With the New Nintendo 3DS landing on 13th February, the obvious comparison is with the DSi, which kicked off a final hurrah for the DS family before it was replaced. Considering the relatively ageing technology of the 3DS family the New models will likely add a couple of years to the generation, so naturally thoughts turn to what's 'next'.
With Nintendo it can be fiendishly difficulty to predict what's coming, with each new console throwing up a surprise or two; with the Quality of Life product line also in development it's even difficult to interpret whether technology plans are even related to gaming hardware, as with a deal to use Sharp's 'free form' LCD screen technology. When given scope to speculate and dream, however, a variety of ideas come to the surface.
A large list of developers have considered what they'd want to see in Nintendo's next portable in an article on Dromble, with quite a variety of outcomes. We've picked a few examples that caught our eye for your consideration below.
Lorne Lanning — Oddworld Inhabitants (Creator of the "Oddworld" series)
I could see Nintendo adapting a more open platform mobile OS (I.e. Android) and improving upon its capabilities in the premium gaming specific areas. This would allow them to benefit from all of the connected, social, and service benefits (for free) while allowing their special focus to take the OS to new levels in AAA mobile gaming.
Jason Canam — Drinkbox Studios (Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition)
I think a next-gen handheld is a good place for Nintendo to improve on their network and user account systems. Having handhelds and consoles on a unified account system that eases and encourages the use of both platforms together would be a huge improvement. And the template already exists, what Sony has done with the PlayStation Network and how the Vita and the PS3/PS4 work together is a great starting point. It's nice to see that Nintendo is "baby-stepping" their way along this path, with Mario vs Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars being cross-buy for Wii U and 3DS. I'd love to see all Virtual Console games go cross-buy & cross-play, as a standard.
Nintendo is only behind in the technological sense, as they've been making fun handheld-console interconnected experiences for a long time. The GameCube and the GameBoy Advance had some really interesting and unique gameplay features over a decade ago. The problem was having to find connection cables… which doesn't sound like a huge deal, but I'm sure it kept most players from trying out games like Pac-Man Vs. (one of the most fun games ever), Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles or even trying out the Tingle Tuner in Wind Waker. Removing the barrier of needing extra peripherals and cables and streamlining the network to make connecting your handheld to your console much easier will allow Nintendo to make some pretty cool stuff.I remember when Metroid Prime (GCN) and Metroid Fusion (GBA) came out on the same day. My mind can't even handle thinking about what would happen if a next-gen console Metroid game and a next-gen handheld Metroid game launched on the same day… and the games interacted together in a really deep & meaningful way. I'd love to see (or develop!) that.
Tim Dawson — Witch Beam (Assault Android Cactus)
As a consumer I worry about battery life but as a developer what I want is improved development tools. Nintendo has made great strides opening up the eShop to small and indie developers, and the Wii U supports Unity and other game engines that small teams use. It would be great to see their next generation handheld follow this trajectory.
Expanded online integration, both in terms of the way downloadable games are discovered and played, is also something that'd be appreciated. In terms of hardware, I want to see Nintendo be bold again – they've already committed to hardware that prevents simple ports, so rather than standardizing control schemes and resolutions, I want them to go all in and do something that allows games that can't be thought of yet.
Kynan Pearson — Creative Director at Bluepoint Games
I'll be buying Nintendo's next handheld regardless of new features or functionality because I have had great experiences with Nintendo's portable systems and software and I can't imagine that changing.
I would really like to see Nintendo work towards unifying their home console and handheld platforms. In the most basic terms, I hope that anything I purchase on their next handheld can be played on the console with a single purchase. (Cross play/cross buy/cross save).
I'd love to see their next handheld include a console mode option allowing you to play games on the go or push the output to your big screen TV when playing at home. Ever since I first saw the Wii U Gamepad and the Wii U hardware, I was hoping you'd be able to take the Gamepad on the go. I know there are technical limitations that may prevent this from being possible, but I would have loved to see a new Nintendo handheld take the form of a smaller, improved Wii U Gamepad with the Wii U hardware built in so you could just play Wii U games while you travel.
That being said, I think their new console needs a new iconic name and identity that doesn't rely on the Wii or DS branding. It would be great if they chose to simply call it "the Nintendo" or something else that won't get confused with earlier systems. Nintendo tends to incorporate radical new ideas or gimmicks in their hardware so I fully expect to be surprised by an aspect of the next handheld.
