It's time once again for the Nintendo Download Update, North American gamers, and this week brings a variety of treats to the Wii U and 3DS. The home console has a highly regarded new title, some rhythmic action and a retro platformer, while the main arrival on the 3DS is a dungeon-crawling RPG. There's plenty more besides, so let's get into it.
Missed the Nintendo Download Update for Europe earlier in the week? No problem, all of the details are right here.
Wii U eShop
Teslagrad (Rain Games, $14.99) — A puzzle platformer with elements of action also thrown in, this stylish début effort from Rain Games has you manipulating magnets, earning new abilities and progressing onwards to uncover the mysteries of the world. It's an entirely beautiful, engaging adventure, as we explain in our Teslagrad review.
KickBeat: Special Edition (Zen Studios, $9.99) — Available from 16th September. This is an action rhythm game in which you pull off impressive Kung-Fu moves while keeping to the beat; it features bands such as Pendulum, P.O.D, Celldweller and Blue Stahli. We'll get our Kung Fu Funk on for our review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Adventure Island (Hudson, $4.99) — A rather well-known NES platformer, the twist in Master Higgins' adventure is that he has to gather fruit to survive, while eggs yield weapons that can add a bit of extra fun. It's a quirky and downright challenging game, and earned a decent recommendation in our Adventure Island review.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts

Wooden Sen'SeY (Neko Entertainment, free)
3DS eShop
The Keep (Cinemax, $12.99) — An ambitious first-person dungeon-crawling RPG, you take on puzzles and battles as you seek to unravel the mystery around a rather daunting tower; this'll also include multiple difficulty settings with permadeath options. We'll explore the depths of this game for our review.
Hideaways: Foggy Valley (Selectsoft, $4.99) — It's another hidden object game, making this genre — ironically — very easy to find on the eShop. This one promises over 1000 hidden objects and some sliding block puzzles for some variety; we'll take a close look in our review.
Top Model 3D (TREVA Entertainment, $19.99) — Proof that we're not past the stage of games with '3D' bolted onto the title, this is a simulation title in which you "experience the life of a supermodel", though as you use a PDA it's the life of a supermodel 15 years ago. Still, we'll put on our most expensive clothes — which isn't saying much — and strut down the street while working on a review.
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Girls' Fashion Shoot (Rising Star Games, $7.98 until 24th September)

eh.... nothing interesting for me.
A Wii U demo!? That almost never happens!
Edit: I guess you can't use your own music in Kickbeat?
B L A H ! ! ! !
I want to try that Wii u demo game. Neko Entertainment also made Kung Fu Rabbit and that was great.
Also, I'm waiting for this site to update.
Might pick up Unepic finally......but I really need to save some of my eShop dollars......I'm guessing I'll need them for October through January
Looks like NoA forgot about the VC again. If it wasn't for Capcom and Konami, we'd almost never see any Wii U VC releases anymore.
Just...
Just...
Waiting on those games for this week's sale.
This week's releases look good. Mario Golf: Advance Tour is coming on the 25th.
Interested in both Teslagrad and Kickbeat, gave my vote to the latter.
Teslagrad!! i been waiting for this for a long time. And Unepic cause it's on sale and i haven't tried it maybe KickBeat.
Comments about not getting the Smash Bros 3DS demo in 3... 2...1...
@CaviarMeths - I like to think NoA is trying not to release VC games when other 3rd party games are being released to keep that game in the spot light.
@Yosher Thanks for starting it..
Nothing excites me this week so no sale.
@bezerker99 - I find it amusing that Sonic is impatiently tapping his foot over the wait on Week 2 Smash sales
@Gerbwmu It's the biggest software drought in Nintendo's 30 year history in the video game industry. They could have padded out the summer with VC content, but in the last 18 weeks, they have released a grand total of 3 first party games on the Wii U VC: Mario Tennis: Power Tour, Donkey Kong Jr. Math, and Super Mario Kart.
Teslagrad for me and can't wait!
