sure what we are doing about Lego D. No shortage of games this holidsy.
Nothing to download for me, but I'll be getting a boxed YWW and my first ever amiibo.
What? Yoshi is only 40 EUR? Why am I paying 60 EUR for the bundle?
Does anyone know where to find a physical copy of Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3 in the UK (or is it digital only)?
Anyway, I'll be too busy this week anyway with Yoshi's Wooly World and Batman Arkham Knight.
@Tsurii Haha, long before my time that review
I've never played it actually, so I'm tempted to give it a whirl.
@rjejr £34.99 seems normal for Wii U retail on the eShop in the UK now, though naturally GAME often flogs them for a fiver more.
I'll pick up art academy and cube life.gonna pick up yoshi at retail gforce usually do a good price.since I just got a 3ds im pretty tempted by the smt is discount as well.
@rjejr £35 is our budget retail, £50 our standard (on eshop)... Physical we can usually get for £25 budget and £35/£40 standard at retail. For £76 you can be a tool like me and buy the triple amiibo YWW pack on the Nintendo UK Online Store. Just hope the fiancée doesn't ever realise how much they cost... Said hers was the pink one and she seemed happy. Still don't know why US got conned on the Splatoon price front.
@McoobabWATP Don't panic if you miss SMT on sale, it's on sale more often than sofas are at DFS (apologies if you're not UK, that reference might go amiss!)
No Atlus, I don't want to buy Shin Megami Tensei 4. Why is it this one in particular that goes on sale so often? Next time just discount etrian oddessy
@manu0 The Wooly Amiibo are retailing for roughly £20, so guess that would explain. I do know some places in UK that do the bundle for £47, but I assume that would be close to same after exchange to euro...
@ShanaUnite As they didn't retail it over here (don't know if that's the case with EO) they aren't undercutting any physical stock sales. Plus they just clearly like to take advantage of sale publicity! I'm gutted, I got it at £11!
This week would have been a perfect time to surprise the fans with something special....Gamecube VC on U or SNES VC on 3DS are just two bleedingly obvious suggestions
Awesome, I was just thinking about buying Stick it to the man. This discount's timing is perfect
@BrizzoUK The yarn amiibo are 15 EUR here, and usually there's a discount when you get the bundle compared to the individual items (e.g. Splatoon w/o amiibo was 40 EUR here and only 45 EUR with it, so esentially I only payed 5 EUR for the amiibo)
I'm getting Wooly World at GAME on Saturday.
Going to give the 2 Kirby games a look, of course.
@BrizzoUK - "Still don't know why US got conned on the Splatoon price front."
B/c in the US online shooter = $60. That's my guess anyway. At least it's turned out to be worth it. And lots more to come it seems. My kids and I will be playing that all summer long since we have to wait until Oct for Yoshi. (Hope they do a good job w/ those Yoshi noises translation in the next 3 1/2 months.)
And I think the EU/UK/US currency fluctuations of late are causing me some trouble keeping track. At least Super Mario Maker seems the same price everywhere.
Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3 for me this week, I've been looking forward to that one, especially since Chronicles 2 never made it outside Japan.
Don't know about the DLC though, kind of a lot and kind of expensive, as it always seems to be the case with Koei Tecmo nowadays. The DLC for Dead or Alive 5: Last Round is just ridiculous.
Nice to see Kirby 64, but think we need an N64 game soon that isnt a platformer. Out of the 4 we have 3 of them are platformers and while Kirby 64 is a 2.5D one, we could do with a bit more variety like a shooter (Starfox, Sin and Punishment), a racer/kart game (Mario Kart 64), fighter (Smash Bros), Party (Erm, Mario Party) or whatever the heck Pokemon Snap is classed as (Miiverse was MEANT for this game!).
Nice also to see Mouse Attack again, quite enjoyed that one back in the day.
Is Garfield Kart really a thing? For €29.99!!! That can't possibly sell, can it? Mario Kart 7 is going for $25...
Yoshi's week is finally here. Can't wait. <3 Of course I'll be getting it retail though. No way am I missing out on those amiibo!