James Montagna — Director/Designer at WayForward
It's easy to get caught up in technical aspects of what Nintendo's next handheld could be… but that's not really how Nintendo rolls, is it? This is a completely blind guess, but I hope I'm not far off in theorizing that Nintendo's future is as sleek as it is playful. Picture something with the look of a slim Wii U GamePad, in a variety of bold colors. A handheld that fits into every lifestyle, made to be as ubiquitous as a phone or tablet, but filling a unique role in a way neither of those devices can.
Perhaps what sets it apart is a great emphasis on social play. People gather in circles at parties, conventions, and restaurant tables to play together. All instantly connected by their proximity! Short burst sessions, seamless switching of games. Imagine a Pokémon trade followed by a quick round of Super Smash Bros., all before the train reaches its stop. Entirely new play styles could emerge if the handhelds detect the position and motion of others nearby. Visions of a couple playing some sort of AR ball-volleying game in real space between their two devices, which function as paddles. It's a party happening all around you, and having Nintendo's new handheld means you're invited.
There are some interesting ideas, some of which have no doubt previous done the rounds in wistful chats between Nintendo fans around the world - we ourselves did a little speculating on the topic last year. Part of the beauty with Nintendo is that, frankly, it's exceptionally hard to predict what it'll do next.
We recommend checking out the Dromble article linked below for the full version and more ideas from developers, and we're interested - as always - in what you think of these suggestions.

I'd personally like something that would let you play Games on your Hand Held & the TV Wirelessly or through a Cable somehow. Or both.
I just want something that can fit in my pocket and play my DS and 3DS games on, along with more Virtual console games! (And a more sturdy Circle Pad!)
@Robo-Knight totally agree!!
kinda boring tbh. they don't say much besides better account system / crossbuy.
no words about real innovative features like the touchscreen was on the DS or the glasses free 3D on the 3DS. yes i know some people think 3D is just a gimmck but i think it is amazing and makes games way more beautiful
I think it's more what Nintendo makes, the devs have to work with, sadly. That's all I see anyway. Their way or the other systems . Hopefully that will change in the next Nintendo gen.
I would be happy with just a more powerful 3DS. I hope they stick with the 3D screen, at least.
"I could see Nintendo adapting a more open platform mobile OS (I.e. Android)"
That's stupid. Nintendo wont use an open OS and let it be wide open to any john doe with a computer. Not even the other companies do that, why should Nintendo would?
"My mind can't even handle thinking about what would happen if a next-gen console Metroid game and a next-gen handheld Metroid game launched on the same day"
Nothing. Metroid is a niche franchise for Nintendo fans. it is not a mainstream game and it sells would be amazing.
Dual screen (clamshell design), 3D, HD, normal dual analog sticks / circle pads (no tiny little nubs please)... and it should be called the Nintendo 3DS Advance
I would like to see a one screen handheld device with touch, much like the vita. The 3D effect could be spared IMO. It all comes down to the games for me really..
I just hope its not a smartphone.
My wish list for 3ds/new 3ds replacement
1.clamshell like ds and gba sp
2.480p top screen At least 4 in to 5 in
3.480p bottom screen must be captive touch
4.about as powerful as the wii u or more
5.hdmi or av port for tv gameplay
6.micro usb port for charging
7.at least 4 gb internal and 4 gb micro sd card expandable up to 128 gb micro sd card
8.nfc compatible with amiibo support
9.great launch games
10. To keep 3d on top screen
@Goginho That'd be great, but... how would real analog sticks work on a clamshell design?
@schizor I wouldn't want the next handheld to only have one screen; two screens is great for RPGs and stuff.
"I could see Nintendo adapting a more open platform mobile OS (I.e. Android)"
I don't think there is a single thing in the world less likely to happen.
I think what the next-gen nintendo handheld should have is..
and thats about it.
-Keep the 3D diplay
-Should be at least 720p (1080p preferred)
-Sharp's Free Form technology would be awesome
-3D movies! (3D Netflix?)
-More apps like Spotify
-amiibo support
-StreetPass
I would be so happy with all of that!
HD 720p
YouTube that is watchable. Twitch App.
Replace C-Stick for another Analogue Slider and use Free Form screen (if available in touch screen) on the bottom to keep system small enough to still compete with smartphones in the 'portable' market.
