Topic: Quality in Mature Games

Anyone heard of the new Survival horror game being made by Hudson called Calling?
Well, I just read that Kazufumi Shimizu, the director of this game, thinks that mature games can find an audience on the Wii. The way to succeeding is to produce games of high quality.
It's nice that Hudson feels this way. What I'd like to know is if this game turns out to be good, would you spend 40 - 50 dollars on it when it came out?
What does a game need to get you to spend full price? What do you think would help make mature game successful on the Wii. What would you CALL a mature game?

I'd really like this game to succeed to prove that it IS possible for 3rd party games (mature and otherwise) to succeed on the wii. Hudsons hoping to make a quality game. If successful this might prove just what some people here have been thinking already, if you want us to buy your games put some effort into it. Give us quality games and give us game that is actually worth the money you want from us. Also you can't just make any game slap a mature label on it and expect us to buy it like you're doing us a favor.
Lets put it this way, If this was McDonalds we'd want something worth our money. If we they want our money, they better be giving us more than just a Happy Meal.

No, I would not be interested in the Calling. Not a genre I really like. I think all a Mature title needs is something unique enough to suck a lot of people in. Easier said than done, I know.

Actually I'm the opposite. I LOVE Horror/ghost/monster/ type games.

No.

What I'd like to know is if this game turns out to be good, would you spend 40 - 50 dollars on it when it came out?

Probably not. The genre really doesn't appeal to me.

What does a game need to get you to spend full price?

Subject matter that appeals to me. I have only purchased a handful of titles at full price. I bought Sky Crawlers on the first day of release because I know Project Aces produce quality titles, and this game fit along the same lines. I'll buy TvC first day because I'm a huge fan of Battle of the Planets. I bought Rogue Trooper at full price because I enjoy FPS games and it appeared to be unique enough to warrant a purchase. Of course, two of those games came in at $29.99 upon release, which made my pulling the trigger much easier. I have never purchased a game over $30 at full price before, TvC will be the first.

What would you CALL a mature game?

It's a rating. Makes no difference what I would call a "mature game".

I will say this, I will also consider The Grinder as a first day purchase. I was a big fan of Hunter: The Reckoning (HVS claims this title was an inspiration for this new Wii game) so this title will more than likely appeal to me, warranting a full price purchase.

I'm not sure what the actual price will be on this, but I wonder how many people are hesitant to buy the 40-5o dollar games.
I think that Horror games would be considered for mature audiences and if no one made these types of games on wii because of a lack of interest in "mature" games, that would suck as games with supernatural/horror themes are at the top of my favorite types of games.
Also, where are the people who actually LIKE horror??

What does a game have to do to get me to pay full price for it? Easy, give me what I believe is 50-60 dollars worth of entertainment in it. I don't care if it looks like crap as long as I have fun for the amount of time I play it. I don't care if that's in 5 minute intervals or 10 hour questing sessions. I just want to be entertained. What I don't want is a cookie cutter, half assed game with a brand name thrown on it.

"But Rowdy, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is cookie cutter since it's just like the other Supoer Mario Bros. games" an editor for Ignorant Giant Nutballs might say. But to that I would say, what other game really plays like a Super Mario Bros. game and when was the last SMB 2d platformer released on a home console? Changing enemies and weapon types doesn't change a game in my opinion, so the two Resident Evil, the Dead Space and House of the Dead games on the Wii are all the same game. They are cookie cutter games to me, so if I buy one of them, I don't need the other ones. "But the stories are different" the same editor says. Again, I answer to them If I want a story in the game I'll play an RPG or better yet, read a book where writers use more than just the latest physics engine to get emotion across. The editor, now worried that I'm not a "hardcore" gamer (even though I've only missed a month playing games in almost 30 years and that was due to being in the hospital) reaches out with "Rowdy, you have to at least want online multiplayer, right? Or downloadable content?" I've played twice using online features and both times had a horrible time if I play multiplayer I want the person in the same room, it's just more fun and as for downloadable content, if it's free, great I might download it but there is no way in hell I'm spending extra money to get something I should be getting for my $60 investment.

So what it all comes down to is am I getting content equivelant to the money I am paying. Wii Sports was a pack in game and I had more fun with it than I did when I paid full price for Grand Theft Auto IV. Developers need to realize that the content most people want isn';t a working GPS or text messaging in games but FUN. You can paint a turd anyway you want to and make it the most beautiful thing ever, but when it comes down to it, it's still a turd.

I am the one you despise. I am he who says what you really deep down know but are affraid to admit. I am the Anti-Fanboy, the crusader of truth in a world built on your lies.

Typically "horror" translates into "play some creepy music" and "drop things into the field of view unexpectedly to get a jump out of people". Sort of like every generic, cruddy horror movie they make nowadays. While I thoroughly enjoyed DS:E, I viewed it more as a Sci-Fi title than a "survival horror" title. There was nothing scary about it.

