Your post confused me, Sean. Are you talking about the power button on the Wiimote? Yes, you can turn the console off (red light) using the button on the Wiimote. That's how I usually turn my Wii off. I guess if you had "Standby Connection" turned on, the Wiimote button would turn the power light to yellow, because that's the standby connection indicator. I hope that cleared things up for you.
I allways have standby mode turned on so I can access all the features but I allways turned my Wii of via holding it's power button several seconds effectivly bypassing all software shutdown rotunes in favor of the full hardware power shutdown. Even on odd occausions the LED turn yelloy for a fraction of a second before it's turned Red.
Effectivly I never yet me Wii be in standby even thru I got the standby mode turned on.
Well I changed that setting on both Wiis and it works a charm. Speeds up shutting down the machines and it's great for playing downloads on one box and then the other.
I can't believe it either. I had the same assumption like Sean because the standby option is in the WiiConnect24 sub menu. But it works great. Not holding the powerbutton for a red light and I can even use the remote. Fantastic.

yeah the red light remote shutdown is the main reason I've kept the wiiconnect off. I've never used the functionality of wiiconnnect so I'd rather have the convenience and power saving of completely turning off the wii right from the remote.
@Sean, I would have done it this way, too, but not being able to use the Weather or News Channels - which I totally don't understand, WTF? - was too high a price to pay for that convenience. So I went and bought that clip-on Nyko Cooler out of an abundance of caution. (It definitely does the job, but makes a bit of a racket doing so. My Wii is in a cabinet, so it's not a problem, but anyone getting one for use in a free-air setting should be warned.) Can you explain what you meant when you said it's great for playing downloads on one box then the other?
Whoah sweet ! You people are freaking awesome ! I never thought to turn the standby off ! lol I feel like a complete idiot but thanks to you people now I know.

And knowing is half the battle!
You should also know, in case you didn't pick it up from my previous post, is that turning off standby connection prevents you from being able to use the Weather Channel and the News Channel. Makes no sense, but it's true. So if those are important features to you, then it's something to consider. I know many people couldn't care less about those channels though.
@Vendetta Thanks for the info. I appreciate it ! I like how people on here are more friendly, if this was IGN I would of been blasted with cuss words. But NintendoLife Rocks !
I've had no problem and its been hooked up since 2007, but there have been months that my Wii just wasn't hooked up or my internet wasn't working right. I probably should check on my console when I get home though since its been blue since yesterday. @_@

I don't understand why that would make a difference to those channels -- you mean even when the machine is on they won't work? That makes no sense! I had the standby option on before and simply turned it off at the system -- wouldn't that functionally be the same thing? I'll have to test this out tonight. The only drawback I could see is lack of weather effects in the starting menu for Wii Fit, but I'm not bothered by that and I don't have other games that use it (at least I don't think I do). I suppose I could get into the habit of turning on Standby Connect after powering it up and then turn it off before shutdown. I cannot remember the last time I launched either of those channels, though.
Some days (like yesterday) I only play downloads, i.e., WiiWare/VC so being able to play something like Bonsai Barber, then turn the machine off to red light and start up the Japanese Wii to play Dragon Buster and Derby Dog and then switch that one off with the remote saves a tiny bit of bother.
Ah, I got you. So because there's no disc when you play downloads, it saves you the trip to the console you would otherwise take to eject the disc.
Back to the Weather and News Channel issue with the standby connection - yes, neither channel works when the connection is disabled, even when the Wii is powered on. If you attempt to launch either, it kicks you back with a message telling you sorry, pal, you don't have the standby connection enabled. Wow. I'd bet this would affect games like Tiger PGA 10, which use Weather Channel feeds for localized environment customization.
I didn't know Wii Fit used the Standby Connection, but I agree it definitely doesn't matter. I can see how it would with Tiger Woods, though. Of course, the question is do you WANT the in-game weather to be real-world accurate?
Something about the Wii is designed really stupidly (like we didn't already know that) if you can't access those channels after you turn it on. Life With Playstation gives you the same kind of info, and you can access it right after turning your PS3 on and signing in to PSN! The system doesn't even HAVE a setting to ALWAYS be connected online (unless you just leave it on period, of course), and you don't NEED one!
My Backloggery Updated sporadically. Got my important online ID's on there, anyway. :P
Not being able to use weather or news is the only thing I kinda miss.
The really weird thing about that is that after some general wii use it will actually show the weather and headlines from the wii menu but of course if you try to start the channel it won't let you while wiiconnect is off. So with that said I don't know if having wiiconnect off actually will affect games that use weather.

Yeah, I noticed the same thing. It's obvious that both the Weather and News Channels are getting their updates while the Wii is powered on (green light) and connected to the internet, so why on Earth shouldn't those channels be launchable? That's poor design, in my opinon.

Those channels are why I have the stand by turned on but I always turn my Wii of via the console power button. Not a quick press as it's set to standby mode but hold it down sevral seconds till it's turned red like I & others mentiong before in this thread alone just not everyone gets what we meaning.
It launches and runs as normal - not just displaying updated icon info on the Wii Menu? Can you confirm that? If so, what Menu version are you running, and have done any mods to your Wii? Just curious. Anyone else see this same behaviour?