Could really use an angle lock between the 1st and 2nd, for the top screen.
That's all I need atm.
Oh.. and some Themes that are appealing for someone who isn't 5yrs old.
And for the hell of it.. Solar Panel strips along the internal edges. Bluetooth connectivity with QoL watch.
>chose to simply call it "the Nintendo" or something else that won't get confused with earlier systems
I can't be the only one that heard the NES called "The Nintendo". My mom calls my Ds (and 3ds) a nintendo too
LOL @ open OS. Pigs will fly too.
Everything else sounds fine though. I too want better interconnectivity, local play, network features, account systems, etc, as well as better tools for developers. I like the way Jason Canam, Tim Dawson, and James Montagna think.
Integrate.
THIS. Back when I would pretend design Nintendo's next handheld, I made it so that it would have 4D... or at least improved technology capable of being interacted with, like with a finger or something. Of course, I imagined every bit of the console and called it.... the Nintendo 3DSpro.
I'll be getting a new 3ds on launch day, so whenever the next handheld hits the market I'll take my time getting it. I don't regret my 3ds purchase,but It was a long wait getting a decent library of Digital/retail games.All I had to play for months after launch was ssf4.Since this gen I'm kinda sour on the whole early adopter thing.
As long as it's small enough for me to fit in my pocket I'll buy it.
The only must have for me is a way better processor and hardware. A better battery life would be a plus though.
Improved graphics are a given, though 1080p is probably a stretch for the next handheld.
3D gimmicks and others are interesting, but not essential.
..oh, and have a standard size model for release
If I read some of those devs, I really think they should just go to the Android and OS market place and stay there. Do we really need a handheld that acts like a smartphone when almost everyone has already a smartphone or tablet? Stop mixing together that doesn't belong together, it just don't fit.
As for me, I stick with James Montagna and hope that Nintendo will bring a good handheld just like the 3DS and 2DS (haven't tried the New 3DS, but I guess next to a faster CPU and the second stick, it won't difference a lot). But since I was and still am satisfied with my 3DS so far and with any handheld before (minus the VR Boy, never had the favor to try it), I'm pretty sure that I will be happy with the next gen for sure.
But that's my two coins.
It's really simple - the next version of the 3DS and Wii U needs to be a single platform. Basically the 2 systems as they exist today, but they are cross compatible. That is, the Wii U gamepad has a slot for 3DS games, and the 3DS can be used in place of the gamepad as a Wii U controller or for off tv play or as a 3DS system. The consumer has a choice to buy a Wii U, gamepad, and/or 3DS, or bundles with different combinations.
Not sure why but James Montagna's idea sounds the most captivating to me. That sounds like a great idea that could potentially work, and sounds like something Nintendo would try.
@BarryDunne I'm one of those older gamers and I'd love to see the gameboy line return!
@KyleJ39 @Goginho @enamiiz
HD on the go is NOT good for prices! Those things would be $550 at least.
@JakeOfAllTrades I'm sure the cost to put in a 720p screen will be low enough by the time the new handheld is being manufactured. Anything is better than the 240p screen we have now.
@IxC Actually, Iwata has said they are planning to do just that. They are planning on implementing a universal OS similar to iOS and Android in their next gen systems.
Nintendo Handheld System (NHS) calling it right now!
I really like the ideas of James Montagna, I hope the next handheld is a bit like that but with 2 screens
They all had good ideas, but Montagna's sound pretty close, or perhaps closest to what Nintendo probably would do, if they did any of the above 4 suggestions. Pearson's idea of cross-platform is great. Dawson's battery life, & continually expanded dev tools ideas are great. Canam's suggestion of accounts would be just fine, if properly implemented.
Canam's right about the connectivity wires, they caused me a lot of grief trying to connect a GBA to a GCN/NGC GBP for e-Reader, & Metroid Fusion/Prime uses. Removing the cables that can get damaged from storing them in a neat wrap(figure 8) guarantees, or at least much better secures the ability to use connectivity functionality far into a handheld's lifespan.
Also, I don't imagine Nintendo will make 1 device that is both console, & handheld. I think they like having 2 systems, for financial failsafe, in case 1 suffers, or falls on hard times, like the WU at the moment.
I say Nintendo should keep the 3d top screen, & bottom touch screen concept, 2 circle pads(left, & right), enough buttons to be used as a controller w/ the next console. 2 size screens available at launch.