Never played Kirby 64. May give it a shot if it comes to NA.
I've got Yoshi's Woolly World bundle pre ordered from Amazon so I think I'll try out Kirkby 64.
@MikeW It'll be months before it comes to NA. We have not had an N64 title released since the original 3 they said were coming. Don't forget, we still have not had any new Wii games either so don't expect much.
@ThomasBW84 They've actually changed on that front, since Captain Toad all the Wii U releases have been £34.99 instore (at least the December early release of Captain Toad was that price).
@rjejr Yeah that's probably the case, however, UK is online shooter/FIFA only, guessing they couldn't pull that trick as their market share here isn't exactly large!
Haha I'd love for some yoshi with regional accents... Either that or they got that poor woman in the Direct knitting all off the amiibos for launch in both territories (if she makes 1 a day between now and October that'll be enough for NA launch surely).
@rjejr With Splatoon It's also a much wider network to support in NA right? Many more players, I think. And since there is no online fee with Nintendo, those servers have to be paid for... plus maybe you're right we value FPS more.
I agree that it was well worth the cost. Are your kids playing it yet? Mine love the game. My 6-year-old guy is much better at it than I thought he would be and he usually has trouble with "losing" games so the format of short games in the regular battles is really working. When you lose, fair or not, you still get something and you can play again in almost no time. (Of course this all goes away in the much more intense Ranked Battles).
My daughter loves it, too, which is good because it's a birthday gift for her! They loved the testfires and she was really into it so I wasn't just hopeful on that.
For me, it surpassed my expectations and I thought it looked fantastic from the first reveal. So, very happy with Splatoon and it's weird to see it so much lower priced but it's in the charts so it was probably a good move over there. The only downside is I'm sensing this expectation for all of Nintendo's games to be lower priced all of the sudden. Have you noticed that?
@Sinister certainly makes the Smash costume DLC better value
@aaronsullivan I can see where you're coming from, people will say Super Mario Maker is a ripoff when it's something like £44.99.
@manu0 Yeah definitely seems like a lot of price hiking is going on then. Amiibo being rare they know they can do it.
"Nintendo Download: 25th June (Europe) - Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3 DLC Edition!"
@rjejr Yeah there's a lot of new content still to come for Splatoon. Tower Control and Rainmaker modes, at least one more map, and 33 more weapons. Can't forget the matchmaking in August. Wonder if that update will happen on the same day as the tourney mode update for Smash.
@aaronsullivan - "The only downside is I'm sensing this expectation for all of Nintendo's games to be lower priced all of the sudden. Have you noticed that?"
Well they should be lower priced, have you compared graphics between online shooter SW Battlefront and offline single player Starfox? SWB also has like 3 offline couch co-op splitscreen modes - trials, survival and something else. Nobody is confusing an X-wing w/ an airwing. And you yourself said ACaF should be free due to lack of content. SMM, single player, no game, just a level editor. Yoshi offline, but that is worth $60 to me for length and couch co-op. XCX is worth $60, probably $80 if its' even close to XC.
So yeah, I do think a lot of people are jumping onto my bandwagon in search of lower prices for certain Wii U games, but not all. Reasons are twofold - Captain Toad and Kirby were cheaper, putting the idea in peoples heads, and their new games are of seemingly low value compared to the PS4 stuff. Why should anything on Wii U be the same price as Uncharted 4 or COD? Not saying Wii U stuff should be free, but Mario vs Donkey Kong Tipping Stars - a 2D game w/ a built in level editor - was $20 for both the Wii U and 3DS versions. Why pay $60 for SMM only on Wii U?
And why is Lego City Undercover still $50 on the eShop, that price point ship has sailed.
https://checkout.nintendo.com/#/item/WUPNAPLE/billing
SMM should have couch co-op, Starfox should have online co-op. There are games that look like $60, but some don't.
@rjejr ACaF is free digitally, the expensive part is rare amiibo
@Sinister That's pretty standard fare for Warriors games as of late. It's nice in the sense that it's definitely not required, and you can pick something up if you really want it. Definitely not the place to be a completionist, though. Gets way too expensive.
