I see how it could be harming your system, so why not? It's just more convenient, I think, to be able to receive messages and updates while you're not using the console.
It ruined alot of Nintendo Wii's a couple years ago. Mine is from that time, that's why I'm concerned.
And just to clarify, I'm talking about standby mode as in when you turn your console off it's a yellow light not a red one. WiiConnect24 is always on for me, but standby mode is off.

What I've read in the past is the Wiis with "flickering pixels" had heat sinks (those big metal things they attach to the top of the chips) which were not properly attached to the GPU. Unfortunately there is no way of knowing whether it's going to happen to your Wii or not.
I've always kept my Wii on standby and nothing has happened yet. But I've only had it since February of 2008. The manufacturing problem was probably fixed by then.
I thought the Wii was specifically designed to stay on at all times without overheating? I've never had any problems with it, and I'm not going to stop now. Besides, I recently bought a wiimote charger/wii docking station with a fan, so I don't think I'll ever have any problems.

My brother's Wii (bought in early 2007) got the artifact problem with standby connection on, so I've always left it off with mine (bought summer 2008). If what Zaphod has read about the heat sinks is true, I might very well be safe leaving it on, but I don't really want to risk it, and I see very little benefit to having it on anyway. Though I do admit, I STILL haven't received some messages from Nintendo that other people said they got weeks ago, even when I leave the system on the main menu for several minutes to give it time to connect and update. Not sure what if anything I can do about that...

Mine's been making a loud motorcycle sound when loading discs and playing disc games for about a year now. Is that related to WiiConnect24? It seems like it started happening around when I got Animal Crossing City Folk, which is when I first started using WiiConnect24...

If your Wii is an early model then quite possibly. Have you had any problem using Dual layer discs? Mine gets really hot when WC24 is on even though it is surrounded by nothing but nice cooling air. Mine made a sound like that one day so I turned it off and it's been ok since touchwood. Plus it's bad for the enviroment dudes
I have my WiiConnect24 turned on but to save overheating i turn my Wii off fully by holding down the power button so it fulluy turns off (red LED not Yellow LED)
I keep my WiiConnect24 on but the standby mode is turned off. I used to keep it on all the time but my Wii just got way too hot and that worried me. I rather not risk my Wii so from now on I'll be keeping my Wii's standby mode set to off just to be safe.
Why do people give themselves extra work on system shutdown? You can just set your system to "WiiConnect24" on and "Standby Connection" off to get the same result as holding the power button for several seconds, but without the extra wasted effort. That's what I do.

Really? I didn't know that. It's true what they say then. Read the F---ing Manual . Thanks for the tip.

Heck, you don't even have to read the manual to figure that one out! Just poke around in the menus, and it's really quite obvious! But yeah, glad to help, I guess.

Wait, are you saying if I turn "Standby Connection" to "Off" then holding the button on my remote will turn it off (red light)?
Damn! I'll have to check that when I get home. I just assumed Standby Connection referred to having WiiConnect 24 running when the system was in standby; not that it actually controlled whether or not the system went into standby!
Your post confused me, Sean. Are you talking about the power button on the Wiimote? Yes, you can turn the console off (red light) using the button on the Wiimote. That's how I usually turn my Wii off. I guess if you had "Standby Connection" turned on, the Wiimote button would turn the power light to yellow, because that's the standby connection indicator. I hope that cleared things up for you.