As for an os, the 2 sharing an os can have pros, & cons. I think the best route is, & I can't believe I'm saying this by nature alone of my low views of the os, a Windows 8 styled approach: make the os have 2 major components(console, & handheld), & those 2 major components, have similar smaller components that can easily interface w/ one another. That way, both console, & handheld share the same os architecture , but not exactly. This "not exactly" should be there b/c of exploits in one, being possible on the other. The 2 being slightly different helps, but does not prevent, cross exploits.
I think the next gen console should be called the "NEW' NES or NGM Nintendo gaming machine. keep it simple and have the Nintendo name be a large part of the concept. make it retro looking like the original NES
@Mus1cLov3r actual thumbsticks could work just fine with a clamshell design, just think of recessed indents on either side of the top screen to house them when the system is closed. I could see it working just fine, especially if they are about the size of the sticks on the PSVita.
They can call it DSVita.
i hope its either a holographic system (they will be in smartphones later this year anyway), or a wearable new virtual boy type thing.
I actually hate analogs like the Vita has. I think the 3DS analog is miles above those uncomfortable little nipple sticks on Vita. I get a much better response and range from the 3DS analog- and it's more comfortable too.
I hope we get dual analog (or analog + C-stick is totally fine too, just so long as there's a standard inclusion to control camera-focused games, and I think there will be considering new3DS- I doubt Nintendo will strip AWAY features for the next handheld when they usually build upon them). I also hope it's dual screen again with a 3DS card slot and 3D. And they could just go qHD like Vita did and call it the HDS. Simple and catchy, right to the point.
Whatever it ends up being I will be there, day one, to get my system. In 20+ years of playing games I've never owned Nintendo hardware I regretted buying, and I don't think that's going to change any time soon.
Oh, & infrared communications port, like the GBC had. & one other thing I keep telling Nintendo in CN surveys about the VC - to make their emulators take full advantage of the full capabilities of the system(handheld, & console). Most, if not all official peripherals from past(legacy) Nintendo systems can be done w/ the technological capabilities of modern gaming systems, having high processing power, the proper inputs for peripherals, etc. The SNes mouse for instance, can easily be emulated by a Wiimote, or the GP(Gamepad).
You should probably give Emily Rogers author credit; Dromble is just where her work gets posted. It's her that comes up with these great articles that provide insight to how Nintendo works behind the scenes, and what developers want out of them.
Personally I'd love for them to have something with at least the power of a 2014 mobile device, so that they could support every modern API and feature set. Make things easier for the developers, you know?
But, I could totally see them going for 2012-2013 level tech to reduce costs. Maybe use low-power, budget CPU cores such as the Cortex A7 like Chinese companies tend to use for low end phones. Whatever it is, it'll probably be equal to the nVidia Shield Portable, or a bit weaker.
At least it'll probably be a little stronger than the Vita overall and support 7th gen engines such as Unreal Engine 3. Would fit perfectly with how Nintendo usually designs their handhelds.
Then they could use the money they saved skimping on hardware specs towards new ways to experience games. Perhaps more than 2 screens, but with two main screens (like DS and 3DS) and multiple smaller and different shaped auxiliary screens for additional things to display. Maybe even toss in some hologram tech and improved AR functionality.
@Mus1cLov3r
It would work if you made the handheld massive like the Shield , but....that's not really an option for Nintendo....
@AVahne: "Would fit perfectly with how Nintendo usually designs their handhelds. " Probably would go well w/ Nintendo's concept of using older hardware.
@Capt_N
Aye, don't remember what the philosophy was exactly, but it was something like taking older hardware and making the most out of it right?
@VeeFlamesNL @WaveBoy
4D? People... let's get a better grasp of how the dimensions work...
...unless you wish the next gen of handheld consoles to interact with the fabric of time, then I'm ALL for that.
@Isadais
I agree. The 3D display gets a lot of hate but I freakin' love it...to the point where sometimes when I'm playing Wii U or something I find myself thinking, "it's a shame that this isn't in 3D cause it would look so much cooler!".
I'm totally all for brand new innovations for a system and agree that the DS family has had a good run...but I just don't want it to end! It seems the 3DS just came out! It still has a few good years ahead but that will go by real quick.