@Grumblevolcano - And 80% of those amiibo will never play the game, just sit on shelves. Might have been better if they made a $40 real Wii U AC and then added on the amiibo.
But what do they care, all their amiibo will sell out, no warehouse storage costs. Everybody always leaves those warehouse storage costs out of the equation, I think they just make as many as they can fit on a truck and ship straight from the manufacture. Dealing w/ 10 million amiibo that has to be a significant savings.
@BrizzoUK haha no I'm from glasgow so I got the reference lol.cool I only got the handheld about a week ago so was thinking I might've been missing out on some rare deal.
Tappingo 2 for me. Finally 👍
@SanderEvers it has lessons too though. only reason I pre-ordered it here.
Big fan of it, got a HD for it too LOL
@Grumblevolcano the games made for scalpers only(Tm)
@McoobabWATP is a very good game though, if you enjoy a tough rpg, just no need to rush!
Ummm......Samurai Warriors 3 for 39.99 then what looks to be 68.00 dollars in DLC? Am I dreaming that? This is the kind of stuff that is ruining gaming! KOEI you have lost a customer. No thank you! I won't be buying if that comes to North America. Shame too I really liked that first Samurai Warriors. What do you get for 39.99, a demo?
First day the game release! You have got to be kidding me! Do this with Hyrule Warriors and Im not buying that either! This sucks! You just know that they are going to do Hyrule Warriors on 3ds the same way.
@rjejr yeah I've noticed that Undercover never gets a sale when other Lego games are 14.99 on sales
That`s a lot of day 1 DLC....
Kirby 64!!! YAY
@Windy They won't because this nature of DLC has been present way before Hyrule Warriors Wii U existed. Even if they wanted it, Aonuma wouldn't let it happen.
Only completists with more cents than sense would download ALL of a game's available DLC. Normal people just download the few that they want, if any at all.
Already have Kirby Mouse Attack on DS (ridiculous name, BTW...they should have gone with Squeak Squad like the US) and Kirby 64 on Wii VC...might upgrade Kirby 64 at some point.
Getting a physical copy of Yoshi's Wooly World with the 3 different coloured Yarn Yoshi amiibos...that's about as much as my wallet can handle for now. I've even had to sacrifice getting Batman Arkham Knight this week because of it.
Getting Woolly World with a single yarn amiibo (blue). Seem to be able to find game-only deals for a very reasonable price if there are also amiibo to go with it - it seems to be the amiibo that are making money (and pushing up the cost to twice that of the game alone). Only really special amiibo getting my purchase then.
Also getting Affordable Space Adventures at some point, but waiting on a discount.
I'm not really seeing what's so awesome about Yoshi's Woolly World, so nothing for me this week.
Im so buying Kirby 64 as so as i can, and ill be picking up yoshi wolly world later on
All I can say is...
Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town???
All the people worried about the dlc for samurai warriors don't need to. I have Samurai Warriors 4 on my PS account and have had an absolute blast with the game without even considering any of the pages worth of dlc content. I don't think it really adds anything to the game unless you MUST have every little costume available.
@ThomasBW84 There is no physical retail copies of Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3. 😭
@Chubblings I can't find anywhere .. There is a small statement on a Koei Facebook page that says it is download only .... I am gutted.. Especially as Japan got the beautiful box set with artwork and soundtrack cd.
Yoshi's woolly world retail for me with the three amiibo!
I have just picked up The Wind Waker edt Wii U so I will defo be picking Stick it to the man as I played this on a friends PS4 and was instantly hooked.
YWW will be a physical purchase for me along with wooly amiibo.
Shiftlings sounds promising, but waiting for a review with more info.
Yoshi's Woolly World seems to be cheaper in eshop than in local stores so i'm going to download it. Great price.
Would get Yoshi's Wooly World but I already have the physical copy on pre-order (along with the Amiibos). So it'll probably be Shiftlings, if the review is favourable.
@Chubblings Cex will have it or eBay it normally sells for £5-£8
Blimey a game from Sierra! I am going to have to give Shiftlings a whirl. Please be good, please be good please be good....