I also want unepic but would like a better discount. I have enough to play so I can wait. Also waiting for a discount on Guacamelee. So many good games on the shop lately.
Kickbeat being from Zen is the only reason I have an interest. Will wait for reviews. Plus not crazy about the song list.
Wii U got a demo?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stdi-1tIUhM
@ThomasBW84 Shouldn't Curtain Call be on this list or is it not coming to the shop? I think this with the music player would be an excellent dl. I would've sold the first to have it with me at all times.
Still not Fire Emblem or Mario pinball or the US? That's alright. At least we will get that Smash demo by next summer hopefully!
Not really anything for me this week until they show what games are going to be on sale for the smash sale.
@Spoony_Tech Probably yes, but it wasn't in Nintendo's PR.
@rjejr And that one needs a demo. I'm on the fence but would like to try it. Seen one great review and I questioned his score as it was 2 points higher then anyone else's.
@ThomasBW84 I was afraid you'd say that. I'm going to hop on the shop and see if there is info on it coming out soon.
@ThomasBW84 It is. Say dl here on 9/16. I'm going to dl this one as it just makes more sense.
Teslagrad for me, will probably try out the Wooden Sen'sey demo too.
Just the Wooden Sen'SeY demo for me today and I think Minish Cap will be on sale later today, I'm interested in Teslagrad but $15 is a bit much
@Spoony_Tech - I think a lot more games need demos than don't. Especially the quirky DL only games in the $10 - $15 range. I think having a well populated and constantly evolving Demo spot in the eShop would generate sales. Not from your typical NL reader maybe, but from people who work all day and just want to come home and see what's on eShop, they can play a demo and if they like it buy it. Can't find DL only games perusing the aisles at Target. Try before you buy.
I was going to buy this game just for having a demo, but that 5 review and "'old-school' difficulty" and "but what we have is an overly difficult, at times intensely irritating, platformer." already turned me off. I'll just keep playing Kung Fu Rabbit, which never had a demo but was only $2.
All garbage-ware except for Teslagrad. (or should I say Rubbish-ware?)
I'll download that Wii U demo....
@CaviarMeths
1st party games have been scarce, but there have been a lot of great 3rd party/indie games in the last 18 weeks, including Shovel Knight, Guacamelee, Child of Light, Stick it to the Man, Scram Kitty, and Ittle Dew. Counting those and the many others, not to mention the various 3rd party VC releases, I doubt this has been "the biggest software drought in Nintendo's 30 year history in the video game industry".
Download the WiiU Wooden Sensey demo first. Waiting on a review for some of the other games. Unepic is tempting being on sale.
Teslagrad for me! Super excited, and hopefully it continues the incredible e-Shop run of Child of Light / Shovel Knight / Guacamelee / Steamworld Dig.
I've also been meaning to get Unepic when a discount hit, but I was looking for something along the $5.99 range. That, coupled with Teslagrad releasing this week, will mean I'll have to wait a bit more.
@Gerbwmu I was disappointed with Unepic to be honest. I haven't played it in ages, but what I do remember was that I didn't like inventory system. It was hard to remember where everything was and the items looked the same except for the color. The writing or dialogue wasn't very funny either imo.
A DEMO? Nice. It's been a while since the last demo...like almost 2 years (I.E. we haven't seen a demo since launch)
Teslagrad but it will be tomorrow.
Dang, i think i missed Unepic when it was on sale in Europe. Pretty sure i'd get it for 8€.
The Keep sounds interesting, but I think I'm gonna wait for the review. Totally grabbing Teslagrad, though.
In a word...donkey
The Keep seems interesting.... Permadeath? Awesome!
Im torn between dwnlding Teslagrad now or waiting for the retail version to come out…ive been waiting so long ahhh who am i kidding im going to download it today when i get home from work
Well, I know I'm getting Mega Man V and VI if they're on sale, but besides that, nothing.
Oy, VC.