Just make a portable Wii U, called the 'DS U', and let it be backward compatible with Wii U eShop retail games. I would love to play games like Splatoon and MK8 on the go. It should be able to hook up to a TV as well, so finally we can play a proper Pokémon game on a TV.
Man...this next system could go anywhere...you never know what Nintendo has up their sleeve. However, it should be noted that Nintendo has actually patented the concept of interacting with 3D images on the top screen using a sensor on the tip of the stylus and the inner cameras. I know a patent doesn't really mean much but it's interesting to note what they are storing away (like the Sharp screen technology).
Realistically though, I am hoping Nintendo can step up their game with the power. In my opinion, their games have always been superior to Sony or Microsoft anyway, but they have always gone the weaker-power route (probably to have lower prices to make their systems more affordable for kids and families). I think it's time to ask for a bit more cash from its fans and make a machine that rivals the others in the competition. Fast CPU/GPU out of the gate, HD display (720p would be fine since any higher would push up the price too much), good internet and social media connectivity, better sound and volume cap, better battery life, etc. etc.
I do hope they keep the 3D display but I'm thinking they won't. I think back in 2008-20009 they predicted that's where the trend was going (and it kinda was) but 3D kinda died out again in the public's eyes so I think it will be gone. I hope they don't get rid of the duel-screen clam shell design either as it is pretty much perfected at this point (if it's not broke, don't fix it).
In the end though...my ultimate desire is that nintendo fixes the mistake the made with the 3DS. The same problem they promised they wouldn't repeat for the Wii U and then did again anyway...HAVE GOOD GAMES ON LAUNCH DAY. It can be fun and interesting to see what the system is like, but in the end, the core selling point never fails: games. You can have the coolest looking restaurant on the planet but if the food sucks, nobody will come. Same concept. And I think they have been hit with it enough now to fix it for the next round.
Oh...one more big one...the cameras need to be GREATLY improved. Having inner and outer cameras is a brilliant addition to hardware that opens up a TON of possibilities that I believe are still underutilized. But I seriously think it's completely realistic to ask for an inner/outer camera that's AT LEAST 5mp...if not something like 8mp. I mean...it will be something like 2018 when this thing comes out...please don't give us another system with 0.3mp...
@invictus4000 Yeah, All other screens I come into contact with disappoint me, because they are not 3DS screens haha. I often fantasize about what a HD 3DS screen would look like.
@JaxonH I actually feel the opposite way. The only consoles I've ever owned are Nintendo's. And I've always been really frustrated with the lack of third party. And I hated that you couldn't download Wii games due to the extremely small Wii storage space. It would've definitely helped me lose a lot less of my games. They're starting to be able to let you download some with the Wii U and I appreciate that, but that came way too late. Should've been there last gen. Also, Nintendo's decisions also really get on my nerves like how they did not include HD in the Wii and no universal account system yet. Back in 2013 (which was when that painful Wii U drought was happening) I swear I was seriously considering selling my Wii U. I only stuck around because I knew that games like Smash and Mario Kart would come around eventually. That's actually the only reason I stick around with Nintendo at all these days. They're games just keep bringing me back to them. I manage to deal with all of the problems and issues I have with them cause they give me stuff like Zelda and Mario. I do plan on eventually getting a gaming PC to cover the lack of third party but as for everything else, I'm really hoping they fix these problems. It's just really frustrating and it's almost to the point where I'm ready to give up on them entirely. I used to be all over Nintendo consoles and always wanted to buy them so badly (I got my Wii U day one) but now I've pretty much made up my mind that if the next console doesn't fix the problems that I might have to avoid it. Definitely not getting it day one. Made that mistake with the Wii U... However the handhelds seem fine. I love the 3DS a lot. If I actually do give up on Nintendo consoles, I think I might just stick with their handheld and use a PC as my main system for gaming.
Built in 4G, for on the go multi player. I like the name Game boy to return.
@andrew20 480p in this day and era really?
Farewell, Nintendo home console. It's been nice playing you.
I think nintendo have got a difficult job on their hands here, the new 3ds is practically the pinnacle of handheld gaming, its literally got just about everything aside from higher resolution screens and maybe a bit more oomph under the hood. They have taken what they learned with ds/ds lite/dsi/dsi-xl/3ds/3ds-xl and got us to this new 3ds. I think this will be the end of the ds line of consoles much like the gameboy wrapped up eventually after the sp.
