Couldn't somebody start a poll that we will send to Nintendo America and Nintendo Europe? And it should also include wii-speak. For me the difference would be to buy or not to buy. How about you?
Maybe Miyamoto is just teasing, NSMBwii not capable of online? To much happening? Hahaha.
It's due out for release by the end of the year; online is something that's probably too big to add and test if they're sticking to that release date...
I honestly see (at least I think I do) the logic of now adding online play. For me personally, all I want to do is play this sort of a game with family and friends. To open things up to online would mean more than just friend codes, it would also mean you could do a search to play with up to 4 people from anywhere in the world. The problem with this is that you'll more often than not get players who just want to screw you over, y'know? There is already a huge problem with cheaters in online gaming, but you don't have to crack the code to be a #&$ to someone in NSMBWii, you just have to throw turtle shells and throw everyone off cliffs. I can see the online functionality of a game like this, totally pissing people off who just want to play for fun.
Its one thing if your buddy, right next to you is a &#@, because you can just punch him, or laugh it off. Its another to get pwned by little &^%$'s all over the world who just want to ruin your gameplay experience. And, in all honesty, if you're the sort of person who just can't get people over to play with you in person on a Mario game (quite possily the most universally accessible game), and you don't even want to get this to enjoy a single player experience, then I don't think online is really going to help you.

I've seen this argument being made a lot recently, but we seem to forget one very important thing: friend codes. "Online play" does not necessarily translate into "thousands of pimply little $#%^#*s invading your game and disrupting the fun." "Online play" can just as easily mean "a game with three college friends, or family who lives in another state."
Nintendo (for all the flaws you can mention regarding its Wi-Fi experience) makes it very easy to control your online experience. If you don't want to play with random nutjobs, you don't need to.
Of course, it's all moot as we already know NSMB will not have online play, but this "ONLINE PLAY WOULD RESULT IN GRIEFING CHAOS!!!" is just paranoia.
Right, Nintendo could just as easily limit the online mode to friends-only if they wanted, too, to avoid such an earth-shaking catastrophe.
But their are better reasons not to include it. More than Brawl or Mario Kart, a standard Mario game requires precision, something that Nintendo's laggy service cannot offer. You really don't want to play this online. I get enough grief trying to use Claus's PK Thunder recovery on Brawl what with all the lag. One split second of lag is all it takes to completely miss, and then you're down one life. You do not want to experience the same thing throughout an entire level of NSMB.
One thing i have not yet been able to establish about NSMB is if it is possible to play single player, anybody know??
Also if single player is possible will the other characters be AI controlled or will you only have one character on screen, and would this limit the amount of secret areas etc that you can find??
It is indeed possible, and it "promises" a rich single player experience.
Which leads me to think there will be little or no multi-player "puzzling" in the game. (ie: one stands on a switch, the other pulls a lever, the third walks through the door) More likely it's just a big Mario game that happens to be optimized for simultaneous play.
Well that alleviates some of my initial worries, now i am really looking forward to this.
I can see playing with friends as being fun, but will most likely tell my friends "screw you guys, im playing on my own" if they are not up to scratch.

Yes quite. For an example just look at SSB Brawl`s online functionality.
Just for you. "I'm just a musical prostitute, my dear." - Freddie Mercury
@ CB Nintendo's E3 presentation and trailer imply that there are other multi-player specific modes, so I think there will be puzzles like you refer to. Also, they could take the Little Big Planet approach and use co-op switch-pushing for unlocking secret paths but not required for progression. I wouldn't write off these possibilities just yet.

I mentioned that online would mean more than friend codes. I understand that some people might want to use them, but isn't that already a complaint of like 99% of the people who play online to begin with? I don't know, I think, yes, it can be a nice option and you can use it if you want it, but to not have online, and then to state that that will mean you won't buy the game seems a little dismissive.
Life honestly hasn't chaged all that much in the last 10-15 years, and I know gaming was just as fun 20 years ago when I was a kid as it is now. I have full access to the internet and I still think I prefer to get a friend over for a visit. Perhaps when Miyamoto said he wanted families and friends to get closer together through this game, he actually meant it- rather than continuing the trend of cyber-interactions.

I didn't realize there were additional modes. Yes, that, potentially, would be fantastic.

Fair enough, but who is saying they won't buy it? It seems more like people are excited about being able to play with their friends and neighbors, but might also enjoy playing with internet pals (NL tourny would be fun, admit it...) and cousins/siblings/etc. that no longer live nearby. I'm not sure I've seen ANYBODY say that they won't buy the game because it lacks Wi-Fi. And certainly anyone who would say that probably doesn't have much interest in Mario platformers to begin with.

He says on an internet forum.
Online is a nice option, but it should never come at the expense of local play for the reasons you've listed and others. As long as it does not prevent you from playing with family and friends, online play doesn't hurt anything because you can always choose to ignore it as I generally do, except for Brawl since everyone I know sucks at it.
@ Chicken Brutus (too lazy to double quote) I've seen more than one person on this site say they aren't interested unless it has Wi-Fi. That is completely bizarre to me.

Wow. I--fortunately for my mental health--haven't noticed that. The only way that would be even remotely rational is if the game was unplayable with a single player. (Which doesn't at all seem to be the case.)
Let me take a moment, then, to respond to anyone out there who IS NOT INTERESTED IN OWNING A BRAND NEW SIDESCROLLING MARIO GAME:
Why do people say NSMB and Brawl are similar? They're not made by the same development teams, and aside from the fact that Mario is in it and it features characters that can jump, there are no similarities I see.
I agree that the lag would ruin this game even more than Brawl (which I find to be playable half the time at least), but this is at least the second or third time I've seen someone say the games look similar or run on a similar engine, and I'm quite confused.