@Stucazzo - thank you for the opinion....maybe I will wait it out for a cheaper price
@Mr_Trill281 - hard thing being a Cowboys fan these days......Go Lions! (always hard being a Lions fan)
Still holding onto a little hope for Fire Emblem(7)...
My vita is coming today so I'm not disappointed by the lack of sales that interest me. My wallet needs a break. Lots of good games coming soon for wii u so I can start saving without worrying about impulse buys.
@OneBagTravel I believe "Shovelware" is the word you're searching for, but then again, games like Shovel Knight and Steamworld Dig brought a new meaning to that word.
Kickbeat peak my interest but I'll get it after a bit of research on the gameplay. I may be tempted to get Beyblade for that price.
Another bad week...
Does anyone know how much the Just Dance games are currently selling for on the eShop?
Huh, Bit Boy‼︎ ARCADE. I may get that if not enough games in the Super Smashing Sale interest me.
Tick tock, goes the clock. 9am can't come fast enough.
'Wodden SenSey demo'....that's a weird way to spell Super Smash Bros.
...also waiting for the Smash Bros. challengers specials to update...finally gonna complete my Zelda collection methinks. Teslagrad also looks interesting though.
3DS Smash Sale week 2 is up. Looks good too.
Going to look into Teslagrad later. Nothing this week, though. Edit: Yes, more demos need to exist for d/l-only software.
Only thing remotely interesting for 3DS is The Keep.
Nothing for me this week.
Nothing for me this week. Gotta wait for Theatrhythm next week!
No no no and noo! All these games and demo's f'ing suck.
Going to get teslagrad and kickbeat I think.
Just bought a whole lot of games from the Smash sale. Awesome week for that reason alone.
yes, finally I'll pick up all the zelda vc games I'm missing!
Meh. Nothing looks interesting besides the Bass Fishing game that's on sale. Wish No had a review for it but whatever. Definitely excited to check out the next edition on the 3ds Smashing Sales though. Oh, of course the 3ds demo too!
Must it be today...?
I enjoyed Unepic quite a bit.
@rjejr
I really don't get you. Kung Fu Rabbit can be really hard and infuriating at times, and you play it? And $2? I paid $5 for it.
was hoping for SSB4 demo...
I'll be buying Mega Man X from the Smash sale, you guys should've put an option of "Buying something from the Smash Sale" since I'm definitely buying something this week.
@Iggly I would have bought The legend of Zelda Windwaker HD if it was in the Smash Sale, but since it isn't on sale I might get Mega Man X or the Minish cap. It sucks that mario got full retail Wii U games sales and Zelda is got just VC games on sale for the Wii U.
As for this week I might get the Wii U demo since there hasn't been and Wii U demo's since last year.
0% for all the Just Dance games, but I though Wii U owners only like Just Dance?
@PokeMario I hate the Just Dance games, if there was and option to remove it from my Wii U eshop I would so I wouldn't have to even see those horrible game anywhere on my eshop channel.
Get Teslagrad you guys. Been playing this afternoon and it's so cool!! Best game this summer
@Vriess Better than Shovel Knight!?? No way.
@mowerdude You should really buy Minish Cap, it's one of my favorite Zelda games. I would've bought it if I didn't already own it on my GBA(DS).
For sure getting Teslagrad but I'm also tempted by Unepic.....been on my list for a while. I still need to finish Child of Light too.
@Porky
Because here in Europe, the Wii U version of Shovel Knight isn't out yet. I finished it on the PC though, and it is absolutely awesome indeed
Well I just got The Keep and I have to admit that I'm really surprised. It takes a little time to get into the controls: you move with the joystick and strafe with the "L" button. Everything else you use the stylus for. Once you're on the map mode you can activate buttons on the walls or pick up stuff by using the touchscreen making an icon appear on the upper screen and moving it. Dragging stuff to your inventory or quickslots. Attack are done the same way. This doesn't look like a game you'll rush through but instead have to take time to check your surroundings and plan your moves. Pretty much all the text has voice-over and the music and ambience noise are really fitting. The graphics are nice. Nothing shattering but pretty. There's a tutorial but you still have to figure some stuff on your own. So far I'm really liking it and the permadeath option could add a lot of replay value. I went that way cause I like a challenge and there's even 3 difficulty stings and you can make 3 profiles if more than one person is playing on the same 3DS so that's convenient. I'd recommend the game to anyone who like dungeon crawlers and likes to take it slow. I hope it'll get a good review but even if it doesn't I don't regret getting it.