I expect to see nintendo move in a new direction now so it will be interesting to see what they have in store, a handheld that hooks up to the tv doesnt seem unlikely to me.
@Superstick
Guess none of that stuff ever bothers me. Droughts come and go. Spent 9 months on Wii U playing only New Super Mario Bros U, NintendoLand, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and ZombiU, spent 8 months on PS4 playing a Tomb Raider port and Infamous, practically a year on 3DS playing just Street Fighter and Zelda, and 3 months on Xbox One without a single game (bought it in June).
I'm relatively easy to please as far as games go. I buy a console, and to me it's a long term investment where each game is a blessing. I don't get upset over anything really. I just like to play games. Nintendo makes most of my favorite gamest so I'm happy. Yeah there's stuff I could complain about but that goes for all 3 consoles, and to me that stuff just isn't worth getting bent out of shape over. As long as I can come home each day and fire up my Gamepad to play Fire Emblem after work, or Metroid Prime Trilogy, or DKC Tropical Freeze, or whatever it is I'm in the mood to play, I'm good.
Like, I haven't touched my PS4 since Dragon Age and probably won't until Final Fantasy Type 0. And that's totally ok with me. It's there for when a good game comes along. I don't have to have new games I want to play releasing every single week. Usually there's only about 8-10 games I actually want to play on each console every year, and between them all it makes for a nice robust and varied lineup.
But anyways, ya, I guess I just don't let the little stuff bother me. Certainly not enough to ever sell my console. If I did, I wouldn't have any console cause all 3 do stuff that I don't like. But at the end of the day, as long as I can come home and fire up a game, Im good.
Come on chaps, a hdmi port is Humongous and would take up way to much space!
Wifi/bluetooth streaming is where it's at! Chromecast style!
@JaxonH "Usually there's only about 8-10 games I actually want to play on each console every year, and between them all it makes for a nice robust and varied lineup."
There's the key point, multiple consoles. Sticking to only Nintendo this generation isn't as feasible as it used to be in previous generations. It's all about the process of either checking out the current competition (XB1/PS4/PC) or looking back to the past (e.g. GC/N64/PS3/360).
@Grumblevolcano
Well right, but, I do get more out of my Nintendo consoles than any other. So it's not so much a Nintendo issue as it is a gaming issue in general. But IMO, if you're going to go with just a single console, Wii U is the way to go.
Just one of those situations where every console has something to offer. But none offer everything. But I do think Nintendo offers the most.
@JaxonH I'd say the New 3DS XL would be a better choice for only one console though it's clear that in both cases there are plenty of genres that are pretty much ignored so if you want to experience those then other consoles are the way to go (RPG and shooters are the big ones that come to mind).
The 3DS NEXT has to have TWO inner high resolution cameras.
The selfie craze needs to be capitalised on.
Surely the ability to show ones face and head in 3D is useful for real-to-life Miis, for 3DS video chat, for avatar creation, for virtual makeup or hairstyling or cosmetic surgery, and for manga-fication.
If these images could be exported to 3D printing, either locally or by online mail order, then personalised amiibos or caricatures could become all the rage.
The 3d cameras on the 3DS are a great idea but poorly implemented so far.
"I could see Nintendo adapting a more open platform mobile OS (I.e. Android) "
then why not put your certin games on that? why does nintendo have fallow what android or other mobiles have to do? huh?
@JakeOfAllTrades Naw man, it'll be fine considering technology cheapens as it advances. Just look at TVs for example, and how the prices changed over time, especially in the past decade or so; full HD, ultra HD...4K... I think by the time the next handheld system from Nintendo rolls out, the prices will be reasonable for it to be in HD. It's just a natural progression imo, just how the Wii U did it. The Wii was the only system not in HD during its gen, and now where HD became a standard in nearly all homes they bring out a HD console, which has a pretty attractive price tbh (the GamePad is what gives it that noticeable extra bit of weight on the price tag, I would say).
@Mus1cLov3r I guess I meant circle pads basically the thing we have on the 3DS now, whatever the specific term may be. It would be nice having two of those, placed symmetrically on the same axis if possible, and not some extra little nub that the New 3DS has (which is fine, but a normal one like the one on the left would be better imo).
