Topic: Final Fantasy VI: Possible prequel?

I just finished Final Fantasy IV: The After Years and I had an idea. What if Square Enix was to make a sequel to Final Fantasy VI?
I would love to see what has happened to all my favorite characters since the original. It could even be a similar format to the Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. The graphics would receive minor adjustments just so the game looks great and there could be adjustments to the gameplay as well.
Personally, I don't mind paying for additional parts because in FFIV:TAY you were paying 3600 wii points ($36) for over 50 hours of gaming. Most games today, particulary 360 and PS3 games, charge $50 - $60 for 10 to 20 hours of gaming.
What are your ideas on this idea? What would you want to be included in a sequel to Final Fantasy VI?

EDIT: I changed the name of this topic because since the world is more or less destroyed at the end of FFVI, there can't be a sequel.

Well considering the entire planet is more or less destroyed I would say a sequal is a bad idea. Now FFVI: The Before Years , that's an idea I'd be more excited to see.

I guess that might make more sense.
Either way, I'd like to see Locke again lol.

Personally, I wouldn't want Square-Enix to soil my favorite Final Fantasy in the same ways they soiled IV with the underwhelming After Years and VII with... well... everything they did based on it. I'm sure many also hold the same sentiments but I would be in favor of VI getting the Chrono Trigger and FFIII/IV DS treatment. Meaning, update/remake the game for the DS like they did with III and IV and the Dragon Quest updates so that way it stays true to the original game, so fans and newcomers can experience or re-experience it instead of just getting an uninspired "sequel". Judging by the quality and effort put into the DS remakes of FF and DQ, I would think that would be a better deal for Square-Enix and for fans as well. I'm sure Square-Enix is probably planning to remake V on the DS so VI would only be logical. Direct prequels/sequels never have been Square-Enix's strong point... especially when trying to continue on a well established world/story, insert FFX-2 and DoC joke.

@kevohki
While sequels may not be Square's strong point, they have always sold well. (FFIV:TAY topped the Wiiware charts for a couple weeks before dropping down, and it remains on the list to this day.) Also seeing as how the sequels always try to implement something new or different than the original did, it may be the reason you don't like them.

Yeah, same here. FFVI is my favorite game of all time and I'd rather see the remake route then a prequel or sequel.

I'm upset at your thread title. I opened this thinking that it was coming to WiiWare.

Please change the title so that you don't disappoint others.

Sorry, I just was excited when I saw the original title and then disappointed. It was the first RPG I ever played.

Will they? Storywise, there's not much to go on as far as sequels go. Gameplaywise, they've technically already have one with FF7. I really don't see how a sequel, or even a prequel would even be possible.

Of course, if they did, I couldn't careless about it, since I absolutely detested FF6. I just hope S-E continues to ignore its fans and really experiment with these meta-games they've been putting out lately - a lot of them actually better than the games they're based on, IMO.

I once thought about making a hack where you played as Wicks, Wedge, Leo, Celes and Kefka in Gesthrals rise to power. Then I found out the hack-editors didn´t really work that well and left the idea. A prequel sure would be better than a sequel... Still, without the original development team it wouldn´t be the same.

FFIV: The After Years was sweet. It just adds to the mythology of the game. I don't see how a follow up game bastardizes the original. A crappy remake yes, but not a seperate game.

@ Tair E. Nigma - Spoilers are null and void after 5 years at least let alone 10+.

I just started replaying Final Fantasy VI after making this topic out of temptation, and it made me want a sequel/prequel that much more. The ending of the original was a cliffhanger seeing as the world was just beginning to rebuild itself and then the game ended, not explaining many things. Come on Square Enix!

The world is more or less destroyed halfway through the game, and yet it continues, why wouldn't they be able to move on from the ending.

Of course, once the world gets more or less destroyed the game stops being fun, which is a good enough reason, not to introduce a sequel with more of the same not fun.

nintendogamerftw

@Digiki
I guess you'd be right. They could continue it several years later when the world is rebuilt, but I still don't see how they'd do that. Plus, the magicite are gone which would the game a lot less interesting than the original.

Ditto. Please don't ruin FFVI (the best game ever) with any pathetic attempts at a spin off/sequel/prequel.

How does a sequel/prequel ruin the first game?
