I think a SMB2 themed game would be awesome. Different playable characters, pulling items, etc.
i agree! i stand by my hopes for an eventual New Super Mario Bros. 2/New Super Mario Panic, where they would take SMB2(US) and wrangle it into a title worthy of the franchise.

New Super Mario World or any "New" Mario game would be cool. If we're stuck with just another 3D sequel, a Galaxy 2 might actually be good. Then rather than focusing on a new gimmick (and I don't mean this derogatorily), they could just focus on some crazier level design and maybe actually make it challenging. Still, I wonder if Nintendo would be satisfied with this. They don't tend to do direct sequels anymore, it seems.

Having reached the scale of Galaxy is it pehaps more likely that Nintendo would release a direct sequel rather than making say, Super Mario Universe or whatever?

I'd love a Galaxy 2. And I wouldn't consider it cheap or lazy or anything, as I think the "gimmick" has a lot more mileage left in it. Galaxy was loads of fun and very innovative, yet I still feel like they could do lots more with it. (Compared to, say, FLUDD, which wore out its welcome in about an hour.)
You're right about the "direct sequels"-phobia that Nintendo seems to have, but there are exceptions. The Prime series, for example. Ocarina of Time / Majora's Mask being another. Or Wind Waker / Phantom Hourglass / Spirit Tracks. But I confess that those are the exceptions, and not the rule.
Fingers crossed, though. The gravity gimmick could lead to another huge, awesome game without any question, so let's hope they don't scrap it just for the heck of it.

Perhaps. It's hard to anticipate what they'll do now since there is no clear way to go to surpass the scope of a galactic game. They could go with a more dreamlike and fantastical world so that it isn't directly comparable with outer space. That would be nice. The concept of running around small planetoids was fun, but Mario in Space was too serious and felt out of place. The game play was fun, but the atmosphere too heavy.
Or they could just introduce a new gimmick like FLUDD or spherical movement (not sure how better to describe that), in which case the game could be set in space or anywhere, as the focus wouldn't be on the environment but on the new way to play.

Don't get me wrong. I don't think it would be cheap or lazy either. In fact, I wish Nintendo would do this more often. It's an easy way to get a quick sequel out, and good level design trumps an interesting gimmick any day in my book, so with the game engine already written, that should be all they'd have to focus on. I would certainly welcome a Galaxy 2. I just don't see this as fitting in with the few exceptions of sequel-phobia. Phantom Hourglass was a direct sequel in plot, but the game engine and style is completely different. Prime was made by Retro. So the only example I can think of is MM.

Yeah, I generally prefered the levels that weren't in space. I quite see what you are saying about a fantastical world where they could still have different gameplay mechanics.

Sorry man, I phrased that poorly. I was actually trying to agree with you.
Good call on the Prime / Retro thing...I forgot about that. MM is still an example, though, and even if you disregard Wind Waker / Phantom Hourglass on the engine/platform grounds (which is fair) we know we are getting a direct sequel to PH in Spirit Tracks, so that's another exception...
Yeah. These are few and far between. But I'm certainly hoping we get some more gravity action, and I think the difficulty level should be adjusted, too.
People say that if you want a challenge, then just get all stars with both plumbers. This is true, to a point, but it seems that a lot of the stars are way too easy to get (we all know which ones those are) and a lot of the other ones are more about luck than challenge (blowing up the trash, the rail-based purple coins tasks...), leading to frustration.
I think the balance of difficulty in Galaxy was decent (I would personally have preferred more of a challenge, but it was fun enough as it was and I understand that kids need to be able to play it), they just need to realize that the harder stars deserve more creative effort than slapping a vicious time limit on the task.
I heard rumors that the next Mario game will be a new 3D game for the Nintendo DS. Oh,and we will very likely hear an announcement about Mario Party 9 soon.
I can't see Nintendo making a Galaxy 2, not saying they wont make another Mario platform game, but I doubt we will see a direct follow up to galaxy, I expect the next wii Mario game will be a sports title, maybe golf, though what I would like is a proper Mario RPG on wii, but since Super Paper Mario (not really an RPG IMO) isn't really that old and the fact they are busy on the DS version then I doubt we will see such a title on wii for a few years.
Well, of course there are the sports games, this thread is about "traditional" Mario games (not that Galaxy is traditional by any means, but you know what I mean, I think -- the "main" series).
But while we are digressed, I find it odd that we get two Mario sports games on Wii plus an NPC version of tennis after Miyamoto said earlier on that the success of Wii Sports and popularity of the Mii made him want to follow the more generic sports route rather than slapping Mario's face on every spin-off imaginable. I wonder what changed his mind, or maybe Nintendo just didn't agree with him. I'd personally prefer to see more Wii Sports games than Mario Sports games. At least we'll be getting Resort.

Well Reggie did say at E3 2008 (I think it was) that the Mario and Zelda teams were hard at work, so I hope we will see another Mario platformer on the Wii. I was thinking it'd be cool if they made something completely new, a kind of SMG spinoff. I'd like something radically different, something that is to SMG what SMW2: Yoshi's Island was to SMW.