The permadeath thing only means that you have to restart the level your on if you die as oppose to being able to save where you are in the regular mode.
Nothing good yet again for the 3DS.
Teslagrad, I'm pleased, only $14.99, no raised price
Wooden Sen'seY Demo because college turned me into a cheapskate.
Unepic is on sale right after I bought it. I hate when this happens. Does this happen to anyone else?
So Nintendo puts 6-8 of their best known games on sale (including a great deal on A Link Between Worlds), indie devs drop not one but two anticipated eShop titles, loads of Smash info is given, Bayonetta 2 gets a release date and people waste time complaining about the VC?
Even though a decent 3rd party game released on the VC.
Wow.
Nintendo is trying to sell systems.
Honestly, how can some people be so incredibly dense?
@KnightRider666 Seriously how did you get so cool?
Hoping for a smash demo tomorrow...or soon.
@sinalefa - I picked it up b/c it was on sale for $2 and I thought it was cute. I think Im stuck on level 4 or 5 but it took me about 2 hours to get thst far so I got my moneys worth. Edit - my mistake, $2.49. $2.70 with tax. Guess I need to go beat another level.
Have you played Wooden Sen Sey? Not the demo, the whole game? I wasnt going to get it b/c of the bsd review here but I thought it was good for $8. LBP on Wii U. Ill probably buy it, just wondering how hard its going to get. The demo was easy so far.
@ryanator008 - It never happens to me b/c I only buy things on sale Though I did buy PSASBR for $5 a couple of months ago and its free w/ Plus this month. But Plus runs out and now I get to keep it so its a wash.
@DiscoGentleman - Im pretty sure the Sonic Lost World demo came out after W101, I DL it11/21, and I DL Nano Assualt Neo 12/23 but that may have already been oit. But none at all in 2014. Until today.
Teslagrad has my interest and the The Keep looks pretty good too. This week isn't bad, although I would have preferred the pokemon tcg on vc...
Teslagrad looks fantastic but I don't have the money to be shelling out $15 for a game right now so... nothing this week (or probably for a while).
@NodesforNoids
I understand your argument, but the complaint about too little VC titles is a long standing one. Nintendo has surely heard it, yet ignores it or fails to comment about it. It's a source of frustration for us retro gamers that has been building for years many years now. When the Wii came out in 2006 we were treated to multiple great VC titles a month. Over the years there was a decline in released titles, and now we can't even play most of the VC titles that were released for the Wii on the Wii U!! We have to make due with about 10 bad, or mediocre VC titles for each good one, and maybe only once every couple of months. The retro gamers want to buy the games but there aren't hardly any. And then there are people who frown upon people who use emulators and roms...really... The 25 yo + gamers want to buy play the games that they grew up with! Nintendo owes us that much!
@rjejr
I am not sure how many hours I have logged in, but I know I am like in the beginning of the third world. The cave levels are particularly hard. The game is cute and I don't mind brutal difficulty most of the time IF I like the gameplay.
About Wooden, I haven't taken the plunge. All the metacritic reviews point to an average game, with a metascore of 63. If you are gonna get a hard game for that price, add two bucks and get Scram Kitty, my eShop GOTY. Or get Armillo, even if you don't like the graphics.
@sinalefa - Nah, Scram Kitty's not my thing, but thanks for all the advice I do appreciate it. I started playing Sly Cooper 4 tonight - PS+ game awhile back - so I'm ok fo rnow. I really do like open world platforming games the best.
