I remember back in 2007 when I got the console there was all this talk about Wii getting heat problems when that was on so on my first day I turned it off and have never had it on since then. Has this been fixed with firmware or something, or should it stay off?

I have always sent and received a lot of msgs, so I have kept mine on standby for nearly three years now. Apart from being unable to play dual-layer discs (probably due to the fact my Wii smokes), it's all working fine. So long as both fans are exposed and you haven't got it in a cabinet with other electronics I don't see a problem. It's happiest when it's hot, like most electrical items.
Mine's had Wiiconnect24 on since launch day and it's never overheated either. It's sitting out where it can breathe though so maybe just keep it well ventilated as previously stated.

I've had Wii console either on, or on standby with Wii-Connect-24, since purchase, a couple of weeks after European release. I use messaging and WiiSpeak, a lot, (to talk to my family,) and the console gets used almost every day. (Even if no time for games, at least for WiiFit.) Also, our other Wii, the one for the wife and kids, that's never been off, with Wii-Connect-24... It seems to me, if the console is not in a cabinet, and on it's stand, there never was a problem.
I've got my Wii in a cabinet with other gear. It gets a little warm in there, so I picked up one of these Nyko Cooler units. It's way too loud, honestly. I'd never be able to tolerate it if my Wii weren't in a cabinet. But that's the only reason I got it. Wii stays on or on standby 24/7, never a problem.
It's designed for WiiConnect24, so unless you've got it blocked off so that it can't ventilate, or unless you don't always keep your place at a decent temperature, there's nothing to worry about. I've always used it, and always will.

When I first got my Wii I had WiiConnect24 on 24/7 but then I realised how hot it was getting and now never have it on. Don't know if this would cause issues or not but I'd rather be on the safe side I never really used it anyway.
I keep wiiconnnect24 off pretty much all the time so that whenever I remotely turn the wii off it is actually fully off and not on standby. I miss out on weather and news on the wii but I'd rather not bother with the whole standby thing. Its not out of fear of my wii breaking though, just personal preference.
I keep the WiiConnect off just because it uses less electricity that way, and the less I have to pay on my electric bill, the better. Every little bit helps now a days.

What exactly am I gaining by having WC24 on? If it's just the firmware updates, I can wait until I'm actually using the system to receive them. I don't use the message function, so, though I have WC24 enabled, I still red-light the system before I go to bed each night.
I can't see how it could be harming your system, so why not? It's just more convenient, I think, to be able to receive messages and updates while you're not using the console.