@Grumblevolcano
Yeah 3DS is good too. 3DS is missing shooters (Ironfall looks good though) but has plenty RPGs now, especially once SMT Devil Survivor and Xenoblade drop. Hopefully the newly announced Langrisser also gets localized.
I also notice shooters are MIA on handhelds in general. Other than Killzone and Unit 13, Vita doesn't really have any either. I don't think they're a good fit for handhelds personally. Then again, it might just have to do with the target base. I'm not sure a whole lot of handheld gamers like to play shooters. I don't really like them myself, except on rare occasion.
Stop reading at "android OS"
Thats stupid
What the 3DS successor should be is not just a beefed up 3DS. Yes it should have HD and other nice little things, but it should be revolutionary, something to capture the imagination and excite gamers.
People wanting a 3DS but a bit better and a few tweaks here and there are setting their expectations way to low, in my opinion.
"With the New Nintendo 3DS landing on 13th February, the obvious comparison is with the DSi, which kicked off a final hurrah for the DS family before it was replaced."
Really?
Unlike the DSi which only have of the shelve componant replacement the New 3DS Is infact a new system which have faster proccessing.
The fact the N3DS being more faster is than a 3DS is more akain comparasion between the DS line vs the 3DS.
Lorne Lanning and Jason Canam had the best ideas. I would love to see this type of integration in the next Nintendo handheld.
hmm i don't know if its really about changing the style of the console it self or having 3D or not. I just think they need to improve software wise and im not talking about just games. I feel like the tech is there but if you stop and think how the 3ds acts in japan and how they use it for small things like buying train tickets VS what the rest of the world has. It's stuff like that or having social apps that even if you don't want to admit it, it would be nice to have like netflix etc
As for games wise i feel like we are still missing those in depth games that we still don't have like the starfox, metroid etc games (or new games like splatoon). If they could bring us more games like those that would make the console even more a must have and less using those smartphones. In the end you have to remember who's attention they would want to get and sale to as well as whats popular .
And last the name they have to get a good name for the console/s and actually market it right -__-
Above all: able to stream BOTH Wii U screens at once on a handheld. I'd love playing Zombi U under the covers.
@AshFoxX Eh, I wouldn't want a big indention on my system. :/
@Avahne You mean... Captain America's shield?
@Goginho Sorry... When you said "normal dual analog sticks," I thought you were saying that the 3DS circle pads weren't good enough.
@DarkNinja9 Netflix is already on the 3DS.
Also, the 3DS has many must-haves.
@minotaurgamer Nintendo's fork of the Android OS (AOSP) would not be any more open than is Amazon's Fire OS, which is just a souped up fork of Android. In personal conversations, I have suggested that this may be the way forward for Nintendo as well. They could have access to a lot of social and web services at no cost and be able to lock down the OS to only access the Nintendo eShop as the app store.
Well, I hope they will have backward comparability. I love that with the 3DS and the Wii U. They have so many great games on DS, Wii, 3DS and Wii U. Don't let them dust away. Sony made a terrible choice for the PS4, because I would have bought one if I could play PS3 games on it, but I can't and then my entire interest just died.
I also hope that they don't make their next console a phone. A tablet or a gaming console maybe even with android or iOS support would be okay.
The portable console and home console working together as one, sounds like an interesting idea.
I also hope they will have more online support, so it would be easier to play online and create online games for other developers. Maybe even optional 4G support and better web browsers. 4G support can make sense on a portable console.
I hope they will choose to have a higher resolution screen and a more powerful system next time. I'm not the tech obsessed kind of person, and I think most 3DS games look great, some gamers however, would disagree with me. Nintendo could benefit from it, like when you watch YouTube videos on your 3DS, it's suddenly clear, some video's are just too detailed to watch on the 3DS. Also, I think with a higher resolution screen and a more powerful system, more developers would be interested in creating games for the system. Nintendo makes great games, but their console would be even better with a good 3rd party support.
And one more thing: a solid good name. Nothing confusing like "The NEW 3DS" just did.
I am all about making the handheld and home console interchangeable, meaning I can play one game on both. Yes the game will be a bit clunky on the home console, but I would enjoy playing many handheld games on my tv as I enjoy tv games more. I feel Nintendo's audience is split enough that they can sell their regular numbers, and I think the cross platform play could really help in selling more of both systems.
@JakeOfAllTrades "I just want something that can play my DS games"
Even you know that's not happening.