Yea I played some of the first hunter the reckoning and some of the sequel. Also, I'm definatly looking forward to the Grinder. I've played some of those 2 Left 4 Dead games and I thought this was supposed to be similar in some respect (Multiplayer online?)

Edit:@Thomas Joseph: EH...There are games that have Creepy stuff in them. I really like those. Like that wierd breathing thing in Resident Evil 4.
I don't know if it necessarilly has to be scary with the ghost, monsters, etc... But I do love that type of subject matter.
One of may favorite games was Eternal Darkness. Part of the fun on that game was that insanity meter. Weird things would happen. Like when the game said to be continued. That was a good joke.

@longtimegamer IGN and Amazon both have it listed as $39.99. Anyone looking for a hands on preview Ryan Clements has one up at IGN. http://wii.ign.com/articles/104/1042865p1.html . The amazon description says there is no blood or gore in the game so that might attribute to why it only got a Teen rating on it. Oddly enough Amazon has the game as being released by Konami which is a typo of course. http://www.amazon.com/Calling-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B0030GBTYC/ref=...

I actually love horror stuff. =) Weird, I know, given my preferences on certain things, but I do enjoy the genre. The last horror game I played was Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. I would consider that more of a mature game. There is heavy symbolism within the storyline, and it's fun to try and figure it out. Boy, I had the whole thing wrong right up to the end. o_O It's not mindless violence and such. Shattered Memories is actually less violent, I think, than the other Silent Hills. There are two or three parts I can think of that have something grotesque in them, but the game's not littered with these things. (Monsters, not included =P)

I have actually seen a trailer for the Calling, and it looks very freaky. I wouldn't mind gettin' it, but I don't know if I'd buy it right away. I'm definitely interested and wouldn't mind readin' any new info they come out with on it. =)

@Trevor Fox: What preferances? I've been going to church alot lately so i feel a little (conflicted?) with my liking some of these things (I like horror movies. one that I thought was real creepy was the Grudge.)
I should play that Shattered Memorys. I read about the psychological profiling. I should play the first silent hill *and finish it) just to clearly compare the two.

Here I am to save the day!!

I'm a big fan of the RE and SH series (I'll be picking up Shattered Memories when I get some cash or when it goes down) and really dig the genre. Part of it might be that I also like horror films (as divided as their quality usually is.)

As for the questions asked: what I look for in regards to whether the game was worth the cash is if I was satisifed by the end on what I got (especially if the title has no/little replay or in the other corner, if I feel it had tons.) Mature games don't need mature subject matter, they need to appeal to a mature audience, which you can judge either in age or by, y'know, actual maturity. (Notice that there IS in fact a difference between the two.)

I wasn't impressed by what I've seen of The Calling as of now, so I doubt I'll get it (immediantly) but I wish the best to it.

Well, I enjoy stuff that's for kids. I love Pixar's movies and stuff because they're able to strike a balance b/w adults and children without throwing in any innappropriate content, such as language and stuff. For games, I don't enjoy all of the blood, guts, and stuff that some developers throw in. I do wish that some games were rated T, 'cause I'd like to play them. =) Blood doesn't bother me in some games, but I get physically ill whenever I see it in others. I almost have to throw up.

Another thing that bothers my is foul language. Some games don't have too much, while others do. I loved the filter system that's in the Gears of War game. It makes a game such as that playable to an expanded audience, or, in other words, I got to play it. Boo-yeah! =P But, language really took me out of other games, such as Uncharted 2. Brilliant game, I just wish there'd been a filter. But, ah well.

I'd say Church would also be another factor as for me not wanting to play some rated M games, and I do enjoy other games that aren't rated M that are mature in their own regard.

Anyway, these are the main preferences I was talking about. But despite those things, I do love being scared and I enjoy horror movies and games and such. =) Go figure. =P

I don't like horror games, and the most M-rated games are from this genre, so I'm not missing very much.
However, there were a lot of games I couldn't play because they were rated for 16 and up.
But now I'm 16, so I can play more games.
But there are a lot of games I still can't play because of my brother.

The Internet is a glimpse of how rude people will be in the future.

I certainly don't care for the "survival" horror games that just end up being shooters with a creepy fascia like Resident Evil, but this new crop of Wii titles is certainly interesting. I wouldn't say I'm so interested I'd throw down top money (£29.99 -- which I guess is in your US$40-50 range) to get them on first release, though.

I have paid up to £34.99 for a game -- it just depends on how much it interests me.

The first horror game I played was Resident Evil 4, but that was more action then anything. I picked up the RE Archives: RE1 in hopes of finding similar pleasure, but it wasn't scary enough and was just plain too hard. (Limited saves? WTF?) I do kinda want to take a look at Cursed Mountain, though.

I'm pretty sure I think I'm funnier than I really am.
