Ok, me being the nosey devil I am want to know how many of you actually use your Wii for online play? For some developers, they overlook the platform in favour of the 360/PS3 for online play.

If so, what are your impressions of the games you play and how they handle online? I'm not talking Animal Crossing here, games like Mario Kart etc...

If I could I would only use my Wii for online play since i don't have any friends owning a wii. Everyone i play online with comes from England or Usa. For me wii speak and online games is make it or break it for continuing my support of Nintendo.

The only reason i bought the conduit for example is the online functionality and the reason imo for mario karts success is the online, same goes for onslaught, water warfare, tetris party and so on.

Nintendo should really start developing more online games and more wiispeak functionality and that includes all the developers out there. Online isn't a shortcut for success but good online is.

I used to play Mario Kart online semi-regularly and I found it to be a great online experience that was unaffected by latency. Brawl however was so laggy that it was just completely unplayable for me which I never really understood seeing how perfectly Mario Kart worked.

The WiFi service is kind of a slap in the face to all who asked for it imo.
We begged for years and years for Nintendo to go online, and then finally when it came we were given the absolute bare minimum.
The only upside is that it's free, and maybe that cautious mothers don't have to worry about voice chat profanity. (not the people who asked for it in the first place)
We begged for years and years for Nintendo to provide voice chat for their crappy online service, and when it finally came we were given the absolute bare minimum.
Every aspect of NWFC restricts the developers in what they can offer, gamers look elsewhere for online play, and so developers stop making online games for Wii.

I play the Conduit at the moment, High Voltage have done pretty well considering what they have to work with.
EA on the other hand provide their own service and it kicks the crap out of Nintendos frankly.
Mario Kart has the best implementation of WiFi imo, but it is clear Nintendo just plain does not care for online still.

They should find another company to handle servers for them and start up a subscription based model with a proper wireless headset and registered gamer tags, friend 'currently playing' tracking, a lobby system where you create game rooms and have pre-determined rule sets. And some sort of patching for all the past games that should have used such a system like Brawl.

In short: it sucks, and I don't think it's going to be fixed until maybe next console.

Well, we're working on our next title; not that I can say what it is...>

What it is, we're trying to see if it's viable to include multiplayer. So on average, say with Mario Kart for example, how many players jump in and play? Shame on me, I've never played it online..

I usually don't play the Wii online, except for games like Mario Kart and SSBB (when it works correctly), as most experiences with the Wii online are pretty underwhelming.

I've only played The Conduit and Yakuman Wii (online Japanese mahjong game). I've tried to get online games in Alien Crush Returns (PAL) and Overturn (Japan) going, but neither of those games seemed to have communities that stuck on.

The Conduit seems well-supported; when I play a public match it's 10-12 players every time. I don't have Mario Kart, but that one famously has had evergreen sales and online support.

Yakuman Wii is massive. Despite the time difference with Japan I could get a 2-4 player match going every time I've played (it's been a few months though; hopefully they're still playing -- who doesn't love mahjong?).

I will say that the local experience is more important than online simply because the online won't last forever. Eventually people will move on and no one will be on the servers, so if a game's only strength is online play, then I'm not biting. If a game is good and has functional online play, then that's great, sign me up!

So general concensus is that local's more important?

I'm sure you're not going to rely soley on a brief thread to determine your focus, but you'll find a very mixed bag here. For my part, I see local versus online multiplayer as a false choice - at least when it comes to retail releases. There is no valid reason to not offer both options. WiiWare might be a different story with the size constraints, of course. For WiiWare, yes, I'd be happier with local than online.

The Wii should stick to what the Wii does best, and leave the XBox/PS to what they do best. The latter have online, and I don't think the Wii should really care. It does it's unique, innovative games, and should stick to what it does best rather than trying to copy the other platforms and fail (thhis opinion applies to Natal. The PS3 controls looks too awesome for me to hate though ).When I play with my friends, we're playing Halo or Castle Crashers, not Mario Kart. Not because MK is worse, but because the 360 is better for online. Even the Conduit, with the so-called greatest online on the Wii, is atrocious next to the other platforms.

To me, local multiplayer includes playing with friends over the internet, since "online" is now such a broad term nowadays, so for me local > online.

Mario Kart's online structure is nearly faultless, up to 12 random players and friends, dropping in and out seamlessly.
Mario Strikers is really smooth, but you get quitters who steal your victories.
Tiger10 is amazing! Random matches, 4 player simultaneous friend matches, daily, monthly competitions, and play the pro's. And quitters still lose!!!
The Conduit is excellent in friend matches, Wii-Speak works really well. Worldwide I've had major issues with crashes and hackers. Boooo!
That's about all the Wii games I play online beside puzzle ones. Everything else is on PC.

Now tell me your making an online futuristic racer.

The problem is your a developer so my 1st instinct is to shout EVERYONE WHO BUYS WII GOES ONLINE. But I'm just an average game player so I wouldn't no. You said AC doesn't count but that's the one I play online most. A close 2nd would be Mario Kart Wii. It's not that I don't like online just if you do it, make online your top priority. I play Water Warfare online a lot lately and am looking forward to Monster Hunter 3, monthly fee and all. I know you can't discuss your future projects yet but, tbh, it all depends on 2 things: genre and polish. If online is your focus then people will forgive Nintendo enforced restrictions and just love your game. Otherwise, best stick with local play.

I hardly ever use my Wii online.

My PS3 has great online covered, so I don't need to mess with the Wii's horrible online.

I don't have many games that have online capability anyway... i prefer local multiplayer or single player gaming action. I don't like having to depend on someone else's connection and willingness to not shut off their machine if they're losing in order for me to have fun. :3

I know the Wii's online is below average, but I've spend quite a few hours playing Mario Strikers Charged, I love the game and it's online really gives a huge replay value to it, Also I wouldn't play Mario Kart Wii anymore if it weren't for the online. I like the service, it is free and gives a little extra to your games (or, in the case of MKWii, it prevent the game from being absolute garbage). Nintendo failed with Brawl, but at least the rest of the game is good, and it's local multiplayer is as great as ever. Then, Hudson failed with Bomberman Blast imo, I shouldn't have bought that game, but they got it right on Water Warfare, I really enjoy its online play.
Online is not that important to me, but giving that extra to a game is always nice, if it works.

Ive played the following from time to time - Mario Kart Wii, Medal of Honor Heroes 2,tried Brawl but was full of lag for me,Onslaught,Water Warfare and Madden 09. I have played a lot of Call of Duty World at War. I have played about 8 hours online with the Conduit so far but the loading into brown screens has turned me away from the game for now. I wished the Wii had more concentration for online but I am also hoping over the next year or two our full list of demands for online gaming will be met.