I have a dream. That one day Nintendo will release a handheld that streams to the tv via Roku-esque device. I have a dream that all games will be portable and playable streaming to your tv. I have a dream these games will be HD. I have a dream that FPS will come to the handheld a long with more 3rd party support.
@minotaurgamer Metroid, niche? It's a critically acclaimed series that took a dive in sales with its last title. The sales have never been astronomical, really, so I see what you're getting at. However, it is one of the most influential games in video game history and has had significant sales in the face of adversity.
Also, I think the guy was thinking more about potential of the combination and his own reaction to that scenario. He developed a Metroidvania game, after all.
Even so, match the name and legacy with a fresh and impressive take on the game and there is great potential there for sales and greatness.
My ideal handheld:
-Unified OS that spans the handheld, console, and even smartphones.
-Some kind of game changing innovation.
-Keep the dual screen clamshell design.
-Can function as a console controller.
I'm thinking dual analog controls and higher DPI screens will go a long way towards success. 3D may persist, but it's not a given. Nintendo will have already settled on at least one key aspect it considers new and I can't really guess what that would be, but I like the WayForward guy's idea of impromptu connectivity.
For me, though? I just want the thing to get its main screen up on my TV. I enjoy sharing my game experiences and I can't do that effectively with the 3DS. Is this same frustration shared by a single person in Japan? Outlook: disappointment.
I think we're getting really close to a unified OS, possibly open one. And that the handheld device would have more connectivity with the console. We will see cross-buy with the MvsDK game, Smash 4 using the handheld as a controller, and cross-saves with MH3U.

I do hope they stick with the 3D screen, though because I do love that! It's so immersive and it's only getting better!
PS Vita already implements a lot of the ideas these developers suggested and has performed miserably on the market because of a lack of developer support. That speaks volumes to how much weight their opinions hold.
Nintendo is going to do their own thing their own way and we'll all still end up buying it. That's brand power.
All I want is something to make me feel like I could bring my 3ds anywhere. A smoother, sleeker design. nMessage (like iMessage with Nintendo) and friend usernames instead of friend codes. Redisgn the eShop to not take so long to load and make it easier to navigate. Finally, make it so you can use your fingers more easily on the touch screen, and going along with this make it so you can turn the DS sideways and use both screens as a touch screen.
Hm, I think Nintendo should ditch a home console next gen and just create two handhelds.
One low end model that's cheaper and would succeed the 3DS and a higher end model that would take Wii U's price range.
Both would come with an HDMI dongle (that I guess could act as a "home console") to stream games to the TV when at home and both would be able to have 3-4 controllers (with the handheld also being a "controller") connected to them wirelessly.
And since both would use the same or similar CPU architecture, they could both get the same games. Of course the high end model would have better graphics and maybe some extra features, but the games would, at their core, still be the same gameplay-wise no matter what they're played on. And of course, the high end model would have some exclusives that take full advantage of it.
I could see the low end model following Nintendo's design philosophy of reusing old tech and use 2013 mobile tech. 2014 is also a possibility, and would make porting work much easier, especially if they use a 64-bit mobile CPU from that year, since 2014 mobile tech are compatible with today's APIs and engines. Meanwhile the high end model could use something from 2016-2017. Considering how impressive last year's and this year's mobile tech are, 2016 and 2017 tech should be able to achieve amazing results. At the very least they should keep up with the PS4 and XBone (which is probably good enough for Nintendo home console-wise nowadays). By 2017, the PS4 and XBone would be in their 4th year, and would probably have at least another 3 years on the market before they're replaced by successors (MS and Sony seem keen on turning their console brands into services rather than devices, so who knows if they get successors). Having a handheld model that keeps up with or slightly surpasses their competitors' home consoles then wouldn't be quite as bad as the Wii U situation. Maybe.
Considering that the 3DS is doing decently well worldwide and how badly Wii U is doing, I don't think an all handheld future from Nintendo would be so bad.
@dariusq
Vita has a lack of developer support?
That may be true in 2011-2012, but it's doing excellently now. Not much western dev support, but I don't see 3DS getting much of that outside of indies either.
@AVahne Hence the empty recommendations for a portable coming from western developers who aren't going to support the platform anyways.
Personally, I'm very happy with the Japanese support. And I'm not worried about N3DS because it's backed by Nintendo. That's assurance enough there will be great games available.
