So you're suggesting removing strafing? Believe me, playing an FPS without strafing is horrible. If I install one of my mid-90s FPS games without remapping the controls, a lot of them have 'a' and 'd' mapped to turn left and right, respectively, with strafing being something else. You'd have to put it in somehow (maybe c+(left/right) could strafe or something).

I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

What does strafe mean? I'm not being sarcastic.

I do feel more immersed in shooter games with Wii pointer controls than an analog stick. Now, when I play Halo reach, aiming feels stiff and , at times, a chore. But that's just me.

No, that's just rational thinking.lol You'd have to be out of your mind to prefer dual analog over Wii pointer controls. who 'wouldn't' want to feel like they are engaged, as if if THEY ARE the character. It offers a highly unique and an incredibly fun and amazing semi-virtual reality interactive experience. I'm not a fan of the FPS genre, but the Wii controls have completely made me interested in First person titles again, or adventures at least.

Dual analog sticks for me offer the biggest clunky unengaging snore fest period, i can't stand those evil little archiac nubbies. Same deal with mouse and keyboard. Both are such a massive step back, and make the experience unenjoyable at least for me.

...but I like keyboard and mouse.

This was my point before. Any solution with only one analog stick isn't going to be good. You need to move in all four directions, and you need to look in all four directions. An analog stick can only do one of those things at any given time.

And there's something else I don't think has been mentioned yet. So the pointer would be for aiming at something on the screen, but not looking around. The analog stick would be for moving forward, backward, and turning to the sides, but wouldn't let you strafe. How do you look up and down?

-_-

In the context of this thread, the definition would be:

to sidestep; to move sideways without turning. A core mechanic of most first-person shooters.

"A core mechanic of most first-person shooters", that's why turning should be mapped to the pointer and not the analog stick.

I get what the author is saying. He just didn't have a clear idea on how to fix the problem. Also, he's right on the turning w/ the pointer, at least imo. I, however, know how to fix this. The player can hold down Z or C to look around.

Yep, that's it. I should have been more clear. I guess the topic name is a little misleading.
I don't have the answers. But turning with the pointer is a chore.
The controls on RE:4 were fantastic, but I guess that's because you don't really need to strafe.
I don't know how I originally envisioned it working, but the first FPS I played on the Wii (Goldeneye, I think?) I was instantly confused. Turning like that just doesn't feel intuitive (to me).
That being said, I really enjoyed the new Goldeneye, and the Wii controls on it were really fun, if not refined.
It's like Mario Kart Wii. The motion controls are the most fun way to play it, no doubt, but when I'm trying to get 3 star ratings, I use the GameCube controller.
I think it's something they should have thought about when they made the Wii controlers. After all, for some reason FPS seems like the biggest genre right now. 9/10 Hi-Def games are FPS these days.

Are there any other must-play FPS on the Wii? Now that I think of it, Goldeneye might be the only one I played all the way through,

My main platform is the PC, so I really dislike using analogue sticks for FPS games. However, I think M+KB offers far greater precision than pointer controls. Perhaps not as immersive (I really don't know, I've got a few Wii FPS games but haven't played very much of them), but far more accurate.

I'll be quite happy playing Metroid Prime etc. with pointer controls, but for anything with competitive multiplayer you'll find me on my PC.

What you get with KB + Mouse (aside of advance/retreat):
1 - Keep advancing (slow or fast)
2 - Turn around
3 - Step to the sides
4 - Roll left/right
5 - Stand up/crouch
6 - Look around
7 - Zoom in/out/optics
8 - Jump
9 - switch weapon/magazine/magazine mode

Impossible to have with Wii control and I would say almost impossible with XBoX/PS3 ones.

Metroid Prime 3 and Resident Evil 4 should be considered the two best that has done it. I see potential coming if its evolved as a mix from both schemes. Consoles vs PC's is the same old tinker, it really leads no where but! (I think nintendo took this into consider for the next wii u with the additional triggers and bumpers on the future controller so that's a bonus.)

If it takes you a remote and a japanese fighting tool to get your immersed in a game, then I'm questioning if that game is right for you.

If anything its

Mouse and Keyboard>Pointer controls>Dual Analog

Im wondering what's going to happen with Wii U. While Killer freaks uses other Contoller methods pretty sure Ghost recon online won't allow for a a Wiimote setting.

lol But that head tracking hasn't made it into modern & mainstream video games. I've even seen those giant human sized Hamster-like balls too which are used for walking and running in the virtual world. The funny thing is the guys working on these ideas are using dated and horribly generic War-themed first person shooters as their test subjects. That's the type of VR i do NOT want to enter. Why not cook up some surreal fantasty world instead? It's about entering another world/dimension, not the same world we live in!

Anyways, Most people that say mouse and keyboard offer more precision than the wii remote are the same people that have only played Metroid Prime 3(or golden eye for ex, maybe even Conduit 2) on an HDTV which ranges in all sorts of input lag. Best way to test is on a CRT SDTV and the result is flat out amazing. But ya, i just don't like the feeling of having my hand rested down on top of a mouse/flat surface. in no way does it ressemble holding a gun or using Samus's Arm canon for example. The Wii pointer controls can be a flash light, a sword, a corn dog if you wan't.lol there are tons of possibilites and it offers such an engaging experience and a much more fun experience. I don't feel like I'm the character when I'm using the mouse, but with the Wii remote i feel like my arm/hand is an extension of the characters. Just wait until we get our hands on Skyward sword....1:1 Sword play with motion plus and the many other brilliant and innovative ideas nintendo has in store for us will be prettttty amazing.

I would say that games like IL-2 Sturmovik and GTR 2 are modern and mainstream!

Also, I'm not talking about precision due to TV lag (which is basically imperceptible on modern TVs, anyway) - simply waving your arm in the air will never be able to achieve the same accuracy as a mouse. (I'd venture to say that pulling off twitch shots with pointer controls will be far harder than doing the same with a mouse).

I'm not saying it's fun - I think MP trilogy's pointer controls are fantastic, once you get used to them - but like I said before, if I'm getting competitive I'll go for my PC. Then again, I've been playing games on the PC for about 20 years, and on Wii for 2
